Just FYI apparently huge spoilers about the ending are going around various forums, BSN, youtube channels, etc. You know some prick is going to try and ruin everybody's good time. Practice safe surfing fellow duders if you don't want to be spoiled. :)

ME3 will be the better experience for you I think. SWTOR is fine but comes with a lot of MMO baggage that dilutes the "Bioware" experience.

Basically you need to reach some level of galactic readiness to get the best ending. There are enough things in single player to get the level you need or you can supplement it with co-op or the iphone apps. If you don't want to touch either of those things you will still be fine.
