Why I am a Console gamer

Inspired by risingphoenix.

I know there's a lot of PC gamers here. It's part of the reason why I've chosen to write this blog. I want to shit all over you, your values, your ideals, your dreams and hopes, and even your WASD-tattoo-covered hands. Also I'm bored.

So it here it goes.

A is for Apple

Ease of use.

This is the main reason I will never call myself a PC gamer (even though I play a decent amount of Starcraft 2). You buy a 360 or a PS3, you plug it in, then put in the game and you're good to go. No messing with drivers, no scouring through forums trying to figure out why you see red scanlines on all the wall textures, no worrying whether the game will run on your ATI card because it was optimized for Nvidia hardware. It just works. Granted there are always outliers (as with all things in life), but more often than not I just don't want to deal with that headache.

Plus I'm lazy.

B is for Batman

Controls.

Gamepads are better. They just are. While it's true that you can get much more precise movements out of a mouse, the thing that kills that combo are the WASD keys. What was once a makeshift solution at best has somehow become the definitive way to control PC games and frankly that blows my mind. I just can't comprehend it. Why on Earth would anyone use them when given the choice?

I don't believe I need to list the benefits of proper gaming controllers that were designed with the sole purpose of playing games, so I won't. Instead lets talk about why KBM is bad.

  • Analog Stick for camera control = Good
  • Analog Stick for movement = Excellent
  • Mouse for camera control = Excellent
  • WASD keys for movement = Bad

Lets do some maths: Good+Excellent > Bad+Excellent

Anyone with a a few working brain cells would ask "Why not just use a controller with a PC then?" The answer is twofold. One is, of course, multiplayer. The second is a bit trickier. If we can thank Games for Windows for one thing, its standardizing the controller layout in PC games. However not all games are created equal and as such you're never entirely sure of how the gamepad will work (especially in menus). I guess this also ties to the less fussing around point I made earlier.

So, to review, gamepads > KBM when it comes to games.

C is for Cunt

Game selection.

Console manufacturers want you to buy their stuff. It's why they spend millions of dollars developing and securing exclusives. It's also why those exclusives are generally much better than anything on the PC front (again, outliers). Now, PC gaming is known for it's indie and mod scene. I, however, don't care much for indie games or mods. Most are usually one-trick ponies that have a single "innovative" idea or artstyle and it usually gets old fast, especially when you start seeing all the shortcomings of the other aspects. At best they're novel for a couple of minutes, but more often than not, they fall short of even that.

What I'm basically saying is that I'd rather play a game that was made by 200 people over the course of 2-3 years than one made by a single dude in his garage that took him 5 years of blood, sweat and tears. Sure he has heart but at the end of the day I'm playing because I want to be entertained, not feel sorry for some dude I've never met.

People love to give the "The hardware may be more but the games are cheaper. OMG Steam sales!" argument. I respectively disagree. Yes, you can get games for $2.50 during Steam sales but they're usually the aforementioned crappy indie kind. If you want the AAA stuff, it's usually going to cost you the same as on consoles. Not to mention that Amazon has it's fair share of sales (and $20 credits) and then there's whole used-game business if you swing that way.

So there you go, some of the reasons why I like consoles better. I didn't go much into the performance side of things because it's something that doesn't really matter to me (especially when it comes to framerate and screen tearing).

You don't have to agree with me, hell it's more interesting if you don't, but keep it civil people! If not for me, then do it for the children. Those poor, defenseless children. All they ever wanted was to live and love... and live... and love... but mainly live...

Well I was discussing that yesterday, and I feel the same way. Console gaming for me all the way. I hate having to mend and bend my OS and game instalation to get it to work! Console gaming is generaly much more reliable and comfy to use.

Well, I disagree with your views, sir!

I guess we will have to fight in a gladiatorial arena to the death.

(Also, mouse+keyboard is better for any first person game and many third person games in my experience. A gamepad does have its uses, however.)

Unless you're running Linux, you're doing something very, very wrong.

If by chance it happens you are running Linux, then lol.

Also, I didn't bother reading the OP and just skimmed it, so my post is going to be all over the palce.

During the summer sale I bought every Valve game ever and every Tom Clancy game ever - as well as a few of the afformentioned "crappy indie games" like Monday Night Combat, Super Meat Boy and Frozen Synapse - for a little over the price of two new 360 games.

Lol at analog sticks being "good" for camera control.

Sure, consoles "just work". Except for when they don't and you have to ship them back. Which, as I take it, happens just about as often as it doesn't.

@Enigma777:

I think the Gamepad Vs M+KB is more of a subjective thing. Because for me how any one plays a FPS with a controller baffles me. I do like it for over the 3rd person I think is is far better there.

But for the the real deal breaker with your argument is that the hole exclusives it truth I don't think there is one exclusive to 360 or PS3 that I could find my self interested in.

But its all about taste I am happy your happy not being a PC gamer and I am happy being a PC gamer. But in the end who gives a flying FUCK?

I am a PC gamer, but mainly because I cannot find the games I am looking for on the consoles. I love sitting down and relaxing my back to a good console game instead of sitting straight with a keyboard and mouse. I only own Lost Odyssey for the 360 and I doubt I'll be finishing that any time soon.

Well I have a new crappy laptop, and I'm trying to run older games, 2006-ish and I'm finding very troublesome compared to my console experience. You can say I'm wrong, my experience says I'm right.

And the laptop costed more than two PS3s. :p

though everytime a steam sale happen and games are like 2 dollar i can't help but feel iim missing out.

I agree, the only reason why I'm so against full time PC gaming is the controls and the shitload of money it costs.
And then when you spend all that money on a super rig, the bloody thing will probably still go mental on you because you don't have a driver or something else.

Console games satisfy my gaming need.
Often, PC games just make me hungry for a good game.
(Exceptions are there ofcourse, I'm very much a fan of MMO's and stuff like Mount and Blade Warband, but the latter makes me wish there was a polished console version with working online etc.

A) This is only a problem for stupid people or people that don't wish to use their mind. Myself and vast majority of other PC gamers don't run into problems that we can't solve within minutes.

B) You can use gamespads (or pretty much any other input method available out there) on the PC. Consoles are largely restricted to gamepads.

C) There are really only a handful of decent platform exclusives out there that PC doesn't get. The rest are multiplat and PC get's them in their best form.

D) PC's cost more because they're a higher end good, like a Ferrari is to a family sedan (yeah, THAT analogy again). Also, nearly all AAA new releases sell for $10 cheaper on release. If you go looking in other places you can get them even cheaper. Check out intkeys.com for example, they sell keys for nearly half price.

Summary: you are wrong sir. Now go shower you filthy console swine.

@Enigma777: Er.... What? Steam sales don't usually have indie games, during any big sale the deals on the front page will include mainly games from big publishers or companies. Buying PC games digitally is much cheaper than buying them on consoles. For example, I bought both Deus Ex Human Revolution and Dead Island for $30 each. That is really all I will comment on because those comments in particular aren't exactly correct.

I wish a game would let you play keyboard n' mouse vs gamepad so this debate could finally be settled about which is the superior control method.

You can say that with full confidence, but when the tweaks require me to modify system conffigurations, or install dubious software I kind of shiver.

"Why do I have to risk my OS to play a game?"

It can be simple, play to our sense of security after a while, you can deny it, but it is a gamble. And one I don't have to play with consoles. ^^

@RsistncE: A is also a problem for lazy people, the category I fall into. 10 minutes wasted on tampering with the FOV or sysconfig file is 10 minutes you'll never get back.

Also I will boldly argue that a large amount of the best games this generation have been console exclusives. Don't make me start a list war!

well u can connect ur gampad to a PC and get all the awesome graphic's that only the PC can offer.

So, to review, PC+gamepads > console's

also i like my KBM and the WASD keys arnt bad for movement , i also own a 360 and i prefer the PC for most games

I don't accept this either. You can't change FOV on consoles, PC gives you the option if you'd like too.

As for best games, I completely disagree, but that one is obviously subjective. Only console game I give two shits about for the past 2 years is Gears of War 3.

I am a console gamer since when I was a kid my parents could not afford a pc. I remember my dad got me a nes from a yard sale for cheap and every since I played console gaming to this day. Not that I hate on pc gaming but never got to experience those gems like nuke dukem, or doom, but at the same time I don't regret it.

Steam sales have tons of AAA games on them. I got borderlands game of the year edition, nattlefield bad company 2, audio surf, and both left 4 deads for under 25 dollars. Also games launch at 50 dollars on pc normally and look better.

I believe you're wrong on pretty much every count except cost. Game compatibility is rarely an issue with a decent up-to-date system; it's barely been a problem for me, except for some extremely old titles, and I play a LOT of PC games. Almost without exception, I find games play better with a mouse + keyboard than a controller - aiming with a stick is hideous compared to a mouse. I'll enjoy 60 frames per second, higher resolution textures, better anti-aliasing, and a plethora of other options that even modern consoles won't do as well compared to a decent gaming PC. Oh, and multitasking + multiple displays is awesome.

But since they're just opinions anyway, there's no point arguing. It won't achieve anything, and I'm sure your views are totally legitimate from your perspective - PCs have probably just been working out better for me than they have for you.

While I'm a console gamer, PS3 being my console of choice, I know PC gaming is better as long as you have the cash to fork out for a good rig. I hope to one day become a PC gamer and take part in those wonderful Steam sales I have heard legends about.

I disagree with you on the controls front, I find WASD easier to use than analogues in most cases, and let's face it, the mouse is not just on par with an analogue, it's far superior. However, I will say that I don't play driving games on PC and I generally prefer TPS on the console. Having said that, neither of these genres particularly interest me. What you've also neglected is the flexibility of the control scheme, the keyboard allowing for hotkeying and macros in ways gamepads could only dream.

In regards to price, I see that as an issue for the PC as a product, not as a console.

You games selection argument also seems fallacious, you have discounted indie games and mods, both of which are a growing industry and arguably doing more for innovating and expanding the games industry that any big title games. While the consoles have a few exclusives, this dwindles in comparison to the many PC exclusives from small developers, or the mods for bigger games which in cases like Fallout or Oblivion (and soon Skyrim) essentially create whole new expansion.

In regards to ease of use, while I think the point is a little over-exaggerated, there are issues granted. However these problems are being mitigated by things like Steam which streamline the whole process. Another thing to consider is that as consoles become more like computers (and they are), they will soon suffer similar problems.

I wouldn't call myself a fanboy. If someone said they only played racing games or third person games, or didn't have much time for gaming, I would definitely suggest getting a console. If they were more interested in FPSs or RTSs or other such games, or even were simply more interested in playing with their games, I would suggest getting a PC.

PC's are better for gaming than consoles, despite consoles ease of access and more general 'gamey'-ness, PCs have a better gaming community (mods and multiplayer), they are both more powerful (both graphics and physics) and more flexible, they have the advantage of a wider variety of games and are directly related to expanding the gaming industry.

Games tend to be at least, from what I've seen of new releases, $10 cheaper on PC than consoles (sometimes more). That does add up over time. If I take my 360 collection, that's $1000 (100 games x $10 = $1000) which equals about 16 new games, a pretty decent computer or cash towards upgrading a current computer. Still, value over time will kill the PC titles due to software compatibility issues, unless steam could fix such things in the future. While console games generally always run on their respective consoles, no matter how many years have passed as long as the console is alive.

But if finances were the reason one picked hobbies, gaming wouldn't be the one to pick. But on the control scheme thing, I think consoles will always be superior in the fact that they are built for games from the start. And I've come to prefer gamepad control in FPS because it just feels more right. Mouse and keyboard are tools for a variety of jobs, gaming being merely a small portion. Thus, it will never quite be made for games. Though some games do function a lot better with them due to the nature of a mouse and keyboard setup. But that's also because that's what we're used to. If we were used to play games with our feet, it would seem strange to use a fight stick with you hands.

Also, I am not that interested in a computer to waste time building one. Which is why I went so far in the other direction as I could and got myself an iMac instead. Plays Starcraft 2 and that's all I really need as far as PC gaming goes. I use the computer for a lot more other stuff mainly, gaming is just a side thing. Console is where most of my gaming happens, because it has most of the games I enjoy, simple as that.. really.

Uh, I'm not even rich and I have a good gaming PC and 3 different consoles.. If you are a gamer then don't distinguish between platforms, just play good games on whichever platform is available.

Is there some Giantbomb forum/blog ToS that states there has to be a fucking thread about PC vs Console and WASD/Mouse vs Joypad every week? Jesus Tap-Dancing Christ, can you people please stop fucking posting this every GOD DAMN week? There are pros and cons to both, and while I'm partial to my PC, I still like playing my consoles, and I can see there are benefits to a relatively standard platform, as there are benefits to a beefy, customizable PC.

Also, if you think you need some technical genius to run a PC game or build a PC you are an idiot. If you think that you need to spend thousands of dollars on a good PC you are also an idiot.

@Pezen: While it's true that PC games are generally $10 cheaper that trend is becoming less common now that PC devs know they can charge more for their games (look at Blizzard and EA). Furthermore I can't really stress the amazon credit (Best Buy giftcard, etc) that publishers have adopted in the past 2 or so years.

For example lets look at LOTR: War in the North, an upcoming game on all 3 platforms. The PC version is currently $49.99 while the console versions are $56.49 (360) and $59.99 (PS3). however both the 360 and the PS3 versions come with a $20 Amazon credit, essentially knocking down the price to $40.

You seem to be out of the loop. PC games for the longest time have been generally cheaper than their console counter parts by default. Steam sales also apply to all games, not just indie games. The exact same Amazon argument applies to PC games so that's a moot point. There's also been a growing trend of DD services trying to out price each other for what are ultimately all Steamworks games. Dead Island had been available for about $38 on launch and Space Marine was around $40 and came with a copy of Darksiders.

I on the other hand like to enjoy everything. I have all the consoles, handhelds, and a capable laptop that allows me to enjoy some of the PC exclusives. Within the next year I will have a better rig to run games like Witcher 2 and BF 3. I don't feel the need to choose a side. I'm on everyone's side. Fuck picking sides, that's for chumps.

I should make my own blog. Why I Choose To Own Everything.

I still got dead island for 34 dollars though. Also, not all games get 20 dollar credits, so... I mean I just bought darksiders for 5 dollars on steam, and it's still 18 dollars at gamestop.

I just think the whole concept of spending up to a thousand bucks or more on something that could potentially not run a game I buy to be pretty wild when compared to the fraction of the cost consoles are that will run anything made for it. Especially because the only thing PC games seem to have over console games are better graphics. And when you see things like Killzone or Resistance, or even Uncharted, it's such a high standard now that better graphics doesn't really matter.

Put it in and go. All the way.

A) This is only a problem for stupid people or people that don't wish to use their mind. Myself and vast majority of other PC gamers don't run into problems that we can't solve within minutes.

...I've never had to modify OS files to play a game....

You're doing it wrong.

But more and more are starting to get it every year. I haven't paid full price for a game in over a year now thanks to this and I usually get at least one (closer to 2) new games per month.

My point is that the price difference between software is a lot smaller than most people think.

i dont hav amazon/steam etc where i live, so if i wanted to play BF3 on a console it would cost me Rs. 3,000+ PS3/360 for which i would get less players and crappy graphics, i pre-ordered BF3 for the PC for Rs.1,499 .

i got BFBC2 for Rs.499 which is arnd $11 retail , 360version if i could find is was arnd Rs. 2,000

does that add up over time ?

As much as I love gamepads (to the point where I don't mind playing FPSs on the PC with a gamepad), they are simply too limited in functionality in certain types of games. Strategy games are the typical example of this but even RPGs (i.e. hotkey mapping) and FPSs (i.e. the reason why we don't see leaning in many console shooters is probably partly due to gamepad limitations) can benefit greatly from increased input options that the M+K has over the gamepad. Take a game like Red Orchestra 2. A game like that simply could not be played on a console with gamepad. There is just too much going on and the controls as well as the gameplay would have to be severely dumbed down in order for it to work on consoles. Even a game like Fallout 3, which is designed with consoles in mind, benefits from the increased flexibility of M+K controls. I feel that as games get more complex gameplay wise, the limits of a 12-button gamepad will become more and more apparent and even consoles will be forced to transition to a more flexible input method.
