Game of the Year 2012

I didn't play a lot this year, but the stuff I played, I truly enjoyed. And while I disliked a good majority of games I played this year, this isn't about them at all. Rather, the games that I loved and will look back on fondly.

Games I haven't played but want to:

  1. Far Cry 3
  2. Syndicate
  3. Asura's Wrath
  4. Persona 4: Arena
  5. Dust: An Elysian Tale
  6. Mark of the Ninja

List items

  • The Walking Dead is far from perfect. VERY far. The amount of trouble people have had with their saves and the plethora of game-breaking glitches many people encountered would normally be enough to make me write of Telltale's magnum opus. That said, it is most certainly a magnum opus. There were too many times in The Walking Dead, that I found myself dumbstruck and bewildered about the choices I had to make and the outcomes of these choices. The tale of Lee and Clementine won't soon be forgotten, by me or the many others who played it. Engaging stories aren't something that I expect from most games, but there are many moments in The Walking Dead that just hit me right at home.

  • Fuck X-COM: Enemy Unknown. Going through the game feels like a masochistic romp in which the player discovers just how much they will take. It's a game that is tight and focused in what it sets out to do. There aren't many games that I will suffer shit from, but X-COM was more to me than just a game.

  • Fez is such a strange little game. It's a charming and easy going plat-former that had me tricked when I first played through it. I had no idea that the game was so deep and filled with secrets. There were many times I wanted to use guides of some sort in the beginning, and while I eventually caved,(Fucking Clock Tower), the game still managed to be completely engrossing. Plus, that soundtrack is musical perfection.

  • I'm not a huge racing fan. In fact, I've always been turned off by most racing games. After snagging Forza Horzon in a great Black Friday deal, I was given a racing game that had it all. Great driving mechanics, suffer-able AI, and one of my favorite soundtracks of the year, all came together to produce the best racing game I've played since Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit.

  • I don't think that Journey is really a game. This is the first time I've ever felt like the game vs. experience argument is actually sound and reasonable. The game is absolutely gorgeous and defies what traditional games are about. Really, it's plain stunning.

  • I didn't donate to the Kickstarter, but I feel like shit now because I didn't. While I don't think that the game is entirely approachable, I felt like the tutorial gave me all that I really needed to know to survive. FTL is crazy, and you'd be crazy to just dismiss it.

  • Yep. While the online is still one of the most infuriating experiences imaginable, the game is still top notch. I don't have many friends that are as deep into gaming as I am, but FIFA remains the one game that everybody I know will try. Now if only I could stop having to listen to people in other languages discuss school work and talk on the phone midmatch. I shit you not.

  • I'm not a huge Halo fan by any stretch of the word, but Halo means a lot to me particularly because I've been with Master Chief and Cortana since they landed on the first installation. The multi-player is awesome sure, but Zombies is the real treat.

  • I didn't have much to lose with this fun little plat-former, so I took a gamble on it recently. I'm really glad I did too, because not only is the game quirky and charming, it's tight and concise as well.

  • Trials Evolution is a great game. Perhaps its due to the fact it came out early in the year with little competition in terms of other games. I really enjoyed the game itself, but the real highlight was doing my best to stay sane and unlock the final races. I took a stab at them, but I knew that it was all in vain.
