I built a PC

Yep, after about 6 months of research I finally decided to order the parts and just get it done.
This was the first PC I ever built and I was quite surprised how easy it was. I pretty much learned everything I needed to know from Geno's thread and Tested's How to video. The only problem I ran into was installing the OS as I installed the 32 bit version of widows instead of the 64 bit.

The Good

  • Its damn fast, the fastest PC I've ever used in fact.
  • Its nice to finally be able to play PC games without them looking like slide shows.
  • I finally have a place to store all my data that isn't an external drive

The Bad

  • MSI includes a special technology on their motherboards called O.C Genie which is meant to take a measure of your system and automatically overclock your CPU and memory, this automatically gives me a BSoD so I'm going to have to learn to overclock for reals.
  • I order all my parts from Germany as the prices in Ireland for PC parts are ridiculous, part of this order was a keyboard and to my surprise it was in German (facepalm). So all the basic keys are the same i.e A-Z, 1-0 (had to switch the y and z keys around) but the symbols and function keys are all fucked up.

Specs

  • Motherboard: MSI P55 GD65
  • CPU / Cooler: Intel Core i5 760, Corsair H50
  • Memory:  G.Skill Ripjaws 4 GB DDR3
  • HDD: 1TB + 2 TB Samsung F3
  • Graphics: 2x Sparkle GTX 470
  • Displays: 22" LG Flatron LED Monitor
  • Speakers: 2.1 Logitech X-230
  • Keyboard: Keysonic 8001 (possibly the worst keyboard I've ever used)
  • Mouse: Razer Deathadder
  • Case: Lian Li PC-7FN
  • PSU: Coolermaster 850W
  • OS: Windows 7

Eh I don't care what it looks like in regards to the H70. I won't be using a windowed case in the future. Whichever cools better is what I prefer. Would love to push to a 4.0.

When I sell my 8800GTS G92, 150 Raptor and a pair of 5h V2s I'll probably use that money towards the new case. That is more important, my old case is beat up pretty badly.

@HitmanAgent47:  That's neat, I think my PSU has the low flat modular cables like the ones used on Gav47's PSU and it's this that will make the most difference in routing them behind the mobo tray, I think the cables are longer on modular PSUs too to help with this, at least I hope so. This is the PSU I went for:

It's the OCZ Fatali1ty 750w Semi modular which means some of the cables are attached and the rest I can add myself.
*** I posted this last night, came back to the thread and it wasn't here, so I posted again. This morning both posts were here! 1 has been deleted.

@Gav47: I guess sli isn't supported yet, my 3dmark score is like 4171 on a gtx 460 1gb overclocked to it's limits. However your unengine score is like way higher than mine using 16X aniostropic filtering and 4X AA which I only scored 688 with all that anti aliasing.

You could try the FFXIV benchmark, i'm sure it will be extreme high for the score and stuff. http://www.finalfantasyxiv.com/media/benchmark/na/

There is also a lost planet 2 benchmark, I can only get a B overall score in it, looks fantastic since it makes full use of DX11.

@HitmanAgent47:
Here is my 3DMark score. Its not great as there seems to be no scaling for SLi, heres a overclocked single GPU score for comparison, if you look at the histogram of results you can see the average score is around the 4000 mark.

It seems to be a commonissue.

@HitmanAgent47: Lol. A man of influence indeed.

I should have said something about the cable management, I've just upgraded my case and would love to have my cables managed as neatly as you have managed yours, the cables on my PSU just aren't long enough to track around the back of the case and over the top of the motherboard but I have a new PSU in the post which should be much better. Fingers crossed.

@Gav47: thanks for posting that. I am still using stock cooling on my i7 because I wasn't sure of the H70 could fit in my case and the H50 leaks and destroys mobos. Of course that rarely happens but it does happen. I was looking at some big noctua cooler, it would of took all the room in my antec 900 and block everything. I was worried that the H70 with it's push and pull config will block my side fan which looks great on my pc case.

Then you posted the H60, without it's ugly hockey puck like design or h50's ugly design. It doesn't take that much space, the tubes looks like it's well configured to not snap by coolit's design. Also it looks very easy to install. I know what my next cpu cooler will be. The word corsair is sort of big and ugly since I have a side window, nothing electrical tape can't cover. I don't have to worry about how much space it takes now. I still hope it cools very well with only one fan on the radiator. Thanks for posting that, when I complained, someone listened and finally designed a cpu cooler that I wanted.

Looks great for a first build. Hell, looks great, period. I wish I wasn't too lazy to bother with cable management.

That's an awesome build. Some great  hardware choices for a first build, can't really fault it. Well done.

@Subject2Change:  I kinda broke my rule of never buying a first generation electronic product with the H50 but it looks like the H60 is just around the corner. I'd recommend waiting for it.

Eh don't feel like investing 100 bucks atm. I really need a new case as well. It may become a project for me once I get my tax refund or some time away from work so i can invest the time to rebuild my system. Trying to get the most out of my Q9550 for a while longer...

350 dollar project...ya ill wait a bit.

Hmmm that's a bit discouraging. O wells, i'll save the money and research it a bit more in the future.

Nice looking build. How do you like the Corsair H50 so far? I was considering swapping my Coolermaster V8 to a liquid cooler to quiet my PC down a bit. And good call on the case. Nice cable management options.

Overall impressive for a first build. And <3 LG monitor, I run Dual 23" LG LCDs.

Can you post your 3dmark 11 score? I sort of want to know how two gtx 470 would score on that program.

Yay become a pro SC2 player and run it on low at over 200 FPS like I do (Just kidding run it on ultra).

Also, a Cooler Master Silent Pro PSU.  Good choice, I have one too and it definitely is quite and it's held up great for the year I've had it so far.

Yeah dude; even with just 4GB DDR3, 64-bit is probably worth it. 32 is only for net surfers :<

Now you get to play some older games and crank them up by using mods or whatever resources that enter your mind. Have fun, I'm sure it's going to be a nice run.
