I agree on both convictions. I laughed pretty hard at the "I've never had a salad" statement. Pragmatically, I say whatever good for him, but as a vegetarian the idea of never having EVER eaten a salad (of any kind) was pretty funny.
French Horn players represent! Definitely French Horn if it's instruments we play.
In general, at this point in my life, I'd have to say the Mandolin. There are some pretty great mandolin players out there (looking at you, Chris Thile). Theremins are also really cool, been meaning to find more music. Really the answer for me changes based on mood.
I played League a bit a while back, and they might have changed things a bit by now (a year and a half or so later), but I guess I just I appreciated the presentation in Dota 2 a lot better? Not a knock against LoL really, I just absolutely love the Audio Direction and Design in Dota 2. Plus I don't have to launch another thing, I just have to have steam open (which I do most of the time). I'd say it's the ease of access and history from the first Dota that makes it more prevalent in the games press and such. I do agree with @slyspider that my view being focused on Dota 2 has a lot to do with
dodrad Brad's obsession with it on the site.
@octaslash: Well put, exactly my thoughts on the situation.
Again for me this discussion matters more for the future of the site than these two hires. I think Dan and Jason seem like great fits, and I'm excited to see what they will bring. I just hope that as the site grows it can start to include more diverse voices (both in a critical and entertainment perspective). It shouldn't all be on Patrick's shoulders, but he has openly made a commitment to bringing those voices in with some sort of a freelancer budget or something. My hope is they'd be able to bring on a more-diverse set of guests and contributors for different kinds of podcasts, or videos, or articles, or livestreams. They can drag Brad Muir out for quick looks every once in a while, maybe they could do that for other people (especially if they could get Anna Kipnis, she's super cool) I think Zoe Quinn is really super awesome! She's working on like three games at once, maybe it'd be possible to do some video around one of her projects-in-production or something. Idk. I know all that is way easier said than done, but I think it'd be awesome and the gb crew have kinda talked about stuff like that for a while. Idk if this is constructive or not, but it's my thoughts on the issue (other than the anger about the awful things being said at Leigh Alexander, Zoe, and others).
@arbitrarywater: You are definitely not wrong. If it is Dan, I think he'd be a great fit. Love the videos with his dad, and his dumb humor would fit in for sure. I fell off watching replay but I watched it consitently for a while.
I do agree that I would love to see some more diversity on the site. But who knows, there's also a video producer position (which as we know includes lots of screen time if it follows drew and vinny's examples). Also I hope Patrick does get funding to bring some guest writers/editors for videos and articles so people like zoe quinn, cara ellison, and others can get content here. In the end I'm just excited to see the expansion plans actually happening!
