This just isn't going to happen; people keep making comments like this, but they don't understand Nintendo's world-wide success as a company. 3 of the 5 best-selling consoles of all time were manufactured by Nintendo, with the DS holding the #2 spot, and the Wii -- yes, that console which everyone loves to hate -- holding the #5 spot. (Microsoft doesn't even appear until we get to #9.)

If you look at the actual sales numbers: the only console manufacturer which actually struggles to be in the console race on a world-wide level (since we should not just be talking about America here) is Microsoft. The Nintendo DS all by itself has out-sold every single console Microsoft has manufactured combined, and part of NIntendo's sales model -- since the NES -- has been to profit on console sales. Most console manufacturers sell consoles at a loss in an effort to make it up in licensing fees, but not Nintendo. Nintendo has $20 BILLION in liquidity; and more than ONE TRILLION DOLLARS in assets. Nintendo has more assets (and definitely more liquidity) than GOLDMAN SACHS.

Nintendo has been the worlds largest console manufacturer (measured by revenue from console sales) for decades, and still holds that title. For Sony and/or Microsoft to dethrone Nintendo on a global level they'll basically need a miracle, or for Nintendo to literally hibernate for 10+ years.

It seems that the majority of these people assume that because Nintendo does poorly in America that it's a failing company, but America has kind of been small potatoes to Nintendo for a very long time now, and -- by sales comparison -- Microsoft's Xbox series is the smallest potato in the world-wide console market.

It's called ethnocentricity, people, and it's not a good thing; if you're going to participate in a discussion about a GLOBAL company: look at global sales numbers, and think globally.

Nintendo will probably still be making game consoles until long after we're all dead.

I really wish Nintendo made something I actually wanted to buy.

You are in charge of your desires and expectations; your lack of interest is (and can only ever be) your responsibility. Have you considered expanding the scope of things which you enjoy?

Learning to enjoy/appreciate a wide variety of things is part of what makes life great.

The Wii was a misstep in the eyes of people who like video games, even if it spoke highly to casuals and any mom who didn't want to drop more money on superior systems for Christmas. Get what I'm saying now?

Yes, I understand that you speak from a place of ignorance; it's perfectly clear. If you think being an entitled white person makes you able to speak for everyone: you're way off the mark.

Your post is highly ethnocentric; you don't seem to realize that in other parts of the world -- the parts of the world where the majority of the population of the planet live (Asia) -- that Nintendo has been the king of the video game mountain for around 3 decades. The majority of the global population doesn't even celebrate Christmas. You said Nintendo made a bad move with Wii, but companies like Sony and Microsoft would love to have the kind of success (and have the kind of liquidity) that Nintendo has continued to see. Go and have a trip to Asia and you'll be hard-pressed to find an Xbox, but you'll almost definitely see something manufactured by Nintendo in the hands of many people ... kids, adults ... and, yes, they all like video games.

You say "superior systems" like a gaming console is all technical specifications, but that's just not the case; "superior" is a relative term, so if you're going to throw it around: we need to define the terms. I would argue that a device is "superior" to another if it serves its user in a more satisfactory way, and that's all. For some things: a stick is better than a shovel, regardless of how technologically advanced a shovel might be when compared to the stick.

Sure, the Wii is collecting dust on shelves now, but so is pretty much every other console from every previous generation, so that argument just doesn't hold water; your Xbox360 will be collecting dust all the same in a few years.

Finally, if you think making a bunch of uninformed claims and swearing makes you sound like an informed adult: you're wrong; it just makes you sound like an ignorant child who has a chip on their shoulder.

Good now maybe they'll put the fucking GBA backlog on the eShop on my 3DS and stop making "consoles" to compete with MS/Sony. Nintendo really fucked up with the Wii and the U, but the good news is they have always been the best at handhelds...

You need to do your research before you bash the Wii, which is the 5th best selling game console of ALL TIME; the 4 consoles ahead of it are all from previous generations of gaming consoles, and 2 of them were also manufactured by Nintendo.

The Wii outsold PS3 and Xbox 360 by over 20 MILLION units. Nintendo almost literally mopped the floor with both Sony AND Microsoft last generation, and that's NOT including their massive, world-wide success with hand-held consoles. (Even the GameBoy Advance outsold PS3 and XB360!)

No: the Wii was not a Nintendo misstep by any means. Not a lot of entertainment companies maintain liquidity on the order of $20 BILLION.

The first Sega home console was the SG-1000, but most of my friends who had a Sega before the Genesis had the Sega Master System.

"His proflicacy and success combined to make him a ubiquitous figure and brand within the literary world."

I'm not following "proflicacy" here; either you mean "prolificity," meaning that he was prolific, or you mean "profligacy," meaning that he was wasteful and extravagant. The latter is only one letter away from the word you typed, but it's also kind of insulting.

@patrickklepek: BUY SUPER METROID!

You really missed-out; it was $0.30 the first week it was released, so it was kind of a no-brainer.

"The reason it’s a thrill to win is because you’re more likely to lose."

This is exactly why I loved both Demon's & Dark Souls; this sentiment is exactly what happens when you experience those games cold, without wikis or knowing anything else about what's happening or where to go. Demon's & Dark souls don't hold your hand, and have no qualms about throwing you into situations for which you are not prepared.

I have to agree that Demon's Souls is the harder game; that the worlds become more difficult every time you die in them (world tendency) is diabolical, and Dark Souls doesn't do that. I fear this trend of becoming easier will plague Dark Souls 2...

@tzarstefan:

Yes, it's terrible. I wish I could get a refund. Character switching is tedious, and multiplayer makes it worse, with inactive players literally left with nothing to do or look at. I even bought it for Wii U because I figured multiplayer would be great with the second screen; they didn't even use the Wii U GamePad's second screen for anything but character switching. The puzzle solutions are either obvious or non-sensical. It was a huge waste of my time to play through it once. I got to a section of the game which was for one character (The Twins), and after watching me play through that level for 15 minutes my wife just put down her controller and left.

Deathspank was pretty tedious too. Maybe he should retire instead of making shitty games; I'd like less shitty games from which to choose.
