The Fabulous PSP Games List!

We've got a DS list, a PS3 list and quite possibly, a 360 list. Since there isn't a PSP list I've decided to throw one together. As far as I know we don't have a Wii list that's up to date so I might make a new one later. Although I do own a Wii myself, I'm not terribly versed in great Wii titles so if anyone else is willing to make one, please tell me!

With the recent release of the PSP Go!, which eliminates the UMD and therefore you can only purchase the game on PSN, I'm going to split games into a two different categories, PSP games and PSN games. Games that are availiable on both retail and download are placed into the "PSP" section whereas games that are only availiable on the PSN Store are placed into "PSN". I'm going with this format for the time being but if anyone has a better idea, just holler.

Like any other list, this is a community run list so comments, additions and suggestions are welcome.

Update: Added some more games and included an import and upcoming section. Will reformat list later.

Very few of those games are what I would call "fabulous"

May I also suggest Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow?

No, you may not, DM was 10,000x better, IMHO.

Solid selection there, definitely. I've been needing to pick up Badman, but I think I might just jump on the sequel instead.

Also, I don't want to get into a huge debate or anything, but I never liked the LocoRoco series. It's cute, but it's not really fun to play. It could be a neat-o Wiiware/iPhone game for $10 or something (hell, iPhone has Rolando, which is basically the same thing) but as a full-fledged PSP release, it's extremely lacking.

Patapon on the other hand is friggin fantastic. One of the best rhythm games I've ever played, and easily one of the most stylish games ever. That music & the art style are amazing as well.

Lastly...Crisis Core is awesome, but I haven't finished it. And lastly lastly, get Dissidia. You won't regret it.

Wut.

LCS was way more interesting than VCS. And Patapon 2 is arguably the best damn game on the system - it even won GB's PSP GOTY.

Also, you've not played half of the games!

Bunch of recommendations:

Lumines  - this addictive puzzle game is absolutely essential. Sold the PSP to many people.
DJ Max Portable - rhythm games from South Korea with a strong cult following. Fantastic series.
Shin Megami Tensei: Persona  - a good RPG, but closer to a port than a remake. It's not to everyone's liking due to its age.
LittleBigPlanet - not played this personally, but many are saying it's as close to the PS3 game as can be.
Tekken: Dark Resurrection - the best, most content laden fighting game on PSP. Runs at a beautiful 60fps.
Ridge Racer 2 - didn't see a US release unfortunately. Includes all of RR1's content plus tons of extras.
Star Ocean: First Departure & Star Ocean: Second Evolution  - enhanced remakes of the classic PS1 RPGs. Maybe not essential but still good.
Monster Hunter Freedom Unite - this has over 100 hours of gameplay and, no joke: reduced Japan's productivity the day it was released.
Wipeout Pure & Wipeout Pulse  - and finally no PSP list is complete without Wipeout. Everyone loves these games.

VCS was better in so many ways, LCS was a piece of shit, honestly, and Patapon is too simplistic and not stylish enough.

Tekken 5 = Awesome
Ridge Racer 2 = IDK
SO: FD + SO: SD = Fuck no, absolutely never.
Monster Hunter Freedom Unite = Average.
Wipeout series = Awesome and great prices in the US.

What do you mean by not stylish enough? It's a rhythm / tactical / sidescroller / micromanagement game with great art and catchy music. I don't see how it lacks style in any way.

Great list eroticfishcake.  I agree with 100% of your choices.  LCS is a proper GTA game whereas VCS is more of a hey we increased the mapsize release.

It is none of those things, it is a button masher dressed up like a sidescroller, it is also very poor and no fun to play, and if you consider black stick-men or average looking boss characters like dinosaurs to be artistic, well, you're wrong,  plain and simple, also the music was pretty much ear rape.

If you mashed buttons you would get nowhere. You need proper timing and memory of all the commands to literally move forward in the game. And then you also need to use tactics, to be able to pick the right command to do things like retreat, attack and defend at the right time. The graphics are basically silhouette art - I don't see anything wrong with that. In fact, Apple even thought silhouette art was cool enough to put in iPod commercials. I'm sorry but I just don't agree with you at all. Most people fucking love Patapon. Maybe you just have a bad case of humbug and dislike games which may appeal to children. And PATA-PATA-PATA-PON - consider your canals defiled.

From a technical standpoint it was easier to play, yes, and it had a much larger map but it was not a better game.  You haven't played half of the list you shat on and you're asking ME??  What planet are you on dude?
Edited by AgentJ

I don't own many of those but this seems pretty comprehensive.
You really should create a tier system to make it clear which games are necessary and which games are more for collectors. For example, you don't get enough out of the FInal Fantasy 1 and 2 remakes for them to really be must-buys.
Be sure to add Fate Unlimited Codes (PSN) and Tales of Versus (import)

Posted by ZenaxPure

All the arguing about I like x game more than y game aside shouldn't this just be a list of games that people should know about? This isn't a "my top psp game list" or anything, it appears to just be a list of games people might like. All the random arguing is crazy...

Moving on I suggest Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology. Has the standard Tales combat but much different gameplay with a focus on quests and such. Also as someone mentioned above the first 2 Star Ocean remakes should also be on this sort of list.

@Emandudeguyperson:
Sure, that's your opinion on those games, if you don't like them or aren't willing to even try some of them that's your choice, no problem with that. However, you're being a dick about it, and that's a problem.

Dissidia is pretty decent. Tekken 6 is more of Tekken, if you liked Dark Res, that should be there too.

@Emandudeguyperson: You may not like those games for whatever reasons and I can respect that but this is list of good PSP games in those genres as opposed to games EVERY PSP owner must get (I used "fabulous" in the context of a hyperbole). As I've said before, this is a community run list decided by the community. Not me, you or any other individual. From looking a various gaming sites, these games have fallen under the category of "Great" and since both these sites and the community agree that these games are good, they qualify to be on this list. Again, these games are considered good in their genres, if someone glances at this list and runs off to buy the game and turns out that they hate it, then it's their fault for not doing a bit more research in it. This list is a mere suggestion, not the greatest games that have recieved a 10/10.

You don't like Patapon. Fair enough I can accept that. But I like it, Slippy likes it, VinceNotVance likes it. Hell, even the GB crew liked it so much that they considered it as the PSP Game of 2009. They are the majority of the people and that is who the list is aimed towards to. Hence why this is a community list. The same applies to the majority of the games. It's just a basic list for now but I will reformat it to make it easier to define which games are considered the "best". I just thought I clear that up a bit. Thank you for you input.

@Red: Yes of course you can since the game has generally recieved good scores. Thanks for telling me.

@VinceNotVance: I can see what you mean but it's not like you find anything else out there which is just as unique as Loco Roco really. Again this list is just of noticably good PSP games. I'll throw up a simple description later since I do share your sentiments towards the game. Playing the first one was fun but the sequel didn't add a whole lot. That aside, I'll think about it some more and thanks for the input.

@Slippy: Odd. Thought I added the Wipeout titles already since I own them. O_o Thanks for reminding me anyway. I know and played those games before apart from DJ Max and Tekken. I've heard good things about them though so I will add them to the list. I'm not so sure about Persona though since from I know a lot of people thought it was average. It's not a bad game but I could've been a better port I think. I will consider this however and see what other people say first before I add it to the list. Thanks for the additions anyway. I may have sucked hard in Monster Hunter but even then I know there's a lot of depth in there. I hate the camera though...

@Linkyshinks: Thanks. I almost forgot about that game and it looks interesting too.

@SeriouslyNow: I'm just going to say that both LCS and VCS were both great titles in their own way, therefore I think it's OK to place both of them in the list. Personally I enjoyed VCS more due the theme but LCS is still great in it's own right. If you've anything else to add please do so! Thanks for commenting.

@AgentJ: I'm slighty wary of a tier-system since it's exposed to bias to some degree. I know what you mean though so I probaby make one once I've cleared a few things up. As I've said before, this is just a suggestion of good PSP games rather then must buys (there isn't a whole lot of must buys for the PSP is there?). I'll think about it some more and change it then. Thanks either way, I'll add them to the list. Don't forget to add a link on your DS list too (if that's alright with you of course). Also I haven't heard from PureRok recently...

What this gentleman said. This is NOT a list of "My top PSP games", this is a list of PSP games that people may like. Anyway, thanks for the input. I've just added the Star Ocean titles since I believe (along with a good number of people) that it is a good game and therefore qualifies to be on the list. I'm not totally sure of Radiant Mythology though since I've never heard of it before. I will consider it though, so I'll look around and see what the everyone thinks of the game before I throw it in there. Cheers for the input!

@Shirogane: I'm not totally sure about Dissidia to be honest since I thought it was alright. The production quality was good though and a lot people seemed to have enjoyed it (maybe because they were FF fans). So I'm placing it on the list for the time being. Bear with me as it's a new list. Thanks for the input. I'll think about it some more.

@Abyssfull: Added. Now I just need a release date. Thanks!

How about Phantasy Star Portable?  Not a perfect game by any means, but a fun multiplayer loot grinder.
Second one improves on a lot of the issues too, but doesn't have a Western release date yet.

lack of Metal Gear Acid brings a tear to me eye :'[

Posted by eroticfishcake
@WinterSnowblind: Not entirely sure if a mulitplayer loot grinder would qualify as a good game since "grinding" has a lot of negative connontations to it. I haven't played the game myself let alone know a lot about it so it's hard to form any opinion on it. I'll think about it anyway and see what the majority of the people say before I add in the list. Thanks for the suggestion though. I'll look into the second title as well.
Edited by MikeFightNight
@eroticfishcake: You forgot Street Fighter Alpha 3 and Darkstalkers Chaos Tower, both visually amazing and great playing fighting games.  However If you have no interest in fighting games at all I can see why you would leave these two off, but for anyone who does like them, these two game are a must if you own a PSP.
Edited by Driadon
@eroticfishcake: There's a demo on PSN for it. It's actually quite fun if you enjoy Diablo-style action RPG's.
The inclusion of Monster Hunter in this list makes me happy in the pants.
Posted by eroticfishcake
@luce: Oh shit I forgot about those! :S Added now! Ahaha...

@MikeFightNight: This is a list of recommended PSP games for new owners as opposed to my top PSP games. Since I don't play fighters much I didn't think to add those two as I've never heard of them. General reception for Darkstalkers is good though so I will add it to the list. I'll throw in Alpha 3 as well since that's not too bad. Thanks for the suggestions. Beat em' ups don't really cross my mind much I'm afraid.

@Driadon: Is there now? Great. I'll give a whirl later and see what's it like. Regardless of what I think though I'm still going to see what the majority say. This is a community list afterall.

@Jimi: Surprisingly, yes I do. Not so much now though since I've played nearly everything now and to be honest, I've played my DS more then I do with my PSP. Still, there's some great games coming out for the PSP next year and with the recent release of the PSP Go!, someone may end up buying one and therefore they need to know what good games there are available.

Wait I minute. I thought this was your list of games you own.

What's the point of listing every PSP game?
Posted by AgentJ
@eroticfishcake: I'm sure Purerok will be fine. I'm more worried that Meowayne does his new Wii list. Hopefully he will find the time. Anyway, good work so far
Edited by eroticfishcake
@EVO: Nope. It's actually a list of good PSP games for anyone who has purchased a PSP and are looking for some good games to get. I know it's a pretty big list (rather surprisingly if you ask me) but according to me and other fellow users, we think that these games are good enough and unqiue to consider a purchase. It's only a basic list for now so I'm going to reformat it later at some point. If you've got anything else to say then you're more then welcome.

@AgentJ: Cheers. I thought oldschool would've written the list but then again he's a grown man so he probably doesn't have as much times as us young timers. Regardless of who writes the list, it's still a community work anyway and we've got a lot of Nintedo fans that can give out some good pointers. If anyone's too busy to work on the lists then I don't mind taking over since I am an Arts student afterall. >_>

Couple more suggestions since it is a new day, mostly from the RPG side since that is just kind of my thing on the PSP.

Brave Story New Traveler. I don't own it myself but it used to be talked about on other places around the net and it has some really positive reviews.  Comes off as a game that anyone into handheld RPGs could get into, and if anything it looks really nice.

Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep and Final Fantasy XIII Agito. Both of those should be on the "up coming" for namesake alone. Both are from widely known series and even in a worst case scenario will probably be better than similar titles on the console.

As for more thoughts on some stuff, I think Dissidia should stay most likely, it is a ton of fan service and well, most fans I know were pretty happy with it. I haven't got the chance to buy it yet personally. I know a version of Persona 3 is out/coming for the PSP, that should be on there since the game is already established to be quite good on the PS2 and the port is just adding more content. As for Persona 1 I think that goes back to the silly argument people were having before. It is made by Atlus who are well known for their RPGs and in particular the Persona series (especially around here) so a very updated remake of the original is something that should at least be worth "checking out" on this sort of list.
