Something Irreplaceable

9 hours and 56 minutes later and I completed Metroid: Other M with a 58% collection rate. All things considered, I enjoyed my time spent on the game and am eager to get that 100%. It was only a week ago that I heard a lot of complaints and grievances lodged at the game and was considering canceling my preorder. I see now that those statements proved to be exaggerations made by people who cared about aspects of the game in ways and lengths I do not. I enjoyed playing Metroid Fusion and see Other M as a follow up to Fusion and Zero Mission. The emphasis on story excited me and I was eager to see how the story unfolds. It is rare to see Nintendo make a game with production values that is on par with other big action titles. Perhaps that is something Nintendo should not do, but I enjoy seeing them make an effort. Seeing how Metroid: Other M turned out, I would like for them to try such an effort again and improve from preceding titles.

"Sorry for keeping you waiting, Adam. Lets go home."

EDIT: 12 hours, 46 minutes and 38 seconds and 100% item completion has been achieved in Other M. Hurrah!

EDIT 2: The Theater Mode that consists of all the games cutscenes with some prerecorded game footage to tie the cinematics together is 2 hour and 10 minute long feature. There a lot of valid complaints and criticisms lodged at the game's writing that I acknowledge but don't share. Watching the story of Other M again, I think the writing is adequate and mediocre; a level of quality that I'm fine with and on par with other video games.

The Baby, The Baby, The Baby.

I finally managed to connect my Wii to the internet on Monday and splurged $30 on to the Wii Shop channel to get River City Ransom (NES), Sin & Punishment (N64), and Tetris Party (WiiWare). So far, I'm happy with all of them. The controls in Sin & Punishment take some getting used to. I hope to get Sin & Punishment: Star Successor as the pointer control will be much better for shooting.

The big thing for me was the arrival of my copy of Metroid: Other M on Tuesday. Having enjoyed all of Fusion, I was curious to what Yoshio Sakamoto does for a follow up. Thus far it is a lot of familiar ground except now with a lot of pre-rendered cinematics and voice acting. Despite some vocal outcry, I'm really digging the presentation. The controls are a technical feat to get the most mileage out of a single Wii Remote. It doesn't quite make for the best controlling game, but it's still good fun. I'm only 3 hours in and I'm eager to see what's next.

Subspace communique

Ah, Super Smash Bros. Brawl big single-player adventure, The Subspace Emissary. It took me 6 hours and 25 minutes recently to slog through the mode to quickly unlock all the characters in the game. The game's mechanics are not suited to any sort of precision platforming which makes the numerous times you need to leap for you life in Subspace Emissary such a chore. It's so much of a chore that I just set the difficulty to easy so unlocking all the characters would be as painless as possible. It didn't help that the environments are so bland and lack the personality and parody of the adventure mode in Super Smash Bros. Melee.

I'm glad that I'm through with Subspace Emissary because now I can mess around with Classic Mode and the Events Mode.
