I thought the extremely visceral nature of the deaths actually added significantly to the tone. It was always such a shocking juxtaposition to how understated everything else in the game was. I could literally feel the blood drain from my face the first time I saw the spider impale the boy.

For me it was the very last sequence where you smash through the glass. I played the game through in one sitting so maybe I was just fatigued or something at that point, but it never clicked for me that you had to build momentum from the fall and fly through the next section until I did it by pure accident. After flying up to my death in the ceiling section a few times I figured it must just be a red herring or something and spent a solid 15 minutes trying to time my jump off the ceiling so that I could just run through the next section. Eventually I got the timing down to a science and just walked stupidly into the glass pane and stopped until I flew into the saw blade above it. I didn't even realize it was supposed to be glass until I flew through it; I just thought it was a lazily implemented invisible wall or something.

Anyway, I hadn't tried hitting it while falling because I figured I would just hurdle straight into the saw blade on the wall, but I'd already tried hitting the switch over and over again at every other possible angle so I figured I'd try it anyway in a defiant "Is this what you want to see, game!?" moment. Boy did I feel stupid when I slingshotted through that pane of glass. The slow motion almost felt like a taunt.

In all seriousness I wonder if this is a reason that some people have. I mean, for all the talk about video games increasing aggression could it not be a means of relieving it too?

@Ronald: Thank you very much for the reply. Can I ask what makes online games less fun for you?

I am doing a project on gamers for my psychology class and I have a favor to ask of you. I would like you to tell me why it is that you play games. It sounds simple, but when you really stop to think about it gaming is a very personal experience for many people and I have to imagine that the answer differs from person to person. Some of you play to escape, some of you play to be a part of a social community, and some of you play just to have fun, but you are all drawn to the same place to achieve this goal. Whatever your reason you have all chosen to make games a part of your daily lives and I want to know why. Why do you choose video games? What are you escaping from and how do games help you? Why do you find you are able to connect with video games more easily than other forms of media? Why are they so much more fun? You are all gamers and I want you to tell me who you are and why you are here. Thank you very much for any response you can give me. I have very high expectations for this project and I really want it to be an eye-opener for those who do not understand the culture that has formed around gaming and the personal connection we have with games. It has garnered a lot of interest in my class from both gamers and non-gamers alike and I hope you can help me make it something special for them. Thank you very much for your time and support.
