NBA 2K10..err..what?

Thanks for reading that achievement/trophy thing. As I'm a filthy street walker when it comes to those (but don't worry: I never play a game for them, I just like having them).

So in preperation for NBA 2K11, I bought NBA 2K10 and it just showed up in the mail. Here's the deal with this series, and I think all sports games this generation: What the EFF do these games do outside of roster updates?

I don't hate the game, far from it, but seriously, I played the mess out of 2K6 and 2K7. Frankly, 2K10 feels exactly like 2K6. Nothing has changed. Graphically, it looks the same. The controls seem worst than I remember them (maybe I'm just unfamiliar of how the older one played). Actually, that's probably my biggest complaints: graphics and controls. This game doesn't look bad, it just doesn't look good. 2K6 impressed more of my friends than PGR3 when it came out. Yet, I load the game up today, looks the same. It's mainly the jagged edges in the game and the audience just looks like some PlayStation 1/N64 bullcrap. Character models? Look great! It's just their clothes don't look as good as they did almost 5 years ago. And the controls? Meh, they're not horrible, they just don't feel as responsive as some games. I guess you just have to try it.

It's a solid title, just a little worried that 2K11, the Jordan edition, is just going to be that: Jordan on 2K6. Update your freakin' graphics engine, 2K Games!!

Rant complete.

Now, off to pick up StarCraft II so I can cuss my monitor out for losing my 300th game in a row.

I love sports games so I'm not sure what you're talking about and as for NBA games, I prefer NBA Live 10 (I tried both games).

I've been an avid 2K player ever since the series debut on the Dreamcast.
I play it because EA's NBA games suck.

Sad but true. Thats my reason.

I recently upgraded from 2k7 to 2k10 myself. I think the graphical improvements aren't staggering, but most of the athlete renders look better. And by better, I mean decidedly less alien, even if that means they still don't look quite like the real life counterparts. Also, the commentary is of a higher production value. I love hearing the commentators fucking hoot at vicious dunks.

That said, I do feel the controls are a bit too sticky. I'm sure, with enough time and practice and skill, one could really unleash hell on anything less than a professional defense, but everything just feels sort of sloppy, like I'm forever caught in some really extended animation. And I'm not sure I've ever made a lay-up when there's a defender even close to the basket, and not because the defender blocks the shot or anything, but because the game just won't let you have any easy buckets. Kind of janky.

Dude. As someone who plays the series extensively, I can tell you they do a whole lot more than just roster updates. Every year, there are some pretty considerable changes to the gameplay. Not so much in the way of adding brand new gameplay mechanics every year, but more along the lines of fine-tuning and altering the way things work. 2K10 is leagues apart from 2K6 or 2K7. Those older games were way more arcade-like, and straight up ridiculous. Sure, they were fun, but much more fast-paced and NBA Jam like. Since then, the series has made noteworthy changes that have brough it closer to a more realistic style of play. And to say that graphically it looks the same is completely absurd. Here's the thing about graphics and memory. We always remember a game looking far better than is it. Then what happens when you go back and play it, or see a video or screenshots? The game looks so much worse than you remembered.

Dude, NBA 2K10 looks really great. All the time people come to my house when I'm playing and they think an actual game is on. I will say that the crossovers and such in NBA 2K10 need work. The problem being that they made them conceptually very complex, though by doing this they've eliminated random crossovers and have given you all kinds of specific moves you can perform whenever. The problem is that they're pretty hard to master, and some moves don't seem to work like they're supposed to, such as the 360 dunk which I've only pulled off once in my life.

NBA 2K10 no doubt has it's share of problems, though I think it has overall made many solid improvements. Regardless, saying it's the same game as NBA 2K6 or 7 is just flat-out retarded.

@TheGreatGuero: It looked really great in 2k6 too. I'm not saying it's not improved at all. I'm saying graphically, it's about the same. And that kinda sucks. And controls are kinda weak still.

I'm considering getting NBA2K11 despite the fact that I still have NBA 2K9 lying around. Should I wait one more year, or bite it and get 2K11?

I'm gonna have to agree that they need to build a new graphics engine from the ground up. Definitely seems like it's time. Yes, I know this is an old blog but I wanted to respond to it anyways.

Oh and Blazers are gonna own in 2K11.

2K11 is looking promising at least.

And Sactown Kings win the gold. (...in my dreams, I know...)

Maybe if they're not too busy playing real life Need For Speed!  :P
