I agree Dan. I loved the original XCOM, poured hundreds of hours into, completed it many times, all the way up to classic ironman. I love this game too. As you said it expands and improves the game for the better. One of the best things for me so far is that the game doesn't experience a dramatic drop in difficulty as you progress.
But, one thing it does experience as you have said is some technical issues. Although, they haven't forced me to want to quit; I don't think mine have been quite as severe as yours.

So far I've experienced:
- Bugged camera, having to quit to the main menu to fix it.

- Very choppy in some cutscenes.

- Camera moves to strange parts of the map - I don't mean when a civilian dies or when they're attacking an object, it's bugs out when you kill dudes close to you.

- Grenades and explosions taking forever to blow up, or blowing up before the grenade has even been fired.

- 5 second pauses between the isometric view moving to the cutscene view.

I still love the game, and these are annoying more than anything. I'm running a 970GTX with 8GB RAM with an i7. AA is turned off, as is many of the other more taxing graphics options. I don't expect to run this game maxed, but I don't think some of these bugs are down to PC specs - of course I am speculating I don't know for sure.

For anyone who enjoyed XCOM EI/EW a lot, I'd say get it, when it works (which for me is 90% of the time) it's an amazing game. If you're worried about some of these technical issues you're hearing about, just wait for the patch.

I know I'm in in the minority, but I quite like the janky nature of the physics and AI in Bethesda's more recent games. Obviously, when it's game breaking and stops you from finishing a quest, that isn't acceptable. However, when it's AI pushing you out of conversations or corpses stuck in doors I find it quite funny and it doesn't effect my experience in a negative way.

I don't want to come across as an apologist for them, the game deserves 4 stars (I've only played the PC version), but I find the janky nature quite endearing for Bethesda's RPGs.
