So this year i've started hosting LAN parties with my fellow PC gamers in my local Area and have had a blast.
I've found LAN parties to be a mixture of frustration with technical issues and pure joy at crazy multiplayer escapades( army of ROFLcoptas in Warcraft 3) .
I've Found that Games with little technical barriers to entry like Warcraft 3 and The Original Halo work really well despite, no because of their age.
I've found that altough we planned to play Team Fortress 2 we found we had more fun playing Gang Garrison 2 because we could get more people playing due to its non-existant system requirements.
In my First LAN party we played a ton of LAN multiplayer of the original Halo on PC and we spent vast swathes of time playing a custom gametype of mine ~ DRAW!!! ~ which involves no shields and instantkill pistols on battlecreek with instant spawns, its absolute chaos and this makes it perfect for LAN party.
As well as playing the main Multiplayer part of Warcraft 3 we also played a good round of DOTA which reminded me that DOTA didn't spawn all these clones because it was a cool idea, it spawned all those clones because its great fun.
We also tried to get Quake 3, Red Alert 3, Battlefield Heroes, Heroes of Newerth and DDO to be played at LAN party these games didnt work for a variety of reasons-
- Quake 3 is pretty old and had some incompatability issues with Vista and Windows 7
- Red Alert 3 had issues patching and thus we were unable to get enough people into the game
- Battlefield Heroes and Heroes of Newerth Failed at LAN party for the same reason, they both run over the internet and have no Local Play options available this led to very irritating connection issues.
- DDO was good but playing it at LAN party reminded me that it works better if its a evening thing with our clan, that we all go on DDO and run some dungeons.
After these 2 LAN parties i have worked out more for my inevitable next LAN party-
- 6 people is perfect, for the games we play anyway
- People need decent computers to bring
- We have an FPS And an RTS we need a coop rpg
- NO MMO''s they really work against the LAN party
- No games that run over the net(eg. Battlefield Heroes)
- Need a solid movie, if not then no movie at all
- A game "Launch" LAN party would work well(Diablo 3 anyone)
We also watched a movie during the second LAN party, the film in question was Metal Gear Solid: Philantropy which was fantastic and very well received by all.
Anyway off i go to plan for my next LAN party which will likely happen next holidays.
P.S. ive Preordered Borderlands and Look forward to exploring it with my Clan.
