My GOTY's 1997 - 2010

Game Of The Year (1997 - to date)

From the year of farming to the year of space traveling with every thing from spoon collecting to killing the devil in between. This is: My games of the years past!

1. Mass Effect 2

2010: Imagine a game where everything works as close to perfect as it is possible. Imagine that game having a fantastic story with awesome characters. That game is Mass Effect 2.

2. Dragon Age: Origins

2009: Another great living world with a lot of great characters and one hell of a story from BioWare. The only thing that was different this time was the fact that the only game that was almost as good as Dragon Age: Origins was Uncharted 2: Among Thieves.

3. Grand Theft Auto IV

2008: The amount of detail, the fantastic story, the crazy characters and finally the mature Grand Theft Auto that I've been waiting for.

4. Mass Effect

2007: One of the greatest games ever by today’s greatest game studio. The graphics were busted and the game play sucked every now and then. But man... The universe that BioWare created was breath taking. And of course; hearing Wrex say "Shepard" could save the worse day!

5. The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

2006: The sunrise in Anvil, all the spoons that I collected, my fantastic runs from the cave to Chejdinhal and... My fantastic run that took 50 minutes. It took a long, long while for me to drop this game. And when I did, it wasn't because of tiredness; it was because of one hell of a crack in the disk.

6. Jade Empire

2005: Oh Jade Empire... A game with fantastic story, even more fantastic music and - I said it before and I'll say it again - the most fun I had playing video games.

7. Halo 2

2004: The story was a huge disappointment, but this game changed it all. Literally

8. Beyond Good & Evil

2003: Oh. My. God. This game is not a game... This is a interactive masterpiece that deserves to be praised in all eternity. Beyond Good And Evil had great characters, awesome gameplay and also one of the most fun with any video game ever.

9. Mafia

2002: While the 3D debut of the Grand Theft Auto franchise pretty much did that I lost all hope for this game it turned out to be one of my favorite games of all time. Awesome story and one hell of a cast made this a very easy choice, really.

10. Grand Theft Auto III

2001: Two words: LIBERTY CITY!

11. Diablo II

2000: Not much to say here, Diablo II is probably the best game from Blizzard to date, together with the original Diablo. Fantastic music, a great story, even greater world and fun classes to play around with made this game one hell of an experience.

12. Final Fantasy VIII

1999: Well, if Ocarina of Time had me stucked for way too long then Final Fantasy VIII had me stucked for way too long times three. A great story combined with great characters and at the time breath taking graphics was almost enough. The fact that I ended up grinding the game for months basically put it on the top of 1999.

13. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

1998: Not the best Legend of Zelda games, but not that far of. Ocarina of Time is a very good game that had me hooked in front of the TV way to long.

14. Harvest Moon

1997: Harvest Moon for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System is not only the best game of 1997 but also the best game... pretty much ever! Why? Fantastic graphics, one hell of a charming world and game time worth everything!

Good list. I see you're something of a BioWare fan. I still gotta play Jade Empire myself, I've started a playthrough on two occasions, and it seemed interesting, but I didn't get far enough to get to the point where I was hooked.

Posted by fRAWRst

I don't know whats weirder, the fact that you picked FF8 as your GOTY or that i pretty much entirely agree with your list. kudos dude, your just like me apparently.

Posted by AlexW00d

Stucked? You've got to be kidding me.

Posted by moelarrycurly

Everyone knows that Link's Awakening is the best Zelda game.

Edited by Soapy86

Why start at 1997? Why not 1996 or 1998?

Anyway, cool list. I might make something similar.

Posted by Fruitcocoa
@FreakAche: The funny thing is that Dragon Age: Origins is the only game that I bought only because it was a BioWare game. You really should pick up Jade Empire (Guess you know that it's on Xbox Live Originals). Alot of "Holy..." moments in the game!

I couldn't make a similar list if I tried, it's too hard for me to remember what games came out when and which I enjoyed the most.  I can only do that for a handful of years.

I know that Halo 2 wasn't my favorite game in the year Half Life 2 came out.

Final Fantasy VIII?
Dude - awesome. You're going to get far in life.

Kind of the year when I started playing alot of games. Before 97 it was all about Super Mario Bros 3 and some arcade games. Also, through the years I've gone back to play alot of games from these years and I think that 96 and back would be unfair for me to judge.

Harvest Moon? The best game ever? That's so wrong, it's Glenn Beck.

Edited by Jack268

2010: World of Warcraft: Cataclysm
2009: Batman: Arkham Asylum
2008: Mirror's Edge (Noticed Burnout Paradise and DMC4 were released almost 3 years ago when looking through this year, holy shit)
2007: World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade (Crysis, Mass Effect, Skate and Halo 3 were really good too, overall a great year)
2006: BF2142. (dry year)
2005: Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory or BF2. Both are incredible games, probably the finest their series will ever be. Also, Sly 3... This was a good year.
2004: Fable, Jak 3 VERY close second
2003: Beyond Good & Evil, Warcraft 3: TFT very close second.
2002: Sly Cooper, Warcraft 3, GTA: VC and Ratchet & Clank. What a godly year.
2001: Runescape (yup, it is the game I played the most this year) Halo: CE was nice, but I didn't play much until it was on PC
2000: Pokemon Gold & Silver(GODLIKE). The Sims, Perfect Dark, Diablo 2 and Tekken Tag Tournament were pretty grand too.
1999: Counter Strike. I also played a damn lot of Rollercoaster Tycoon, but compared to CS it doesn't have a very long lasting appeal.
1998: Pokemon Red & Blue. Holy shit man, those games probably changed my life. Tekken 3 and Spyro were great but dude, fucking pokemon. Can't believe I was only 4 when I was playing this.
1997: Goldeneye 007. Have fond memories of playing this with my cousin. He was like 14 at the time and it was still a blast.

I also have very dim memories of playing  http://www.giantbomb.com/super-solvers-challenge-of-the-ancient-empires/61-6209/ from basically when I was born until I got my PS2. That game was incredible. I found out just last week what the real name of "SSA.EXE" was ^^

That's my list, thanks for bringing the topic up OP, I nostalgiad hard.

By the way, my choices probably don't make much sense to people born in the 80's (Y U NO MORROWIND) but yeah, I was young okay? ^^

Posted by Fruitcocoa
@Jack268: You just made me want to play Rollercoaster Tycoon so bad I think I'm going to install it!

@CarlSmith:  How could you say Harvest moon is GOTY 97' and also the best game ever, but not have Harvest moon back to nature which is in fact THE harvest moon game not be GOTY 2000?
Posted by Fruitcocoa
@keyhunter: Yeah, you know the problem with that game is that I couldn't get my hands on it until like 2006. I live in Europe and it was very, very hard to find that game (it was released 2001 here and the whole 3D Grand Theft Auto hype was way to hard to keep yourself out of). But I see your point, I love Harvest Moon Back To Nature and honestly - consider it as a runner-up for Grand Theft Auto III.
Posted by Jack268
@CarlSmith: Well, this thread made me want to play every game I listed again ^^

Seriously, though, this is a good list. You certainly have fine taste in video games. Even though I really didn't like Final Fantasy VIII very much.

I love your list, and agree 100% ESPECIALLY with the first 6. and 4 Bioware games in the top 6, that's awesome :D But I would've gone for  The Witcher for 2007, even though I loved ME more than ME2. But still, happy to see Jade Empire, Oblivion and DA:O there :)

Posted by Fruitcocoa
@armaan8014 Awesome dude, thanks! I kind of see your point with the Witcher. To be honest I had a really bad time with the game the first time. It grew though, but I never got out of my weird start with it. :/

I was all "Yeah okay...decent list"

Then I saw Harvest Moon and it became a fucking fantastic list.

Edited by Rhode

Very strong and safe list. You've got all the hard hitters there, and there's nothing wrong with that. With the occasional niche game like Beyond Good & Evil on the list you've got it all covered man. Only thing missing from an all around bulletproof list would be a game like SotC, or even better: Ico.

I couldn't compose a list like that right now though, I can't remember what I played each year. Though titles like Majora's Mask, Warcraft 3 and the first Mass Effect would make it for sure.
