Wiki Submissions Sit-Rep

Just been taking a look at the list of Pending Sub's I've got going on for wiki content.  Noticed that now some of them have passed the 4 day mark on how long they have been sitting un-modded.  Some of the pages I did content for, which were totally empty when I made up the pages I submitted, are now filled with things so I'm guessing those ones will no doubt be rejected.  Sucks really as I put a fair bit of work into some of the pages I did.

I sent the guys on on the Bombcast an e-mail asking about how they modderate the wiki submissions, like what they do if there is something already there, like do they pick the better article, do they merge bits or do they just reject completely.  Hope they read it out as I'd like to know there official stance on the subject of wiki's.

4 days to wait on a modderation though is getting a bit much when the initial quote was "we will have a turn around of about 24 hours", Dude What ?,  4 days is like 94 hours so that marks been totally missed.  I realise dudes be busy but I guess something in the system needs to change.  Having to wait like almost a week to find out that you've been rejected (hopefully not *touch wood*) kind of puts a dampener on my enthusiasm for updating the wiki's

I did start to save everything write to text files though in a folder on my desktop.  I'd encourage you all to do the same.  That way at least you have a hard copy of your hard work somewhere.

But yeah, something about this wiki mod system needs a dramatic overhaul.  What I don't know exactly but 4 day's, I say again, Dude What ?

Why so Serious ?

The Dark Knight
The Dark Knight
So last night me and a bunch of my friends went into Glasgow to see the new Batman movie The Dark Knight staring Christian Bale and the late Heath Ledger.

We nearly never got to see the movie as because its not long released on the big screen here in the UK every showing of it was fully booked and we had to book tickets online.  My mate Shaun's girlfriend, Debbie, booked the tickets and then lost her bank card which you need to get the tickets once you get to the cinema, so we had to stand for about 30 minutes waiting on them trying to get into the computer to refund those tickets and then sell us the 5 tickets that we had previously bought so we could just pay for them then and there.  It was a nightmare but we got to the 8pm showing of it and managed to see it.

Now I've never really been into comic books and stuff like that and I've never actually seen any of the other Batman movies to my knowledge, the only Batman I've seen before was the animated cartoon series that used to be shown on TV years ago.  So I went into see it on like a completely blank slate, all I knew was that Batman was in it and the Joker was in it.

The movie was really good.  As you watch the movie the whole struggle of good vs. evil plays out between Batman, the Joker, Harvey Dent and Lt. Gordon.  The story is really believable, like I said I've never seen any of the previous Batman movies, just the cartoon so I thought it'd be like watching a comic book but its really believable and realistic.  Really, really dark too.  I was really surprised that here in the UK that movie was a 12A because I think if I was 12 the Joker would scare the ever loving shit out of me.

The acting was really good, specially from Heath Ledger.  My friends were all in agreement that even though they had previously thought Jack Nicholson was the best Joker, Ledgers portrayal of him was spot on and it really stole the show.  I can see why the Academy Awards are preparing to gift him with a posthumous award for it.  It was really believable and by far the best character in the movie.  The scene right at the beginning when he's talking to all the mob guys and he did the disappearing pencil trick, I almost burst a side laughing it was so funny the way he did it.

The casting overall was spot on I thought.  Michael Caine as Alfred the butler was awesome as he suits that role down to the ground,  Morgan Freeman as the Batman equivalent of Q from the James Bond movies was also a great choice.  I liked the guy who played Lt. James Gordan, Gary Oldman, although I got him totally mixed up with the guy who played one of the Flight Instructors in Top Gun.  Aaron Eckhart does a great job as Harvey Dent as well, I swear he looks a bit like Sean Bean though.

The special effects were awesome, lots of things blowing up, a great car chase scene, as well as some really good CGI, well I assume its CGI, towards the end of the movie but I won't get into that too much as it'll give too much of the story away.  Its probably common knowledge to any Batman fan but if your like ignorant to a lot of the back story of these characters like me it came as a total surprise to me.

One thing I will point out though. I LOVE the Bat-bike.  American Chopper eat your heart out!  I so want one of those.

So yeah I HIGHLY recommend this movie.  If you haven't seen it go now.  Buyer beware though, the movie is 2 and a half hours long so go to the bathroom BEFORE it starts and don't do what I did, sit for the last hour dying for the bathroom as I'd drank about a gallon of Sprite, not wanting to move because your totally engrossed in the story.  You get fooled into thinking the movies about to end about half way though it as well and then its takes a U-turn and goes away into something else, or at least I got fooled by this, but yeah its still a really good movie and one you really have to see.

New Xbox 360 Dashboard Impressions

New 360 Dashboard front end.
New 360 Dashboard front end.
E3 presentations from the big 3 have always been a mixed bag if you live anywhere outside of the USA.  Most of the stuff that gets announced is focused mainly at the USA and half the stuff announced never makes it to European shores, a robust Video Marketplace for example.  So going into this years E3 I thought it would be more of the same.  That was until I heard the news about the new 360 Dashboard.  For once here was something that everyone would be getting in the Fall update regardless of geographical location.

The current 360 dash is a complete mess.  I think it was Jeff or Ryan on the Bombcast that said that when they designed it the first time around they obviously didn't think that it would become so bloated with content like it is now.  There are ad's shoehorned into every little spare piece of empty screen and half the time the dash runs as slow as a week in the county jail.  It really sucks hard in its current incarnation.  So its about time they got around to updating it.

The new look Marketplace.
The new look Marketplace.
I think the new dash looks awesome but lets get the obvious out the way first, it looks like a cross between Apple's Cover Flow and Nintendo's Mii plaza.  The way all the blades now move across the screen as you thumb through them just smacks of Cover Flow, which isn't a bad thing as I really like Cover Flow and I think it suits the 360.  It makes the 360 dash look a lot more modern, suave and sophisticated.  It looks a lot cleaner, all the ad's have been taken out as apparently they will have more and better ways to advertise in the actual marketplace section and it looks less cluttered.  It just looks like they have put a lot of thought into it and really laid it out for easier navigation.

The whole Mii avatar thing however is like a step in the opposite direction.  Going down the immature route like what Nintendo has been taking.  With this inclusion Microsoft obviously has its mind set on releasing that new motion controller that's in the works no doubt with a slew of mini-game compilations to follow which use these avatars.  I don't honestly think that they put these in just so you could play 1 vs. 100.  Don't get me wrong though.  I actually like the avatars.  They have been designed by RARE, the people that brought you Viva Pinata and Banjo Kazooie, who I think are awesome and you know they won't be rubbish if they had a hand in making them.

What I do worry about though is the customization of them.  I get the impression that down the line you'll be able to download more stuff for them to wear and to personalize them with but I get the feeling that unless your in the USA your options might be somewhat limited.  Look at themes and gamer pictures right now.  The USA gets a truckload of movie and television related stuff on there marketplace that no-one else gets thanks to license rights.  I think this is what will be what might happen with the avatars.  So while your wearing your bog standard green polo-neck your buddy in California will be dressed up like Indiana Jones, Speed Racer or a sweet 7-11 apron.  I'm looking at you Mr. Gerstmann.

My worries about the avatars though are only a minor point on an otherwise huge improvement on the current dashboard.  They have completely revamped it.  Right down to even when you push the big 360 button on the controller.  Before it used to slide out from the side but after the update it'll appear in the middle of the screen and look like a scaled down version of the current dash.

I honestly can't wait for the fall update to roll round so I can get my hands on this bad boy.  Hopefully the guys at Giant Bomb will get a hands on with it before we all do so they can give us there opinions on it after having played about with it.  Until we see it in real life and get a hands on we can only guess if it'll run as well as it looks.

Giant Bombsite First Impressions.

So this is my first day on Giant Bomb, I've set up my account and I've had a look around the place.  I have to say that it "smells very clean".  Looks good !

When they said on the podcast to go check out the guys over at ComicVine they weren't kidding as its the same basic layout.  Its very well presented, stuff seems real easy to find.  It doesn't look at all overly commercial like, dare I mention, Gamespot does.  As far as I'm concerned now Gamespot is practically dead as all the guys I tuned into to watch on On the Spot and the Hotspot are either here or have moved on top pastures new, Alex Navaro @ Harmonix for example.

But yeah if any of the guys on the Giant Bomb crew read this you should give yourself a huge pat on the back as you've done well.  Site looks great and long may she reign.  Giant Bomb FTW!
