2010: Games I've Played

Wow... I've played alot of games this year, especially when you consider the amount of DLC that I've played through for each title. Examples included Red Dead's Undead Redemption and all the additional Mass Effect 2 content.

List items

  • Finished the main campaign just after the new year. A great game that I'm STILL playing now (still looking for collectibles and playing through user created levels).

  • Started playing ODST before vacation, and I was almost finished (on the final escort mission) before I got my PS3 and my LBP obsession started. I finished this off in 2010 after finishing the LBP main campaign. Wow, notice that I'm referencing Little Big Planet more than ODST in this description, so I guess that (doesn't) say much about ODST.

  • Finally (and almost accidentally) finished the campaign. :)

DLC Packs: Who knows :)

  • Wow, three weeks into 2010 and I've finished 3 games (as well as playing quite a bit of LBP:PSP as well!). Uncharted 1 is a fantastic game that still stands out magnificently after 3 years. I have a few complaints about it -- primary that the combat isn't as fun as one would hope, with just-one-too-many waves of enemies thrown at you -- but the story, characters, exploration and polish are so amazing that it only brings the game down from magnificent to great.

It's not a bad thing to be _just_ a great game. I'm pumped to see what Uncharted 2 brings to the table.

  • I was expecting how over the top amazing this game was, and it delivered. The story is even better than the first, the cut-scene-but-not-cut-scene sections are amazing, and the actual shooting is fun and has "weight" now.

There are a few things that I didn't like about it: I had a PS3 crash towards the end of the game, there would be times that I died and it pushed me to the next section (that I hadn't reached yet), and some exploration puzzles that were not obvious (hint: "Go through the window" -- I'd love to, thank you very much, but it's been 20 minutes and I still don't see the way to go)

It's only because the game is so polished that it makes these few issues stand out. It's definitely deserving of 2009's "Game of the Year" title as there is nothing on the market quite like it.

  • UPDATED 09/14/2010: Completed Overlord, Shadow Broker and Firewalker DLCs. The former two (Overlord and Shadow Broker) are fantastic expansions to a great game, although they are a bit expensive for the 1.5-2 hours of entertainment they provide per pack.

And then we come to Mass Effect 2, which takes everything from Mass Effect 1 and makes it even better. I can't say anything bad about it, other than the story didn't seem as grandiose as Mass Effect 1.

...Actually, I played through it twice and started over from scratch the second time. I loved it just as much the second time. Awesome game. If I had to chose from any of the above games (incl. Uncharted 2) as the best game I've played so far this year, the honor would go to ME2.

  • I was worried about Heavy Rain when I first started to play it. The voice acting leaves something to be desired, and the demo seems to feature some of the worst instances of it. By the end of the game, you're so immersed in the story that all of its bigger faults -- the aforementioned voice acting, unwieldy walking controls (!) and occasionally frustrating camera angles -- all fall to the side.

  • DLC Packs: Specifically General Knoxx expansion. Awesome stuff, played through twice (on both playthrough 1 & 2)

  • Yes, I've finished it twice before, but leading up to Halo Reach I ended up playing Halo 3 /again/.

  • Another blast from the past, the availability of Portal on Mac OS X made me play through it a second time. We do what we must because we can.

  • I really liked the story of Alan Wake, and I can't wait to see the future DLC for this. The only downside was that the gameplay started to show its threads towards the end of the campaign, but the story and setting worked very very well.

DLC Packs: The Signal, The Writer

  • Honestly, I think the game was overrated, but I'm not a fan of westerns to begin with. I think I'm the only one in the world that didn't like the final missions in this.

DLC Packs: Undead Nightmare

  • I was a little disappointed by Infamous after hearing so many good things about it. Open world exploration is done better by so many other games (Assassin's Creed comes to mind), and regardless of what I've read, I didn't find the combat to be stellar either.

Regardless, I really enjoyed the story and am looking forward to see how they perfect the title with Infamous 2 next year.

  • After finishing the ME2 DLC packs, I wanted to keep working reducing some of the games I've bought over the last few months I haven't had a chance to play. Limbo is next on the list and another great Summer of Arcade title. The atmosphere and puzzles are great, but I found the lack of a story and conclusion a bit disappointing, especially when I compare it to Braid. Nonetheless, it's a fantastic little title.

  • After playing through Alan Wake's two DLC packs (and getting a job!), I needed to head back and play some Halo Reach, and it's fantastic. It's the highpoint in the campaign -- unlike previous Halo games, there are no levels that stand out as sucking. The only downside is that it misses the big epic finale that Halo 1-3 have.

Overall, this rates very high on my list.

  • I loved Fallout 3. Even though it has a lot of issues (technically), I loved the story. I have most achievements, and loved every piece of DLC.

New Vegas, on the other hand, has just a passable story, a setting I could care less about, is completely unbalanced (e.g. if you fight the Legion, the last boss is harder than anything you have ever faced in the game up to that point and you'll probably need to level up just to beat him), is buggier than ever, and is not especially fun.
