My Top Five Nostalgia-Inducing Games

List items

  • The great campaign, the crazy gunfights, the campy live-action cutscenes, that AWESOME fuel-pipe level (level 9, still remember), the Kell dragons, the rail detonator gun, a god-damn LIGHTSABER, and so very much more. I played this thing way too damn much, both the single-player and multiplayer. One of the best games ever made for the PC.

  • Though absolutely infuriating in certain parts, this game still rests firmly in my memory as the best platformer ever made. The weird fantasy world, the great music, the varied level design, and the intense jumping kept me hooked for longer than I'd like to admit.

  • I never actually beat this one (actually just started a new game a few days ago) but I had some great fun with it when it first came out. I made all my characters stupidly (I seem to recall having a monk that I multi-classed as a druid?) but that just made it even more satisfying when I managed to survive the brutal fights that ID2 throws at you. The "create your own party" element of this game was the biggest hook for me, and I'm kind of surprised that more RPGs nowadays don't give the player the freedom to create 6 unique characters for their party.

  • Oh, Gothic. I picked up my copy of Gothic as I was leaving Comp USA (remember that store?). I saw a single, lone copy on the shelf as I walked by, I snatched it up knowing NOTHING about it, and bought it. Little did I expect to then embark on the strangest, weirdest, clunkiest adventure I'd ever see in any RPG.

I'm not going to waste time describing Gothic, because you either know all about it already, or deserve to find out the way I did. It's a one-of-a-kind experience that has its ups and downs, but it will certainly stick with you for a long time to come.

  • One of the first truly great FPSs that I can remember playing vividly. Who here can't remember the first time they played that Omaha beach scene? Sure, the enemies were cheap as hell (MP40s should NOT BE ABLE TO HIT YOU FROM 10000 feet away), the friendly AI was atrocious, and some of the levels were boring ad naseum, but the explosive action sequences made up for it.

People keep telling me that the later Gothic(s?) are the ones to get into.  I haven't gotten to Icewind Dale II because I suspect that I missed an item in the first one that will set me back when I try to beat the end levels.  Really fun to actually create a complete party for once in a long while.  We need more games like that.

I never played Dark Forces II (although I think we have it lying around somewhere), but the first one had really classy level design, really clever secrets, and pretty fun combat.  I'm not sure what adding force powers would do to that formula for me, but if that game is anything like its predecessor I see where you're coming from.

Hey, thanks for the comments!

Gothic II is really the best of the series (and avoid Gothic III at all costs). Risen, which was made by the same gang of developers, is actually pretty good and very similar to the Gothic-type gameplay you'd expect.

JK's force powers are pretty weak nowadays, but for the time when JK was released, they were awesome. You could eventually get force lightning (LIGHTNING MAN), force deadly sight (which simply melted people if you LOOKED at them and totally needs to be brought back in modern SW games), force grip (always fun), force speed, force jump, and so on. It was a little clunky to use, since you had to select one force power with the Q/E buttons, then hit F to use it, but once you became adept it wasn't too bad.

Although, I regret to inform you that the best gun ever made, from Dark Forces 1 (the concussion rifle, a.k.a. the blue volcano rape machine) was significantly nerfed in JK. It's still pretty badass, but not AS badass.

That's what I've heard from most Gothic aficionados.  I'm pretty sure I'd like that game, and it's out on GOG.com I think, but I have so much stuff I've been neglecting...

I seem to remember my favorite being the repeater.  Tiny blue dots shot really fast?  Was that the concussion rifle or was that something else? That and the welding gun, maybe.

The repeater was awesome, and so was the welding gun, but the concussion rifle was best simply because you didn't even have to AIM it. You just pointed it at people (they just had to be in your FOV) and pulled the trigger. Then, under any target in view, a huge blue volcano shot out of the ground, launched them in the air, and killed them. It was unfair, hilarious, and badass. Unfortunately, I can't find a screencap of the gun going off, but here's at least what the gun looked like.

@emkeighcameron: That sounds like the kind of gun I would have held off from using.  I tended to be really stingy with my weapons use back then in Doom-like games, just because I guess I was traumatized by the Cyberdemon in the original Doom, and I always wanted to be well-prepared :)
