Name a game franchise that was ruined by there own developers..

Basically name a video game series that had potential, but the developers manage to screw it up. Express your opinion and don't be afraid, if you don't want to express then just name the game.

I'll start off and say the developers fucked up the Silent Hill series. It started off great with the four SH games, but after the original Team Silent developers disbanded, and gave the ip to different developers. The series has been in limbo ever sense. The newer SH entries isn't bad (except Shattered Memories) but its not on the same level as the older SH games. It lacks the tension, creepy atmosphere, narrative, and creative design.

As current gen technology is now, you would think the devs would bring the best aspects out of the SH series, but it just never happened. For some reason the SH series never reach the peak that it once had, and maybe will never see it again. So far there's been a streak of lackluster SH games.

Silent Hill :Downpour the latest in the series sealed the deal. It had good intentions with a more open-world SH game, but the clunky combat, stupid unrewarding side missions, crappy inventory system, uninspired design, buggy and weird graphical glitches, and a story that was just meh didn't do the game justice. After this game I lost complete faith with the developers.

I came to the conclusion that the series will be half-ass, unless other devs or Hideo Kojima decides to takeover. Sense he's shown interest of working on the series. It would be nice if Kojima put some of his magic on Silent Hill, and restore it back to the great survival-horror it once was...

I would nominate Crackdown, but there were only two of those. Rare to see such a fun game with such a poorly designed followup, though.

I'm a huge RE fan too, but 5 and 6 ruined the series for me.

@aetheldod: I don't mean to start any poopoo, but could you explain why you prefer the older RE games over RE4 and the games that came afterwards? I'm genuinely interested in your response.

If you ask me, they fucked up with FF VIII. Ever since then, the games have either been hit (IX, X), miss (X-2, XII, XIV) with some odd ones in the gray area (XIII, XIII-2).

Planet Laika. Yea, it's not part of any known franchise, but:

A.) It's essentially Illusion of Gaia with space dogs.

B.) Quintet followed this game up by dissolving into nothing.

They've all been talked to death, so I'm sure you can guess why I feel the way I do for each series.

Square Enix - For taking Final Fantasy and trying to make it to appeal to a mythological "Western Gamer" that doesn't actually exist.

Lionhead - For taking Fable and streamlining any sense of character and originality out of the series.

BioWare - For taking Mass Effect 3 and Dragon Age II and essentially phoning them in.

Capcom - For taking Megaman and, I dunno, does ruining something by NOT developing it count?

Depends on the situation, but in capcom's case and fans backlash then yeah.

Oh man you took Silent Hill. SH 1 and 2 were a huge thing for my friends and I, we would discuss them at length. Such a shame.

For me it's the Stronghold series, I felt like the idea was great, but the games just never evolved to their full potential.

Oh yeah, Fable.

My god. I didn't think a game could be so simplified and casual that it actually gets more complicated. Fable 3, it had some good ideas. Being King and making choices with actual impact on the world was great. Everything else about the game was utter and complete garbage. But i played it for free so whatever.

Final Fantasy.

Dragon Age (and quickly! Just 2 games from impressive to shite.)

Assassin's Creed I would call a publisher's blunder, not developers.

Mega Man?

Oh, whoops. SONIC. Can't believe I forgot the largest downhill slide.

For me it was after Pro Skater 4, and even somewhat in 4 that I felt the series was starting to go downhill. After 4 they started adding all kinds of dumb (and not in a good way) objectives and things to do and it started moving farther and farther away from skateboarding.

Then Dead Space it is! A great horror franchise turned into a later Resident Evil in space.

In my opinion Silent Hill: Downpour is great.

What constitutes "ruining" a franchise? Loved and then hated? Financially successful and then nothing? Developers not able to capitalize or realize what made their old games great? Adding in personal interpretation into the mix and I feel like we could take any franchise people like and twist it in such a way to make it look bad.

Man I'm tired of threads that are essentially time to people being negative and shitty about video games. I'm sure OP didn't intend it but glancing at this site's forums from the start, there are just ways they're worded that invite people to post how much a game is just bad. No nuance, no personal hedging, just blat one two this game sucks bye. Intentionally or unintentionally inviting negativity on the internet is something I'm really sick of at this point.

@falserelic: saddest thing is, I still hope with every new SH game that it'll go back to what made it good. Those tight corridors in the dark. The bleak unsettling feeling of hopelessness that seemed to suggest that the character would be better off surrendering to the horrors than pushing forward. The long stretches without any enemies that kept you peering at every open room, waiting for the next creature to lurch out. I stopped buying them after Homecoming when I managed to guess the ending less than a quarter through the game.

A game that I played that manage to feel like an SH game, is a game called cry of fear.

This game is what I wanted from the recent SH games. It pretty much does what you listed in your post, and the best part its free. I recommend checking the game out, you'll be surprised. Here's my thoughts on this old blog of mine about the game. http://www.giantbomb.com/profile/falserelic/blog/can-t-believe-this-game-actually-manage-to-scare-t/101671/

@flappy: To be honest I like the survival horror as survival horror .... to think how you use your ammo and healing items as they are finite , also liked the "fixed" camera views or the slighty moving camera of Resident Evil Code Veronica (my fav RE to be honest) also I loved the puzzles ... I just like that style of gameplay. I also like the Silent Hill games too , and the difference between those two franchises. But the more "action" gameplay of RE4 is not fitting for the franchise and setting.

Patrick and Vinny did a quick look of that game and it's hilarious, you should check that out.

I'm going to be unoriginal and say Sonic, but they have made some pretty good games recently like Generations and Colors. Also Dragon Age, after what they did with ll I don't think I care enough to ever go back, EA ruined Bioware and I have no interest in giving them money anymore.

The oil crisis would vanish in an instant if we could figure out a way to channel the burning hatred I feel for Dragon Age II into some sort of energy source.

I'm thinking hatred-powered cars, where instead of a petrol gauge, you have a little boxart of DAII, and it just flashes when you're low.

Anyway, for me, I feel like the devs really ruined Puzzle Quest. In the first game, there was this crazy variety of different styles of game modes (battles being the main one, but there was different match 3 gameplay for capturing monsters, training them, crafting items, learning spells, etc.). You could conquer cities. Every battle was either a unique sidequest, or part of the main story quest, so you got at least a bit of dialogue with each fight. All the gear had interesting (if unbalanced) unique perks.

I skipped Puzzle Quest: Galactrix, because I heard every time you have to warp through a warp gate, you had to do a match, and that sounds like its tedious and slows down travel.

But oh boy, Puzzle Quest 2 sucked, and was apparently by the same developers. The art is HORRENDOUSLY BAD. The story has devolved into quite literally Diablo 1 + snowy village. You barely talk to anyone, you're just always working your way down this one haunted dungeony hole in the ground thing. There are basically no characters worth remembering in the game. It's just fight after boring fight, with all the crafting and monster training gone. Instead of being about fun little sidequests, it's just you fighting the same 3 enemy types over and over until you've cleared a floor. And all the gear is just like "+ defense points" or "+ damage", instead of unique abilities. They improved the actual match-3 gameplay part slightly, because PQ1 had experience and gold on the board that you basically NEVER wanted to match, because you always needed mana or skulls instead, so PQ2 replaced those with something better. That is the only nice thing I have to say about the game.

PQ2 is possibly the most soulless game I have ever played. It's a subpar rip off of Diablo 1, and without little bits of interesting character/quest dialogue, or at least a variety of different kinds of match-3 encounters, the battles become monotonous almost immediately.

I agree with you 100 percent. The devs messed up the reboot so badly. It basically doesn't even have its own identity, and feels like a downgraded battlefield game..

SOCOM and Silent Hill.

Silent Hill, in particular, was ruined for me by Team Silent themselves when they released the abysmal Silent Hill 3. There are very few games that I seriously hate with a passion, and that was one of them. Ugh.

This is a thread I pray to never see Metal Gear Solid on. I really hope they don't milk too much more out of that franchise. Not that there isn't contrivance already in the series, but the more they try to squeeze into the timeline, the more I worry it's going to feel too contrived. I hope after Kojima departs at the end of the MGS V (I'll believe it when I see it), it's left alone for a while.

I'd say that was killed by the publisher rather than the developer. They wanted to do more ambitious things, but they weren't given the time or the resources.

I'd say it was killed because a lot of people got tired of skateboarding games. SKATE survived because they totally revamped skateboarding as we knew it, and that too got boring over time. These things can't last forever. I love, love, looooove Demon's Souls and Dark Souls, but if they don't drastically change the formula (without sacrificing what makes 'Souls special) I'm going to be done with the series by the time I finish Dark Souls 2.

The assumption is that in a lot of cases, publishers can exert some pressure on the devs by saying "[Feature X] is so hot right now, your game must have it or we're pulling the funding on this project and your whole studio is boned". Not that publishers always play hardball to that extreme, but I've heard stories.

I mean, a lot of developers are probably content to make singleplayer games and that was really their only original vision, but I'm pretty sure publisher meddling/contract requirements are the only reason that games like Dead Space 2, Spec Ops: The Line, BioShock 2, etc., have competitive multiplayer modes.
