My Probably GOTY 2013 List

Honorable mentions

Tomb Raider, but that game sets the player up for such thrill and excitement only to slink into mediocre combat and drawn out set-pieces.

Assassins Creed IV: I went back and played Assassins Creed III after playing Black Flag and it's very clear that this is a greatly improved game, but AC just isn't noteworthy enough to put on GOTY lists anymore.

Battlefield 4: It's a very nice looking game but not my kind of thing.

DmC: It knows what it is and does it well, I just didn't feel properly motivated to finish it...

Bioshock Infinite: I was profoundly moved by it's beautiful landscapes and the religious imagery at the start as well as scenes of Booker and Elizabeth moving through the lighthouses at the end but the combat just wasn't enjoyable enough.

GTA 5: It had some fun moments and I enjoyed the story but it just wouldn't run properly for me on my 360, the pop-in was atrocious, literally fences and cars rendering in 5 feet in front of my car, ruined the whole experience for me. And the complete shit-show of the online launch was just pathetic. I guess it was interesting to watch from an industry standpoint, but what a fuck up that was...

  • I went in expecting a game that was kind of cute and quirky and short but playing this game late one Saturday night with a beer in my hand, reading through peoples diary's and notes, seeing the TV recordings of the X-files on VHS, finding copies of the Dad's repeatedly re-written manuscripts, it all hit me pretty hard. I didn't expect that at all, it moved me in a way that was infinitely sad at the same time as being shockingly beautiful, and also exciting. For me it outdid last years "Journey" in terms of emotional value. This is an important game.

  • Joels worn out, worn down face and expressions made this game for me. This was the year of Troy Baker, he has a way of making you care about the things he says, sorry Nolan North. This game has possibly one of the greatest opening minutes in game history, Mega Man 2 eat your heart out.I didn't find the mechanics particularly fun but the visuals and the tightly woven tale affected me where it mattered. just a word to the wise, if you're feeling a little down over Christmas, don't play this game, it will grind you into the floor.

  • Somehow managed to look better than Origins and took platforming mechanics to new heights, this game knows what fun is and it just shoves it down your throat while you take it smiling.

  • A game that kept building and building upon tons of exciting premises that says "fuck you" to your brain and sense of game design and general logic of your mind.

  • The original trailer for this had me balls to the wall excited, I remember audibly reacting to it the first time I saw it> great great game that just screams "FUN!" at you you from the get go and surprises and delights the entire way. It's the first "kick in the ass holy shit I have to get this game" Mario has done since Mario Galaxy 1

  • Time to enter the Lang Zone! I think everyone here on Giant Bomb knows what Divekick is all about, I won't use words.

  • I've been a Splinter Cell nerd since I was about 8 years old and having played all of the games at least 3 times each I have to admit this game was a pretty flawless experience. It has a way of making the player feel truly badass in a way that hasn't happened since Batman: Arkham Asylum first did it. The lack of Michael Ironside really put a dent in my enjoyment of it though.

  • Because it's a really cool game with a surprising amount of levels that offer fun varieties for killing people that give you a sense of reward for figuring them out. It didn't get enough attention at the end of last year so I'm putting it on here.

  • I haven't played it yet but its a Zelda game dammit, it's probably very good. The morphing ability seems a bit funky but I know this game will be perfect.

  • I was interested in this the second I found out about it and although all the rules got to be far too much to handle I won't let that detract from the game, obviously that's the natural progression the game had to follow to remain interesting. "I come back with proper papers".

  • Because always Mirror's Edge.
