GOTY 2013

This list may be late, but it's because I'm still busy playing these games. At least until Dark Souls II comes out.......

List items

  • While the beginning of the game is extremely clunky, the rest of the game is fantastic. Harrowing and hysterical, The Last of Us is masterful in its storytelling and was the most disarming game I've ever had the privilege to play. Nolan North as David is the scariest video game character I've ever seen.

  • Easily the funniest game I played all year. Deliberately disobeying/obeying the narrator and finding all the ways I could break the game was amazing. All of this wouldn't have mattered if the game had been unfunny, but thankfully the humor is there spades.

  • While I don't think the game reaches the heights of Saints Row: The Third, I still enjoyed the game. Just like Persona 4, the game relies on it's characters and these are some of the funniest around.

  • I still haven't managed to finish Antichamber, but some of the puzzles in here are mind-boggling. I haven't broken down and consulted Youtube yet and I don't think I will. All in all, it's a fantastic puzzle game that will make you question all conventional knowledge you might have about puzzles in games.

  • I don't have any huge nostalgia for A Link to the Past, but this is the best Zelda game I've played since Majora's Mask. It relies quite heavily on it's predecessor, but manages to carve its own path as well. The dungeons aren't too tough, but some of the puzzles will have you stumped for sure.

  • While the additions aren't as big as last year's FIFA, FIFA 14 manages to be fantastic all the same.

  • I feel like this is an unfair choice because I haven't played the last four episodes,(no one has), but I still enjoyed it all the same. It's gritty and raw to say the least, but manages to be endearing all the same. If Telltale keeps the quality of the first episode throughout the series, this might be on my list next year too.

  • I had some sound problems with the game early on, that were my TV's fault, yet I still was amazed by Tomb Raider. From the ways you upgrade Lara's abilities to the copious amount of collectibles, Tomb Raider does a lot really well. Some of the marketing and pre-game press deterred me from the game at first, but looking solely at the game's merits, Tomb Raider is incredible.

  • My biggest problems with Bioshock Infinite concern the superfluous combat encounters and the monotony of picking up spare ammo all throughout the game. That aside, I had a great time exploring the world of Columbia and all that occurs. The story beats are a bit underwhelming in spots, but the tale of Booker and Elizabeth is an entertaining ride all the same.

  • I must have beaten the Elite Four within at least two days. The basic formula for this game remains addicting as ever, but I feel the game was a bit short.
