Thoughts on Shadow Complex

Right off the bat, I must say I'm really digging Shadow Complex.  The side-scrolling shooter genre hasn't had a decent entry in quite awhile and I think it is due for a rebirth.  It's only fitting that this game comes from Epic, whose Gears of War franchise always seemed to me like Blackthorne in 3D.  I've only played for about 2 hours so far, but here's what I think.

First off the graphics are pretty fantastic, with lots of detail and great lighting.  The only knock against it is when the camera goes in close to characters for cut-scenes, but this is hardly worth slagging on.  I thought that the whole game would take place in this secret base, but there seems to be a good amount of variety of indoor and outdoor locations.

The controls work well though at the very start I thought the aiming was too touchy.  However, as I started to level up my aiming and accuracy stats it became much easier to pull off headshots.  There are a bunch of fun methods to take guys down including a devastating melee attack that sends ragdolls flying about.  The guns and grenades are also quite satisfying.

The exploration element of Shadow Complex is also pretty satisfying.  Your map shows you there's stuff in a given room and you're tasked to find out how to get at it.  This relieves you of endless backtracking and missed opportunities. I experienced a few clever puzzles required to get the power-ups (HINT: it's not always about using your flashlight to find the secret).

There are a few complaints.  The story isn't very engaging so far, it's comprehensible to be sure, just not that great.  It kind of makes me wonder why they bothered using Orson Scott Card's name, when there really isn't anything, so far, that I haven't seen a hundred times before.  I kind of wished the games pacing was a little slower, everything moves really quickly, so strategy often becomes secondary to just blasting the hell out of everyone.  It all just seems a little hyperactive and makes me feel like I am rushing through it.

Thus far, a great game and more than worth the price.  Can't wait to keep playing.

Suddenly Wolfenstein! [Updated]

Apparently there's a new Wolfenstein coming out tomorrow and it does not bode well that there isn't a legit review to be found anywhere yet.   I'm sure the reviews are under embargo until it's out, but that usually doesn't happen unless the game is a steaming pile.

I vaguely remember Return to Castle Wolfenstein as a decent-but-unmemorable shooter.  From the lack of attention this new Wolfenstein is getting I guess it's the same case.

[Update] Reviews seem to be coming in now and they seem,,,pretty positive actually.  Giant Bomb actually gave it 4 out of 5 stars, so it's probably not the worst-thing-ever-put-in-a-box.  The review, while mostly positive, doesn't really say anything that inspires me to buy it.  I'm just glad they didn't do a complete disservice to the franchise.

I Don't Like Trine (Gasp!)

I guess I am alone in this, but I really don't like this game.  Granted, I've only played the first 3 levels, but I just find it frustrating and irritating.  I do really like the games style and graphics (though the 2D art is crap), but there's a lack of finesse to the controls (again, because of the physics model)  that leads to a lot of cheap deaths.   The thief's grappling hook is probably the worst offender; it shoots through things, disconnects while I am swinging over spike pits and aiming it is awkward (on keyboard and mouse anyway).   Maybe it gets better when I level up more and learn new abilities, but as of right now I am not compelled to play any further.

First Thoughts On 'Splosion Man

I've just managed to complete world 1 with more difficulty than I first thought.  I have come to the conclusion that 'Splosion Man is in fact N+ with a lot more personality and some added depth.

At first I was worried that this game would be a cakewalk, but once I got to level 1-5 and actually started dying, I realized that this game was going to get hardcore real quick.  What's really great about 'Splosion Man, is that it  has hard-but-fair gameplay.  Sure, I ended up playing the same bit of a level over and over, so often that the game told me I could skip the level if I wanted to (I did not), but I never felt like the game was being unfair - a bastard for sure - but not unfair.

The pacing of the game seems really good too, with each level that I've played so far, introducing new enemies and obstacles.  I cannot say enough, if you liked N+ or the original flash game, you will not be disappointed here.

Transformers 2 = Soul Murder

While I had been forewarned by awful reviews of Transformers 2, thereby having no one to blame but myself for attending, nothing could have prepared me for the absolute horror that I witnessed.  This movie wasn't just "bad", bad I could deal with.  This movie was the zenith of stupid; an accidental satire of all of the worst that America has to offer.

There wasn't a moment without a Chevy or Mountain Dew logo slapping you across the face, begging for you to associate cool robots with a flagging, failing automotive industry.  The robots themselves, still a mess of incomprehensible, unreadable noise, had nothing to say or any real character; they just blew shit up.   Despite it's 145 minute runtime there is no character development, no reason to care for or about anything on the screen.

The plot seems like it was written by a hundred people, each in charge of one page, only being allowed to see the last line of the previous page.  There are leaps in logic in this movie that a lobotomized chicken wouldn't make (Teleportation? Really?).  Said chicken would realize that hot-robot-chick-planted-to-kill-guy-well-in-advance-of-knowledge-they-couldn't-have-possibly-had makes no sense.  This is TRANSFORMERS, not fucking TERMINATOR!   I may be being nitpicky with this instance but,  If so, then this movie is a field of nits (nites?), scrabbling and clawing their way into my brain.  Nothing in the plot goes together, though to be expected it is Michael Bay, explosions and jingoist claptrap are to be expected.

The two best best things about this movie.  No Jon Voight, and I paid matinee pricing.

Even if you're curious about how bad this movie is, stay the hell away and just take everyone elses word for it.

Thoughts On Overlord 2

I was a big fan of the first Overlord, a next-gen Pikmin knockoff with it's own goofy, mischievous soul. While there are some improvements and additions to the game, it doesn't quite go as far  from it's predecessor as I hoped.

The new mounts are pretty good, except for one instance where you have to fight the controls to pass a timed event.  You also have the ability time to time to take direct control of a minion, and while this for the most part it's no different than controlling the Overlord, there are a few instances that are incredibly frustrating.  At one point you're tasked with sneaking into an enemy stronghold to free some of your buddies. This section is not overly hard once you learn the rules, but I think in this day and age pure stealth is a no-no.

Checkpoints are also pretty odd.  You get them when you find a teleport gate, otherwise they are arbitrarily placed and sometimes far between.  I had gotten to the Spider Queen boss and was sick of playing so I quit.  To my surprise, when I started again I was sent waaaay back to the previous boss (a giant, naked ogre thingy), and had to play ~30 minutes to get back to where I was.

The hub where you do all your customizing is also a pain in the butt.  It takes too long to get from one place to the other.  I would have rather just had a menu for upgrading spells and weapons.

Last complaint, the framerate in this game is godawful, not just occasionally but persistently bad.  You would think with a sequel they would refine/polish their tech a bit, but no.

I'm not trying to slag this game too hard, as it's a lot of fun and has a good sense of humor.  The settings are fun and they added a lot more variety to the game.  It is also a stand out because it (gasp!) isn't an FPS filled with hard-assed military guys trudging through burned out grey-brown cities, and for that it deserves some kudos.

PS - The screaming of the baby seals is f***ed up.
