Best of 2011

Honorable mentions: Skyrim (would have certainly made the list with more play time, but I just got it recently and have only invested about 6 hours so far), Gears 3 (enjoyed the gameplay more than any other installment in the franchise, but never really cared much for the franchise's narrative and prefer FPS to TPS for my multiplayer), Assassin's Creed Revelations (still a fan of the AC formula, but it's growing a bit stale after 3 years of annual installments) and Deus Ex: HR (A+ atmosphere and fun gameplay, but some flaws in story and graphics).

  • I can't heap enough praise on this game. Challenging puzzle design, a memorable story with fantastic writing, some of the best voice work I've ever heard in a game, addictive co-op gameplay and free DLC on 360 (a rarity). Portal 2 isn't just my favorite game this year -- it has cemented its place among my list of all time favorites. A true masterpiece.

  • Two years ago I was blindsided by Batman: Arkham Asylum. I certainly wasn't expecting a licensed game, much less one developed by a rookie studio, to impress me so much with its graphics, gameplay and story. But Arkham Asylum was a total home run, and I placed it first on my 2009 GOTY list. Despite the quality of AA, in the months leading up to the release of Arkham City I was skeptical that Rocksteady could repeat their success. Thankfully, Arkham City proved to be a more than capable sequel. The new open world setting was a great improvement, and the already excellent combat was refined to near perfection. The ending to the story was excellent, and now that I've finished the campaign I'll be diving into the game's many excellent challenge maps to occupy my time. I can't wait to see what Rocksteady brings us in the future.

  • I knew that the folks at Supergiant Games had created something special with Bastion when I watched their "Building the Bastion" videos here on GB, but I honestly wasn't expecting such an excellent final product. Everything about Bastion, from its unique omnipresent narration to its wonderful graphical style to its fluid combat, combines to produce a game that compels you to keep playing for hours on end.

  • The single player campaign was underwhelming, and there are plenty of rough edges that make the game seem somewhat unfinished (can't modify the kit of your Russian soldier unless in a game, can't quit out of a match between rounds, groups of friends are routinely split up when using the quick match search, etc.) but none of that diminishes from the absolute fun of this game's multiplayer. Whether you're carefully sneaking around enemy positions as a recon class, blasting through walls with a tank, dogfighting with an enemy in a jet or base-jumping off the cliff-side helipad on Damavand Peak, Battlefield 3 is full of player-created memorable moments.

  • An amazing thrill ride, and a shining example of quality third-person shooting mechanics. Not since the original Bioshock have I been so blown away by the immersive atmosphere of a game.

  • I was really worried that the value wouldn't be there at $60, but after reading numerous glowing reviews of this game I decided to pick it up and I'm very glad I did. Absolutely fantastic 2D platforming that is complemented by an unbelievable art style.

  • Simply the greatest racing sim ever created. I thought that I had exhausted my desire to race, unlock, buy and tune a huge garage full of cars with Forza 3, but Forza 4 hooked me even more than its predecessor.

  • I played this game on 360 so the controls weren't always super precise, but nonetheless I really enjoyed the gameplay of From Dust and the way it executed on a unique premise. The story missions and challenge levels were nice, but the real reason that I enjoyed this game as much as I did was simply due to the fact that sandbox-style of environment manipulation was so addicting.

  • After being sucked back into the world of Pokemon last year with Soul Silver, I was actively anticipating the release of a new Pokemon game for the first time in half a decade. I was a little worried that Pokemon Black would be a letdown after Soul Silver since it wouldn't come with so much built-in nostalgia, but I was happy to discover a slew of quality updates to the Pokemon formula that tangibly improved the gameplay. I'll continue to sink time into leveling and battling my Pokemon on Black version while waiting eagerly for the franchise's next installment.
