GOTY 2013

List items

  • This is more or less the successor to San Andreas that I was hoping GTA IV would be five years ago. The game is even set in a beautifully re-imagined San Andreas. Perhaps it’s because I’ve gotten older but I spent far less time going on killing sprees or blowing shit up and focused on the story. That’s okay though as it’s one hell of a story. While I do wish there were more of them, the heists were my favorite parts of the game. Oh and the driving isn’t shit this time around!

  • I have not played a Zelda game since Phantom Hourglass (which I did enjoy). I don’t really have much to say here except that A Link Between Worlds is just one great, fun video game.

  • Pokemon X/Y is my favorite Pokemon game since Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald. Generations IV and especially V felt like more of what I’ve already seen without any big changes, even more so than previous games. While X and Y still stick to the basic Pokemon formula, Game Freak changed things up enough to make Pokemon feel fresher for me than it has felt in years.

  • BioShock Infinite is a thrilling rollercoaster ride that I enjoyed from start to finish. Looking at the story hard enough may sour your enjoyment of the whole game but I loved going around fucking shit up in the (physically) gorgeous city of Columbia. Also, the Lutece twins are my favorite characters of this year.

  • Joel and Ellie’s emotional trek across an infected United States was one that will stick with me for some time. In what is likely the nicest-looking console game I’ve ever played, The Last of Us showed me that I was willing to enjoy one more zombie game that isn’t The Walking Dead. Also, I still can’t get over how Joel looks almost identical to my father.

  • A small selection of my interests includes video games, puzzles, and space so naturally The Swapper was relevant to my interests. The puzzles seem so elaborate at first glance but tended to only require small number of moves to solve. The physically handcrafted environment and beautiful score lend well to the game’s lonely atmosphere. What ties all of this together is a captivating and dark story in which you must make a choice at the end. Unsurprisingly, both choices result in pretty dark endings.

  • I’ve intentionally avoided strategy games my whole life. You make one wrong move and everything goes to shit. Consequently, I have never played a Fire Emblem game prior to Awakening but I’m sure this one won’t be my last. It is very accessible for newcomers but still presents a fair challenge. That challenge could be especially so whenever I would deliberately pair up two characters for the sole purpose of eventually marrying them.

  • Papers, Please is stress incarnate. That being said, I love it. I’ve never played anything like it. The stress comes from making sure each entrant’s papers are perfectly in order while abiding by the rules which are continuously revised throughout the game, all done as quickly as possible so as to process more entrants before the day’s end to ensure you are paid enough to provide for your family. The subplots such as the EZIC arc and Jorji Costava’s numerous failed attempts to enter Arstotzka were entertaining to watch.

  • I really did not care for the story in Tomb Raider but playing the game itself was a lot of fun from start to finish. The gameplay felt like Uncharted with a little bit of Far Cry 3 thrown in.

  • Antichamber is like a minimalist, more obscure Portal. I banged my head against decent amount of the puzzles when it turned out that I was usually just over thinking things. Sometimes I was even under thinking when I simply had no idea that there were more techniques I could perform.
