I can't imagine watching the Kessler "statement" and actually thinking it's anything but a bit.
Granted, they had no idea how to land the bit after the speech was over but, hey. Improv is a bitch.
I think you've hit it squarely on the head here. They had a great setup, but needed to have the exit in place as well and then let them go nuts in between. Like having Kessler do the PAX challenge and storming off, rather than having Jeff say it and then dismissing him. But whatever, most people enjoyed it as is, so I'd say they know their audience well and the bit was a success.
The argument that PUBG has had a bigger impact on the industry seems to fly in the face of past years where a person couldn't use the affect a game had on people outside the room as a reason for something to win. I have no problem with it winning, but it felt like there was a double standard in place for giving it an easy path to victory.
When I was growing up we would wear poppies here in the US on Memorial Day. Granted I'm fairly old (compared to most on this site) and my father was a member of the VFW so we were much more observant about that sort of thing.
