This is insane. Why are we comparing scientific evidence of the moon landing to someone (who claims they went to journalism school all the time) taking their friend's word on an issue even though it's very clear that it's questionable ethics? If he had just recused himself, everything would have been fine. Instead he talks about how his biased side of an issue is clearly true without bothering to investigate any of it, declares the issue closed, then posts links to clearly biased blogs like they're going to persuade anyone. So no, your analogy absolutely does not hold up.
If you want to compare this honestly, I would say this is closer to saying that there were WMDs in Iraq because your good friend told you there were.
