Sid Meier's Civilization laid the foundation for hundreds of empire building turn based strategy games to come. Arguably the very first and most influential "just one more turn" game of all time.

Half Life set the standard for atmosphere in a first person shooter. In fact if you play it with the lights out the game is still a bit creepy even 10 years after its release.

Alpha Centauri too the turn based strategy genera a step further with modular units and a surprisingly dark and defined story. To some extent Alpha Centauri has yet to be trumped by any turn based strategy game.
