How do you choose a fighting game main?

Anytime a new fighting game that I'm interested in is about to be released, one of the most important questions I find myself faced with—and I'm sure I'm not alone in this—is who the character I'm going to main is.

Usually, after a fair amount of deliberation, I end up maining a character based on aesthetic alone and that character is typically a main antagonist. The first reason I do this is because, well, I like bad guys more than other characters and liking the character you play as is a good motivator to improve, in my opinion. However, a second reason I think I do this is because I get frustrated when I have to think about "which character fits my playstyle the most" and I just resign to what I'm familiar with.

The problem lies in the fact that I don't know what my "playstyle" is. Oftentimes, I'll try all of the characters in a game's roster and not really feel any character that I immediately feel good playing as, so I'll pick an antagonist I like and tell myself that I'll simply adapt to the primary playstyle of that character, which usually ends up being the case.

What are your methods of finding the character that is right for you?

Trying to figure out a way to easily determine my type of fighting game playstyle and how I could easily determine a character I could naturally adapt to instead of struggle to learn, I created this pseudopsychology based 100% accurate quiz based on rigorous study and scientifically obtained data based on eight different fighting game character playstyles I made up:

All-around

No Caption Provided

All-around characters have the tools to deal with any situation they find themselves in, making them the most balanced kinds of fighters, though they might not excel in any one area.

Examples: Ryu, Ken (SF); Yu (P4A); Scorpion, Sub-Zero (MK); Terry Bogard (KoF)

Rushdown

No Caption Provided

The goal of rushdown characters is to constantly be in the opponent's face, never give them any breathing room and to always be on the offense. They are weakest when when distanced from the opponent, but are scary when up close with high damage output and mix-ups.

Examples: Cammy, Fei Long (SF); Chie (P4A); Iori (KoF)

Grappler

No Caption Provided

Grapplers are typically big and very slow, oftentimes with more health than the average to make up for it. Their goal is to patiently approach the opponent in order to deal very high damaging attacks, primarily in the form of command throws.

Examples: Zangief, Hakan (SF); Cerebella (SG); Kanji (P4A); Tager (BB)

Zoning

No Caption Provided

Zoning characters typically have low health, but they make up for it with their ability to control space. They are strongest when distanced from their opponent and will attempt to keep them at bay with a variety of projectiles and traps.

Examples: Dhalsim (SF); Dormammu (MvC3); Yukiko (P4A)

Tricky

No Caption Provided

Tricky characters excel in high mobility, capitalizing on their movement to confuse opponents through feints, teleportation or attacking in multiple directions simultaneously. Usually use a mix of long-range and close-range attacks and they might have a random element to them.

Examples: Faust (GG); Arakune (BB); Teddie (P4A)

Puppet

No Caption Provided

Puppet characters are a special type of fighting game character which involve controlling two separate entities at once to overwhelm the opponent by attacking in multiple different angles simultaneously. These characters usually require more multitasking than other characters.

Examples: Carl (BB); Shadow Labrys (P4A); Eddie (GG)

Stance change

No Caption Provided

Stance change characters are characters that involve changing stances or "modes" depending on the situation they find themselves in. These characters are usually execution heavy and require thinking ahead to determine when the best times to switch modes are in the heat of battle.

Examples: Aigis (P4A); Gen (SF); Amaterasu (MvC3)

Turtle

No Caption Provided

Turtle characters are characters that rely on their defense being stronger than the opponent's offense. Their game plan revolves around punishing opponent's mistakes, whether it's by running away with high mobility in order to frustrate the opponent, by countering the opponent's attacks or via other means.

Examples: Guile (SF), Venom (GG), S-Kill (Divekick)

Aside from "Tricky" (which I practically made up, though I personally think it's valid), all of them are recognized character playstyles, though they might not be categorized in the way I did and these descriptions are very general since there can be several sub-categories to certain playstyles.

Fighting game characters are generally designed to be optimally played in a specific way that fits the above playstyles, but each person still applies their own approach and personal style to their character of choice, meaning that the quiz isn't to determine how a player should play a fighting game, but which kind of character they might enjoy or find success playing as the most.

So after creating this 100% accurate quiz on FG character playstyles, I took things one step further by applying the completely logical process of the Hunter X Hunter Nen diagram to an individual's inherent fighting game character playstyle, which resulted in the following:

Fighting game playstyle chart (analyzing Rushdown)
Fighting game playstyle chart (analyzing Rushdown)

I created the above diagram on a whim and it means nothing. Basically applying HxH's Nen theory directly to fighting game playstyles, the concept is that one has the potential to be 100% efficient playing as a character of their inherent FG character playstyle (i.e. the one obtained in the quiz), 80% efficient with playstyles adjacent to one's primary one, and so on before finally having a max. potential of being 20% efficient with a playstyle opposite to their primary one.

Using Rushdown as one's primary playstyle in the above chart, the person has the potential to be 100% efficient with any rushdown based character, 80% with an All-around or Grappler character and 20% efficient with a Turtle character.

Oftentimes a character will actually belong to several playstyles (i.e. hybrids), so if a character would be a combination of Tricky and Turtle like Yosuke in Persona 4 Arena, a Rushdown character player's max. efficiency potential with Yosuke would be 40% (60% + 20% divided by 2).

Conclusion

The above is total hogwash; please don't take it seriously. But it was fun to come up with and it gave me certain things to think about as, honestly, determining which character to main in a fighting game can be fun initially when you get to try out all of the characters and see which one fits you best, but it can end up frustrating when you just can't commit to one character or another.

I often choose the Rushdown because they're usually more versatile but more often than not i go to the All Rounders

I usually go with characters with good buttons and strong fundamentals. Preferred playstyle varies from game to game but I usually don't play full zoning characters that want to be further than midscreen. My favorite things to do in fighting games is limiting my opponent's actions to the point where he feels somewhat helpless. This doesn't really include Eddie (GG) and Yu Narukami (Persona) because they remove all options at times and autopilot. So I'd rather call them lockdown instead of rushdown because I feel there should be at least some risk involved in rushdown.

GG: Eddie (zoning, lockdown)

P4A: Narukami (all-rounder, lockdown)

BB: Jin (all-rounder)

SF4: Rose (zonish all-rounder)

KOF13: Kyo (rushdown), K' (rushdown), Kim (god), Benimaru (rushdown), Mai (rushdown), Shen (rushdown)

Nice breakdown, I prefer the all-around character but also like a nice mix of quick and grappler styles.

I'm bad at these games. I'm not sure if it's me putting the inputs in wrong, not getting the timings or maybe, just maybe, my comp not being up to scratch. Still, I like to try and play and I tend to go with either characters I think are cool (Juri, M Bison) since if I'm going to suck it might as well be with a character I enjoy on more than just a mechanical level.

Either that or the one with the jiggliest tits.

Fun read Flux. I took the quiz and got puppet! Which is amusing and kinda fitting since im trying to learn Relius.

Personally if I'm going into a game blind I go through the character select screen and pick the one that I think looks coolest. Then if I'm not feeling their play style I move on to someone else. Trying to nail down my preferred play style is harder. I feel like it changes with different games. Recently I find myself gravitating to play styles I have never tried before as it keeps things interesting.

One thing I can say for sure is I will never base a character choice off a tier list. I used to actively dislike them but have grown to enjoy hearing differing opinions on tiers with a grain of salt. They are based on theory fighting, perfect play and tournament results which I all find interesting. The unfortunate effect of them is lack of character diversity in a game when the majority of people use them as a bible. I was recently watching a BBCP stream when the streamer talked about how Rachel in Japan was thought by all to be bottom 4 in early BB days . It took one player, N-O (also a top Venom player in GG) to stand up and say "You're all wrong, this character is godlike and I'm going to show you why." Now Rachel has been ranked in the top 4 or higher of any tier list for BB since. N-O still plays and is not only the highest ranked Rachel player in Japan (right now 19 Dan. 20 has never been reached) but also wins or places high at many tournaments.

So lesson of my story is play who you want and show others why they're good! Unless you are trying to pay the rent with FGs, then be a tier whore because it's an easier path. If that doesn't work then get a job.

PS @fluxwavez. If you're getting CP play Litchi, I think she has just about every play style covered. Except grappler. xD

Aesthetics first, always. I used to play a lot of Vega in SF4 until my friend that I usually play with, got too good. I then proceeded to pick up Cody, he's kinda fun. I still lose though.

I'm bad at being agressive and have more of a turtling and poking style.

Thinking about it, Litchi does have a pretty crazy/unique playstyle. I'll be getting CP day 1 and I'm mostly considering Terumi and Carl right now.

I tend to pick characters based on if I like them or not above tier lists. I figure if I like the character, I'll be a lot more motivated to putting the time in training mode to learn everything about them. Of course, I'm not adverse to picking top tier if I like the character enough (see Me playing Chie in P4A). As long as I have something about the character I really like, be it their story, their aesthetics, or just their move set I'll try to learn them no matter difficulty or playstyle (except charge characters, fuck charging).

SFIV: Rose; though I had a pretty big character crisis getting to her, shuffling from Cody, Ibuki, Sakura, Makoto, Juri, and Abel, before finally settling down on Rose for my main.

P4A: Chie; probably the only fighting game so far where I knew who I wanted to play going in and they actually matched with the playstyle I wanted. Didn't hurt that she's also really friggin good in P4A tier-wise.

GG: ABA; this was before I actually took time to learn fighting games and I would just play with friends, but a lady that fights with a giant key that she's married to? 14 year old me was all over that shit.

KoF13: King, Vice, Leona; Leona is the only charge character I'll ever want to play and that's only because charge time in KoF13 is almost non-existant compared to something like SFIV. I picked King and Vice because my execution isn't at the level to really play KoF yet and they're two of the lowest difficulty characters in the game IMO.

Are you getting it off Japanese PSN store? If so you can have my code for Terumi.

Thanks for the offer, but I'll be importing the physical copy so it should have the code included with it. Sucks that I probably won't be getting Kokonoe immediately since she's totally separate DLC.

You don't intend to keep the Terumi code for yourself?

To be honest, I don't really plan to make a Japanese account anytime soon and also don't really care for Terumi from what I've seen. I'll keep it around but probably won't use it.

I usually pick based on appearance too, but I find that I doo all right with charge characters, though my main in SF4 is actually Guy. I tend to play more defensively and at mid to close range, regardless of character. The quiz showed me as a stance changer, which I haven't done much as in fighting games, but I do the equivalent a lot in in other games, so it's probably worth trying some time.

I tend to main two types of characters - a "regular" like Paul Phoenix and a crazier character with longer, more unpredictable combos like Eddie Gordo. For DOA, that's usually Hitomi and Brad; for Street Fighter, it's usually something like Ryu and Rufus (though I feel pretty okay with most of the classic SF characters).

Mortal Kombat's always been a bit different. I've always been best with Stryker, but otherwise I tend to play it safe with Sub-Zero, Scorpion, or Liu Kang. I used to be pretty okay with the robot ninjas, but not so much anymore.

no shame in admitting you like a character because they look cool. Although this reminds me how horrible character selects get after 24 characters.
