How Violence and Video Games are not correlated
The Columbine High School Massacre had its 11 anniversary on April 20 2010 which resulted in the death of 12 students (Lawrence 2); was started by two teenage boys Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold. While Columbine was not the first school or the largest related shooting it is arguably the most impactful. When the smoke had cleared and the crisis was over many people started to look for the cause of such a crime. An investigation led by the police revealed the two boys were seriously disturbed posting threats of Violence on the Internet, and one of the boys Harris took pills for depression and anger problems (Lawrence 17). However one item in particular got the interest of the media who were looking for any scrap of information to put in the reports for the nightly news, as Columbine had taken on a life of its own in the news media. It was revealed to the media by Police (Lawrence 22) that both of the boys played regularly a video game called Doom a violent first person shooter that takes place in Hell (Giantbomb 2). This game along with a violent arcade game Mortal Kombat led to the view in much of America and the world that video games and violent acts are interconnected and linked (Ferguson 2). I am writing this paper because I have evidence and academic backing how Violence and Video should not and can not be correlated together; an important thing to note is that correlation does not equal causation.
An important thing to note that many media outlets and newspapers fail to mention is that video games with violence may be a source to pit aggression and violence that might be used in the real world. Jerald Block M.D professor of Oregon Health and Sciences University (Houghton 6), suggested in an interview he gave recently that not only are video games helpful in building skills like coordination; they offer a haven for people who are mentally unstable and inherently aggressive (Houghton 3). Block was intrigued by the Columbine killings and the correlation with violent video games, “ … the Columbine diaries and legal records became publicly available I had even played some of the same games. So I was curious and began reading the data…It was consuming, compelling, and disturbing reading” (Houghton 12). Block suggested much of the data produced by studies including some of the most famous from researchers like Bushman and Anderson have extremely weak Correlation (or how strongly two suggested events are relevant to one another) sources, and some of the sources of research mentioned showed no correlation at all (Houghton 14-19). Shortly before the massacre Harris and Kleabold were caught stealing computer tools and software and sentenced by a judge. Also limited were the boys computer time and playing the video game Doom. Block argues that like a drug or alcohol withdraw (Houghton 24), the effect of not being able to direct their aggression at the game caused the two boys to break and go on the shooting spree (Houghton 20). By directing their anger and aggression at outlets like Video games researchers have proven that in moderation this helps greatly with people who are mentally unstable or feel overwhelmed or depressed. In one of the diaries after his computer was confiscated Kleabold wrote the world would be better if it were like the world of Doom (Doom takes place in Hell), many researchers suggested that Kleabold sounded Suicidal and desperate, Block had a different idea. “He sounds enraged (Harris), by taking away his computer his power over the one thing he thought he could control in his life was taken away (Harris 32).
