I have heard someone who is super into his work talk about the reason all of his videos/reviews are so long. I don't remember all of it, but It had something to do with the way his brain works through and catalogues thoughts. He may have an eidetic memory with some obsessive compulsive tendencies, and his meanderings are personally important for his process. Now its understandable that many people may not want to follow all of those meanderings/anecdotes, but his breadth of experience makes a lot of those pretty interesting.

I think he leaves it all in there as the style has also become a part of his identity as a creator. I can easily see it as very polarizing, but at the end of the day, it is pretty unique. He talks about what is interesting to him, and the people who really like his stuff tend to go all in. It is all part of the charm, or a major annoyance, depending on the viewer, but I'm glad he has stuck to his guns and does what he likes. Clearly there is an audience for it.

I you want a more nuanced and critical discussion of TLOUS2, Waypoint Radio (Podcast that Patrick Klepek and Austin Walker are a part of) does a spoilercast. They dig really deep into why it succeeds and/or fails, and their explanations are very clearly their own critical views. The podcast is pretty long (2 parts I think) and is very largely negative, but shallow their opinions are not.

I don't personally agree with all of their criticisms, as I personally enjoyed the game, but they are certainly fair to their experiences/views. Giant Bomb has never been much for "following the trend", even if their spoilercast wasn't as cohesive as it could have been. I think more preparation ahead of time would have helped organize their thoughts to properly explain their problems, as opposed to mostly spitballing as they tried to remember how they felt playing it.

A lot of people would say Nier: Automata has a 10-20 hours at the "beginning" that starts off interesting, but then becomes kind of a drag after the first few hours. After "beating" the game, it asks you replay most of what you just got done playing, but then it follows up with almost constant great story moments for the next 10 hours. "Beating" the game a second time to get to the really good stuff was a huge, often insurmountable, barrier to a lot of people.

Also, the random chests were an insane choice. Some chests can only be found on certain extremely hard hunts, and they have a RANDOM chance to drop one of a few different items, where one or two of them are extremely good. Maybe this is supposed to call back to the nature of some boss fights having random drop tables, but I have certain expectations for chests in video games. You open the chest you get the item. The randomness is so frustrating, besides the fact that the ability to cast some extremely key spells are hidden inside of some well hidden ones.

I spent hours farming certain chests (obviously my choice), but I guess this is just another example that the game does not respect your time.

The weapon differences were something I feel like was never fully explained. Maybe it is buried in the codex, but I had to check online to find out why one weapon was different from another. Hammers/axes, for instance, have a slower attack speed and have a larger variance in the amount of damage they do. Katanas and Ninja Swords attack much faster, and are much more prone to combo attacks (where the character attacks multiple times in a row), which will also make the chance to crit higher. Also, each of the weapon's damage scales with different stats, and since character's stat's all have different growth rates, some characters are by default better with certain weapons/classes.

I also just found out (after I beat the game of course) that in the Switch and Xbox One editions of the Zodiac Age, you can actually change the job of a character by talking to Monte Blanc.

This game has a huge tutorial/explanation of systems problem. Even by the end of the game, I never fully got my head around the whole Quickening system. I never knew when or when not to chain them and why chaining one was better than chaining another.

..Yes? i assume you paid for this game so why not see it through and get your money's worth

It was a dollar on game pass, so I have actually already gotten my money's worth.

@humanity@strathy

Thanks! This is exactly what I wanted to know. Now that I've had some time away from "the incident", I am feeling better about rushing straight to a couple of the big things I discovered just to have them on the logs. I look forward to getting back in, as this is such a cool game!

I had never backed out of the game to start a new loop. I had always died in one way or another, on purpose or not. Well I was about 4-5 hours in after almost fully completing the Ember Twin, Attlerock, Hearth, and a good chunk of the Ash Twin, when I needed to quit out of the game to start a new loop.

I didn't realize that an "Expedition" was your whole saved game, not just the current loop, so I chose "Start New Expedition" and confirmed my selection.

I really don't want to go through all of that again (especially Ember Twin), just to fill in all of the stuff I had found already, since most of the game is about discovery, and this would be all of the annoyance of the sand rising and none of the discovery.

Is it easy enough / worth it to start a new game and just go to all of the other planets, and maybe go back to the Twins later? Or are the discoveries there important enough that I have to go through all of that again? Or should I just give up. I love the game and don't want to stop, but I really don't want to do Ember Twin all over again.

I have seen the stupidest story pivots in this franchise at the very least, right?

I know I am WAY late (I am replaying FFIX on switch and following along with the blog), but this is got to be one of the greatest comments I have ever seen. I almost spit coffee all over my computer without even clicking the video. Poor, poor ZombiePie.
