Why I hate E3

I use to always let myself get caught up in the hype of E3.  I would constantly speculate about what would be announced on various message boards, and it was fun.  But something has happened during the console generation. More than in years past fanboys of particular systems have become increasingly vocal.  Its to the point where you cannot open a thread about a specific game without having someone either gloating, or bringing the game down for absurd reasons.

The big three are not helping this at all, they like it and they try to fuel it.  Sony and Microsoft constantly take little digs at each other during presentations.  Now I do realize they are trying to promote their products, but you can do that in a more mature way.

Something has changed in recent years.  Being a fan of video games meant you loved the games, weather it was on Nintendo or Sega it really did not matter.  Now there seems to be so many people who favor only one console and spit on everything else.

@Stephen_Von_Cloud: You have not seen them around?  There are not a lot of them, but they are around.

I didn't want this to turn into a I hate Fanboys post, but I guess its heading there.

For real, all Jeff needs to do is say something about it on the bombcast. A lot of people will stop then. I hope that doesn't sound too mean or anything lol, but it's true. It's a fact that a lot of people just love imitating the bombcast crew. Like that one "community podcast" that was on here. I only listened to part of one episode, but the host was completely a Jeff wannabe. The whole podcast he was just like "GOD! DUDE! They should TOTALLY do that! UGH!"

I love Jeff. I do. But don't take his style lol.

Agreed. Basically, these playground arguments have made their way into a public forum (no pun intended...most likely...) and have really been fueled by the general rule of internet anonymity makes peoples dicks. Personally, I can't understand why someone finds such joy in trumpeting their chosen console/developers/whatever as being the most superior. It is a mindset beyond me.

Besides, we all know that BioWare is the best anyway, so its all just a waste of time.

While we're on the topic of annoying people, you know who else I hate? The people who post "first" in all these new headlines. I really think that Jeff needs to speak out against this on the bombcast sometime. Why? Because a lot of those people are also probably the Jeff wannabes who type "dude" and "totally" in every one of their posts. So therefore if Jeff says something they do isn't cool, they won't do it anymore.

I like E3.

But I can't wait till all these kids stop making topics about who's press conference owned who. If anyone over the age of 15 is making these threads, they really need to grow up.

But I still like E3.

I think you're having a very rosy-colored memory of the previous generations; Sega's entire marketing scheme was around how they did what Nintendon't, and Nintendo was quick to respond by equally obnoxious advertising. I can't imagine the flame wars that would go on in the early-90s if the internet was as mass market as it is today.

I will agree that fanboyism is one of the biggest problems in the current gaming climate. I just disagree it is a new problem.

Look at whats going on with the Xbox 360's "Project Natal" versus the Playstation 3's motion sensing technology. Each side of fanboys is trying to prove which technology is better and I am sick of it already.

There has always been, and there always will be fanboyism in video games. It's a sad reality of the hobby. Nonetheless, I absolutely agree with the OP in that the boards have become stagnated by boring E3 threads, most of which are started by blatant fanboys touting the products of companies that have no personal interest in them as if they were said company's own PR executive.

Fuck E3.

@Luke:  I agree.  I was lucky when I was younger, I had a rich aunt who would buy me the newest console every generation.  It made it so I only had to spend my own money to buy a second console.  If you are 15-16 years old the prices really are not that bad, if you take into account birthday money and that kind of stuff.

One of the big problems is that some kids are lazy asses these days, and instead of going-out and making the skrilla to buy all the consoles and games they need, they'd rather come to internet forums and down-talk consoles that they secretly wish they had.

When I was a kid, I worked my ass off to get my consoles and games... mowing people's lawns, painting people's fences, stacking cords of wood for people, pruning people's trees, etc.

I remember working a whole summer just so i could get the SNES on launch day, and this right after I saved up forever to buy Phantasy Star 3 on my Genesis, which cost $100!  I was even crazy enough to later go on to spend my hard eared cash on a TurboGrafx-16.

I hate hearing people say, "I can't afford this or that".  If they were real gamers, they'd get off their ass and make it happen.  Not wait on their parents... I never did.

I have pretty much bought ever single console ever made, except for maybe the NeoGeo, because I am a gamer not a whiner (or fanboy)... or maybe just because I'm unhealthily in love with games? :p

Anyway, people need to stop wasting their energies on the wrong things (like being fanboys) and instead got out and make positive shit happen.

I agree Consolism (Extreme loyalty to one's console) will be in the dictionary soon enough, but to be honest this is the first E3 i have really been excited for in a long time, not sure why, i don't think the rivalries will become too serious, Nintendo sorta found its own niche and in time Xbox and PS3 will too. I am more worried about the players themselves.

I'm starting to feel that everyone is involved with fueling these pathetic wars. It feels more like a marketing technique that is actually working and pitting gamers against each other. What happened to just enjoying a game for it being a kick ass game, without it concerning on what console its on? Also, I think that some of our beloved critics are just sometimes voicing too much, but that can be argued. I just wish I had news, previews, and reviews that try hard not compare every game to every other game, which is hard.

That's a little bit on how I think about this current gaming generation.

Very much agreed.  I might come across as a dick on this forum, not sure, but it's because some people just deserve to get told off.   I think message boards have kind of always been this way though.  Maybe it's a little worse now but I've always kind of felt this way.

I mean I'm here mostly because I'm bored (since my jaw is broke and my jaw is wired shut) and every once and a while there's some good discourse.  Otherwise it can be very frustrating.

I think you're right about the increase in fanboys being heavily due to the increase in brand loyalty (which is due to the economic downturn). As such, I think it will get better when the economy begins to turn around (eventually).
