IE9 VS Chrome 10 Adoption

Tomorrow FireFox 4 will be released. It will be the last of the three major browsers to update. Two weeks ago Chrome 10 came out, last week IE9 came out. Let's take a look at the adoption rates for each of those on Giant Bomb.

One week after release, 60+% is Chrome 10.
One week after release, 60+% is Chrome 10.
Hey that's looking pretty promising. Not bad for the biggest change being the options menu. Note that there are two minor versions of 10 showing up and three minor versions of 9 showing up. Let's see how IE did.

One week after release, 8% is IE9.
One week after release, 8% is IE9.
More people are using IE7 than IE9? And over three quarters are using IE8? Perhaps you guys don't know that you get ROUNDED CORNERS in IE9?

Let's see how FireFox 4 does when it comes out this week. Any predictions? Better or worse adoption vs Chrome?

If you ignore the pie and look at the tables on the left it might be better. I'm doing a week over week comparison for the browsers. The week prior to vs the week after release.

The fact that some people are still using IE 5 and 6 (even if it is a very small minority) is very distressing to me.

IE9 is currently messed up on Giant Bomb (almost makes it impossible to post because you can't read it), so I've just abandoned it. Although like ZP says, I find it really difficult to fathom those pie charts.

Chrome auto-updates silently whenever it's closed. Major version changes in IE need to be downloaded and installed.

Plus, anyone on a school or work computer is probably going to visit this site on an outdated version of IE, or if they're lucky, an outdated version of Firefox.

I've been doing comparisons between IE8 and Chrome on Whiskey Sites to see the difference.

No rounded corners in IE makes me sad.

Probably won't be installing IE9 for a while.

Does Windows Update push IE9 out to computers so people have to upgrade from IE8?

Thanks, I forgot to mention the autoupdate thing. The problem right now is that IE isn't even updated through the system update yet. :(

@gbrading: I'm using IE9 right now, and I haven't had any issue posting on GB or any of the other Whiskey sites.

And I'm guessing part of the reason for IE7 and 8 are still being widely used is because of the OS requirements for 9, though I'd like to think anyone browsing these sites would've upgrade to Windows 7 (or even Vista) by now.

@hack745: Good point, I'll try to remember to include the OS in the recap next week.

Unless they're smart enough to put a portable version of Chrome or FireFox on their USB drives. That's what I used on college computers.
Back in school I ran Halo off my memory stick once. Had most of the school wondering how I pulled off the crazy shit I did on school PCs back in the day, I was like some sort of computer wizard.
I got in trouble when I used a IP changer though... that was pushing it.

So are those people using a fake user agent, or is there actually a version with that number?

One thing to keep in mind is that IE9 requires at least Windows Vista. Windows XP is still in active use, so it will be some time before IE8 goes away. Even IE5.5 continues to hang onto life somehow. :(

Yeah, that's a spoofed user agent, probably from back when Microsoft mandated the use of Internet Explorer for most of their sites. It's apparently been around for at least a couple years.

Not sure if I'll be switching to FF4 from 3 yet. The RC still has some interface issues I don't like and some of my preferred extensions haven't been updated.

I'm just surprised that people use Internet Explorer even at the behest of a loaded gun.

Firefox 4 broke a couple of my addons. Not sure what the old deafualt font was i want to set it back. I don't like the green spinning circle when it loads a page wondering if that changes with the persona?
