Video game IP's have evolved from just a hero and a collection of villains into entire worlds and universes that they inhabit.  With the increased scope of IP's and the time and money now devoted to them, it's a great return on your investment to tell multiple stories in the same universe, especially if you're lucky enough to find one the public wants to experience over and over again.  HALO, MGS, Warcraft, Half-Life, Fable, Elder Scrolls, and Fallout spring to mind as not just great franchises, but worlds that people have shown the desire to inhabit over and over.
I think this shift in focus from games to worlds is going to change the way the industry sees "sequels" and "spinoffs".

I think any portable installment in a franchise rooted on a big console (GoW: Chains of Olympus, MGS: Portable Ops & Peace Walker) would find an audience on PSN of people like me who don't own a PSP, but would still like to experience the entire story of these franchises.  I'd rather play through the game to see what happens than just look up cutscenes online to fill in the blanks.

If they truly ended the Solid Snake Saga in Guns of the Patriots, it would be wise to call this Metal Gear Rising.  Since it is MGS RIsing, I'm guessing that this is a spinoff and will not be the first chapter of a new Saga.

It is kind of puzzling to see a spinoff on the main console; so far they've always kept the spinoffs on handheld.  If MGS4's engine was as good as I hear, it makes sense for them to want to get some more value out of it.

While I'm still bummed that MGS4 has not made it to 360 yet, it would be intriguing if MGS Rising detailed Raiden's actions surrounding the events of MGS4.  If done correctly, this is a truly great gaming experience.

I remember how cool it felt to play Half Life, Opposing Force, and Blue Shift: being able to see the events of the Black Mesa Incident from three different points of view.  It was the coolest when you stumbled on an event you played in a previous game and saw it from a different point of view.
This was also done with Resident Evil 2, where you could unlock and play through the game as a character you crossed paths with in the first playthrough.

I guess the fundamental problem with his original point is that he's taking a wide array of criticisms and assuming they call come from the same group of people.

The folks who bag on the MGS gameplay and cutscenese are likely not the group pining for Guns of the Patriots to come to the 360.
The people who do want MGS4 for the 360 are probably happy to see the first step in MGS porting to the 360, but would still like he masterpiece to show up sometime.

The situation is only ironic if all of the criticisms are attributable to the same people.  But they're not; so it isn't...

I'd say the lack of excitement has partly to do with the uncertainty about whether this is THE next Metal Gear Solid game or just a spinoff.  If this is Kojima's version of Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks for MGS, then it's a real downer.

The Guns of the Patriots  rumors became so heated that anything less was going to result in an MGS4 hangover.  When you're expecting a crack at what has been considered by many to be one of the greatest games ever made and you end up with a spinoff tite, it's not going to be totally fulfilling.
Also, MGS really defined the Stealh Action genre, and now this Metal Gear (suspected) hack & slash game is wading into territory that may find it a pale imitiation of better franchises like Devil May Cry and Ninja Gaiden.

It also goes without saying that if a true sequel to MGS4 for PS3 is revealed this week, MGS: RIsing will have the shortest rise & fall of any game in recent memory.  Kojima wouldn't punk Raiden like that yet again, would he?

All in all, this reminds me being kid who asked for Transformers for Christmas and got Go-Bots instead...

So, Guns of the Patriots remains the White Whale for 360 users.  I'd say there's one year left for this to make it to the 360.

  • MGS4 just went Greatest Hits, which is really the last stage of a popular title's lifecycle.  After the sales bump from this, the game is essentially retired and any revenue it brings in is gravy.
  • If Konami wants to port MGS4 next year, they can really say that they honored their exclusivity agreement with Sony by allowing them to realize almost all possible revenue from this title before porting it.
  • If Kojima announces MGS5 (if Rising is not an acutal sequel, and is just a spinoff), Sony will be pushing it full-bore next year and MGS4 will be in their rearview-mirror.  At that point a Guns of the Patriots port to the 360 could almost be seen as marketing for the new PS3-exclusive MGS5, (if it exits, of course...)

But if there is no Guns of the Patriots for 360 at E3 2010, pound the last nail in that coffin, because it just not going to happen, ever.

I still play through the entire Legacy of Kain saga every couple of years.
The most compelling, complex story of any franchise I've played.
Terrific dialogue delivered by the best cast of voice-actors ever.
Interesting art-design and architecture.
(If only they could have found a compelling combat system.  Try as they might, they never really made combat fun.)

Sands of Time is probably my favorite game of the PS2 / XBox Generation.  It wasn't the biggest, most advanced, or most ambitious game, but it did what it set out to do very well, and really was a breath of fresh air.  The setting and art design were original and interesting, and they showed that you can use bright color at a time when every action game was using dull earth tones.  The story was not overly complicated, but it was told very well the right touch of humor and excellent voice acting.  The animations were outstanding, and the Princes platforming moves and acrobatic fighting style really made you feel like a badass. (Though I do admit Warrior Within's combat engine was better.)

I have to hand it to Ubisoft; from Prince of Persia to Assassin's Creed:  From art design, character design, superb animations, and solid voice-acting, they really know how to put a slick package together.

This is still installed on my computer, but my PC is five years old and Morrowind pushed it back then.  I do have GOTY for the XBox, so I might just use that one instead, but the mods are tough to live without.

I've always wanted to dive back into the game, since I realized after I finished the main quest and maxed out my House and Faction ranks that the world map was still 2/3 untouched.  I've also only played through one of the Houses and the stealth-based Factions, so there's plenty left to do.

Even after all this time, the size of that game is staggering.

It's impossible to say. Since many of my Fallout sessions come at night, I have woken up many times to see my character just standing there doing nothing after I've fallen asleep for hours on the couch with a controller in my hand...
