Whiskey Media's Official Minecraft Server

Server status: [Online]

HEY EVERYONE X2, FUCK

Server is brand new again! Again! And again!

SERVER RULES

  • Must be 18 or older.
  • Must be a member of Giant Bomb. Must have been a member for more than a month. Don't tell your cousin's nephew about the server; I won't add him. Ask me, and maybe I'll make an exception. They still need to be 18 or older.
  • Don't touch other people's things unless given permission by them.
  • Do not build view-destroying sky castles or sky bridges.[1]
  • Don't pour lava from high places, it's ugly and difficult to manage. Don't build your name out of blocks. Don't build a giant stickman taking a piss. Don't build something really out-of-character near or in someone's themed town.[2]
  • Do not attempt to deconstruct others' works if you feel they have broken the rules. Tell me, then I'll look into it.
  • Do not pester or bully new users.
  • Do not burn trees down. Fire spreads.
  • If you leave the server for over a month and have a project that is unfinished and that blocks usable space, then it will be taken down, unless a sign is erected saying when you will be back.
  • Minecart tracks are to be built at least 15 blocks underground, so as to not disrupt the view or clutter up possible building space (kinda like the real world), unless your project makes more sense above ground. Ask if you're unsure.
  • Portals do indeed work, and they take you to the Nether, but please refrain form building too many. There are a couple set up in each major city, but too many and things will get out of control.
  • Have common sense.

[1]
If you're wondering why there's a rule against this, it comes from me playing the game awhile. Basically: every new user wants to create a floating city, or a railway, or an air-bridge, or a floating castle. In moderation, they could be great (and yours could be one of the good ones), but in reality, every single person has given up on them, in the process creating a really generic hunk of view-destroying rock. It's basically just me trying to keep the server looking nice.
[2]
This may seem confusing at first. Basically, you can build wherever you want, as long as there's room, and as long as you don't disturb anyone's stuff. If you're unsure about building something somewhere, just ask around.

How to Get in

  • Read the rules above. Private message me questions if you have them.
  • I'd prefer a private message, but you could just comment here and request to be whitelisted. Make sure you tell me your Minecraft name!
  • Put 207.210.253.107 into the "Multiplayer" section from Minecraft's main menu; put whatever you want for the name of the server.

Up close on a familiar image:

Credit goes to tompsweeney (Massif on the forums) for using his programming wizardry to render this beast.

@Subjugation: Don't have to. The internet beat me to the punch. Anyways, it says:

1. Well played Internets you are good

2. These Names will be random and confusing

3. Each Spell costs experience levels

So, it seems that mobs and animals are turned off, so food-getting is not the greatest right now. On the plus side, it is safe at all times of the day.

Yeah, I forgot I changed it almost right before the server went down. We were talking about just leaving them off until endermen are neutered, as the (sniff) previous server looked like swiss cheese. As far as the food thing goes... I didn't think about that :P I can spawn a ton and put some in some chests for now.

@Subjugation: I just tested it to see if I could get on, and I can.

Also, 1.9 PR3 is out and it has potions. Fire Resistance protects from lava according to the wiki (which is amazing), and I'm looking forward to water breathing.

@FunExplosions: Wow, it changed again already? I still have 207.210.252.206. I'll try that IP and see if it fixes things. Fingers crossed.

Edit: Well, I can poll the server now but I still get the connection refused: connect error. Le sigh.

It would appear that "Enderdragons" as it were, are supposed to be another life-form in the upcoming "The Ender" realm that can only be entered through portals naturally found in Stronghold locations. I'm sure from there it won't be hard to reskin them and make them rare boss monsters in the standard plane of existence, most probably tied to the area immediately surrounding a Dragon Lair biome or something like that. Should add a neat "boss fight" scenario, one thing that Terraria definitely has going for it over Minecraft.

@Shademonger: That sounds pretty awesome. I like how their outline looks. I knew it was only a matter of time until Dragons happened.

The only thing that'll suck is trying to get past that damned Silverfish spawner, unless we find a stronghold before mobs come back on.

So, we have less than a month left of server hosting with our current hosters. I figure we can scrounge together hopefully-enough donations to pay for things. It will cost around 350-400 dollars for a year, but we don't have to (and shouldn't) pay that way; we can pay-as-we-go, monthly. I'm gonna look around at potential hosters; you're all welcome to do the same, although the only requirement is that you guys don't go with ArtOfWar.com. They suck.

Also, I won't be championing the server this time around. I'm taking the backseat as just another Minecrafter, and letting someone else be the admin. It's not too much work, but there's a learning curve. I personally just want to be able to take a break from games for awhile. I'm beat.

Anyways,

First up: Find a site. When everyone agrees on the hoster, we figure out about how many donations and how much money we'll need for the first month or the first few months or whatever. If you're worried about pooling the money with strangers, we can pool the money in my Minecraft-only Paypal account. My email address for that account is in my Giant Bomb mini-bio.

Under better circumstances I would love to reign over a server... eh. I mean be admin. Alas, my low bandwith and totalitarian (controlfreak) nature would make this hard. I don't envy such a task.
So I want to thank you @FunExplosions for the few months I have known you. Well done. Don't fret over the problems. As a famous slogan says - "Shit happens".
What we leave behind us is just a testament of what was. A lone builder creating his house under constant attack. Or more poetically, what we all have built together since this server saw it first light of civilization.
I miss - insert all the names of places long gone-, but the memories will last a lifetime. Besids, we can build more stuff together.
I will chip in on a donation and happy be a mod if someone wants to be admin, but needs help. I trust the core crowd here, we can make this work people!

@Shademonger: Has been a great driver of crazy co-op creations. I suggest we, everyone, come up with some ideas and then create some guidlines on how to build them. So that people in different timezones can still keep on building.
I personally find it hard to understand other peoples designs, even if I see them. I need to feel them. (I guess I'm kinda crazy) so some simple guidlines will help with that.
I really want to recreate Alsatias arena.

I assume that when we change hosting this current map will be come with us? Eventhough we just startet fresh, again.
If it is possible I would really love to have the old map, but I guess it is a large file?
Like, seriously. If it is crazy big I would happily pay for a usb stick and postage so that I can have it! (so I guess I'm kinda crazy).

@Subjugation: So I just figured out who the hell you were. I've been thinking you were someone new for the past few days. Change your name when your account upgraded?

Anyways, I paid for my server all at once for the semi-discounted yearly rate. It was a big mistake that made ditching their shitty services impossible, so that's why I'm super adamant about monthly payments this time around. They somehow had a good rep. From what I gather from forum posts, their services used to be great, but went downhill by some insane degree after a certain point of expansion. There's even a website dedicated to people posting their ArtOfWar complaints. Fucking insane.

Er, back on topic,

-The server was for 20 people. Keep in mind, we never -- as far as I've seen -- got to even 15 people. Our most was around 12-14, I think. I'd say a cap of 15 is smart. This doesn't add to the price, because player limits are easily configurable by the default Minecraft config file.

-RAM: 1024MB, costing $22/month more than the standard 512MB

-Basic Webhosting services at $7.95/month

-Opted out of VoIP (voice over services like TeamSpeak, Ventrilo, etc.), saving $4.50/month

-Opted out of backup services, saving $5.00/month (making backups is easy for the admin to do themselves).

-Altogether, that stuff, plus the general fee, totaled $431.46 for a year, and that's with a 25% discount for the yearly rate (con-artist rate). Take that off and it would have been $539.33.

In. Sane.

@Marnox: I can totally get you the old world file. I'll upload it again pretty soon, I guess. It'll just be a temporary upload spot on MegaUpload, so everyone just let me know when a good time is. And yeah, whoever the next admin is, I'll just upload our current world file, as well.

Also, I think your idea for group building is great. I've been wanting to do some co-op builds, but it's too hard (like you said) to understand what the other player is thinking. Maybe we can post some guidelines in here as to what a particular build will look like, and what steps will be required. We need to make like a multi-staged process, with multiple goals along the way, so people don't lose track of what they're currently building towards. If anyone has some good ways to do that, let's hear 'em!

@FunExplosions: Hahaha, threw you for a loop huh? I blew my single name change on a less troll susceptible name. I held onto that "weeman" name for over a decade so it was due for a change.

So ~ $36/month? You may have been robbed, sir.

First thread I looked at had this, which is around the player slots you suggested:

Redstone Tier

  • 840MB Dedicated RAM, 1.5GB Burst RAM
  • Suitable for up to 16 players, with mod use.
  • Pricing:
    • Monthly pricing: $12.95 per month
    • Quarterly pricing: $11.95 per month
    • Semi-annual pricing: $7.05 per month - use coupon code "Adventure" at checkout!

From this thread.

Their price-comparable option to what you ended up paying would be this:

New! Adventure Tier

  • 3.6GB Dedicated RAM, 5GB Burst RAM
  • Suitable for up to 80 players, with mod use.
  • Pricing:
    • Monthly pricing: $38.95 per month
    • Quarterly pricing: $36.95 per month
    • Semi-Annual pricing: $23.80 per month - use coupon code "Adventure" at checkout!

so ... I feel kinda bummed for you.

Anyway, there are several different services with threads on that Minecraftforums.net board, and I think investigating with due diligence is something that we all understand the importance of by now with the frustration we've endured with ArtOfWar.

I will throw my hat in the ring and say that I am willing to pick up the server. The prices I'm seeing would not impose a significant financial burden, and I happen to have enough free time at the moment that I'm comfortable acting as an admin and handling server business.

As for hosts, right now I like the look of the minecraftserver.net people. In addition to an auspicious name, the reviews seem very solid (http://www.bestminecrafthosts.com/minecraftserver-net/) and the prices are reasonable. I am waffling between two plans:

Dirt: $12.50 - 512MB of dedicated Ram (Supports 1-10 players)

Wood: $25.00 - 1GB of dedicated Ram (Supports 1-20 players)

512 RAM seems awfully tiny, but double the RAM = double the price. Opinions are welcome. I'll also contact a friend of mine who runs a Minecraft server for the DC area and see what he recommends, but I suspect he has his own hardware. He's that kind of guy.

If anyone else has other thoughts or service recommendations, I'd love to hear them!

@Subjugation: ...I was wondering why I saw "weeman" stop posting. New Name's pretty good.

@Nodderly: The only other hosting site I've heard of is VeryGames.net, though I haven't checked out their stuff myself. The only reason I know about them is that one of the guys who helps run the Minecraft Workbench site (LuclinMCWB) uses them to run his personal servers.

There's also the server client you can download, though I'm not sure how that works either. Just tossing out suggestions and thoughts.

@Capum15: Thanks for the tip! I'll look into VeryGames.net.

I actually have some spare computers that could probably run the server client, but I don't think my cable internet would offer sufficient bandwidth and I'd worry about ruining someone's day every time I turned on Netflix streaming and I really like to watch Breaking Bad on Netflix and OH GOD I'M OUT OF CONTROL.

@Massif: I have a test server running now. I'd be happy to PM you the info if you want to get on and check it out! I'm open to sharing the admin costs/duties as well. I think the host I'm using will allow me to designate additional owners/admins, but I'm still accustoming myself to the user panel etc. Backups are already automated.

As for credit card info, no worries. It works through PayPal.

@FunExplosions I'm very excited about this! How can I get a copy of the current world from you? Is the file small enough to send? I can give you my email. As soon as I have that, the new server can be up and running. I understand why you'd not want to be a mod. If you ever change your mind, I'd be happy to make you one. You've done a great job maintaining the server from day one.

Giant Bomb test server is now in open beta! Once I get the world file from Fun we'll return to what we were doing, but for now, I have the whitelist turned off. If anybody wants to log on to the new server and check out the new plugins, the info is:

Name: Giant Bomb Test

IP: 208.115.114.210:25632

The more people we get on here, the better. If the server is going to crap out when we have five people on it, I'd like to find out now. :D

Hey guys, I'm stopping the server so I can zip it and send it to Nodderly. Then he's gonna run it from his server. He's the new server owner, alongside -- I think -- Massif(tompsweeney).

@Nodderly: @Massif: I'm also gonna message the mods to see if they'll be ready to sticky a new thread as the "official" minecraft server.

Wow, and didn't see anything posted in the game but I was watching some football, too.  Guess my last save point will still be there.   Just when I get to my last cave spider spawn in the mine on my island, I find another one!

Score: 7 cave spider spawns, 2 sprider spawns, 1 skelly spawn and 1 zombie spawn.

Much Love to you Fun.. I havent been on in a while but I do have much love for all of you guys. Fun Ex... I dont know what to say, your the man. There are some crazy memories associated with this server. I will see you guys on the new server soon.

2 Questions: 1 - Where can we donate to the new server?

2 - Did I read correctly that the world save is gone? I would've loved to have a copy of that. Does anyone have an old copy of the file.

3 - Much Love to Fun again..!!
