Favorite 25 Games of All Time

These are some of my favorite games from all eras.  I'm not saying these are all perfect games or this list is even complete (im bound to forget something).  This is just a bunch of games that  I personally have had a lot of fun with over the years.  Keep in mind there are some consoles I never owned or had much experience with, so there are a lot of great games that I never got to play.

List items

  • The biggest time sink I can think of. It's still a viable game to play even a decade after it's release. That's kind of insane when you think about it. Want to know what else is crazy? I still to this day, know off the top of my head the variable stat ranges on dozens of items; Shako 98-141 def, HoZ 150-200 ed, etc. etc.

  • It's kind of sad to think that I will never be as good at anything in my life as I was at this game's multiplayer in the late 90s, but that's life for ya'. Assyrian all the way baby!

  • One of the most rewarding single player experiences I've ever had. Better than the original in every way. Great characters and dialogue, a wonderful universe, and unlike almost any other game I can think of, it really builds to a great climax where you genuinely are nervous about the outcome of the "suicide mission", and who will live and who will die. Great!

  • Favorite shooter of this generation. There is a sort of intangible quality to the multiplayer that keeps me coming back for more. Even though most games are one sided and people are gonna cry about host or the chainsaw or mexicans or whatever. It's those close games of Annex that go down to the wire or that insane head shot with the torque bow that reaffirm my faith. It's hard for me to explain, other than by saying that the GOW multi can provide genuine moments of satisfaction that I don't really get from other online shooters.

  • I'd kill Flash Man first cause he is a total cake walk, then I'd do Metal Man next to get the blade followed by Wood, Air, Crash, Bubble, Heat, and finally Quick Man. Best in the series and my favorite NES game ever.

  • Comedy is so hard to pull off in games, but this game does it. The final boss battle and end credits hilarious. Plus the physics based puzzles were a refreshing change of pace for the genre.

  • It's great in any format from the Gameboy to XBLA. But it's at it's best when you run into a random arcade cabinet the front of a Pizza Hut or something (then proceed to set the high score). Of all the early 80s video games I think this holds up the best and is still fun to play.

  • Q2 CTF with the laser hook mod on McKinley Revival was the best multiplayer I had ever played in my life up to that point. I still wouldn't mind playing it now actually.

  • Objection! This game is awesome. The first one just stands out personally cause it got me into the series and the DS in general.

  • I know the fighting was taken out for this year, but I thought more importantly this version allowed you to play the entire season schedule and not just pin you to one team. Plus you could make any trades you wanted, fair or not, and create new players so you could constantly update the league. My favorite game for the Sega hands down.

  • Very replayable, a nice break from other "strategy" games of the era, or hell even today, which are basically glorified versions of Dune 2.

  • Great game. I love the fact that it's a unique sci-fi world with some thought behind it and not another generic space shooter.

  • It's amazing how differently I look at the first game given how much the sequel improved on it. Still, it's a great start to the series and in a way it's unfair to punish it after the fact.

  • Good mix of characters from both companies, probably my favorite fighting game ever and my favorite Dreamcast game.

  • I figured it would be more of the same (not like that was a bad thing), but as so often happens in video games the sequal surpasses the original in every way. Instant fun and visually striking, for my money the best thing on XBLA.

  • My favorite Half Life mod ever. Especially circa 2002 (whichever version that was). I'd rather play this than like any of the gazillion WWII fps that came out in the following years.

  • I know Goldeneye gets all this credit for bringing FPS to the console, but that games didn't even standup to what was available on the PC at the time. Halo did, and was truly influential for the genre moving forward. Plus it felt epic and was a lot of fun co-op.

  • I can still hear the music in my head over 20 years later, classic. One of those games where beating the final boss felt like a real accomplishment.

  • One of the best shooters ever, simple as that.

  • One of my favorite arcade games ever. Seeing it for the first time ever in all it's dual screen glory at the Casa Bonita arcade at age 7 is a cherished childhood memory. That resturaunt is specatacular too.

  • The second running back for Texas A&M had this insane speed rank, and if you ran this one certain play he was almost ensured of going the distance. Stuff like that seems so broken and wrong today, but back 95, that's just how it was, and it was awesome.

  • It had every team in the league even if Sweetness was no longer part of the package.

  • I can't even count how many times me and my friend Mike raced through "Arctic Circle" our freshman year of college, but it must have been at least once a day. Also, Castle Von Dandy!!!

  • I can still remember thinking to myself this is the best graphics I've ever seen. It's probably the single reason I asked for a Sega over the SNES...a descision I later regretted. But that was no fault of Sonic.

  • Kind of ahead of it's time as an arcade game. As I recall the cabinets in the arcade (which you could friggin sit in!), could be hooked up to give you essentially a deathmatch mode. A joystick for each hand and a missle that you could guide from a first person perspective. This is the early 90s we're talking about too!
