Amateur Encyclopedia Bombastica: Condemned

My quest through the 360 launch line up continues today with a look at one of my favorites, Condemned. Amateur Bombastica, like the 360 at launch, is proud to announce that we're now in HD!

Condemned was a hidden gem at launch and arguably didn't get the attention is deserved. I loved the insanely violent combat. While the game only had one real mechanic which was the combat, it was strong enough to carry the player to the end.

Other Amateur Bombasticas:

Call of Duty 2

Quake 4

That makes three former interns that have covered Condemned. Step it up @babylonian and @glentennis.

I'd struggle to say I'm an ex-intern considering I was in the office for about 2 weeks out of the 3 1/2 months I committed to being there. Other job called me back despite a pre-arranged vacation.

Really enjoyed this one! Looking forward to more videos in future. :) This game has some nice little details. I really like how the med kits are actual first aid kits that open.

First first person game to have satisfying melee combat, for me, was Chronicles of Riddick.

@epicsteve: Really? I thought that was (going to be) your second summer there. I'm confusing my interns, clearly. You still count as a former intern though, for whatever that laurel is worth.

As for Condemned it seemed like a repetitive series of dark rooms and hobo jump scares from the Fear Gauntlet playthrough. The sequel (which I did play) mixed up the environments and set-pieces a bit more but made a lot of daft mistakes regarding the plot and how the game eventually concluded - the most unfortunate casualties of C2's end-game being the series's trademark spooky tension and visceral melee combat (why use 2x4s when you have Banshee's superpowers?). I'm sad Monolith won't be making a third because it seems like it wouldn't be too difficult to find a perfect balance between the two games.

The second game was awesome. It had that great bear sequence. But the second half got too super natural and too gun friendly for my taste. Remember that boss fight were you just shout at him? Weird. but C2 did a lot of refinement. Despite the criticisms against Condemned, it's still incredibly impressive that it's a launch game with interesting new(ish)mechanics, it's a goddamn horror game, and a new IP.

But I think Monolith in general had issues with repetitive environments because that was one of F.E.A.R.'s biggest criticism.

Condemned is the only game that has made me quit out of fear. It was in the department store (naturally) and ironically was on my second (third?) play through of the game. Just couldn't do it.

That's THE BEST part!
