Top 10 Games of 2009

List items

  • As someone who wasn’t overly impressed with the first Uncharted game, I really wasn’t expecting much from the sequel. Fortunately, Uncharted 2 refines the shooting and platforming elements that needed some improvement, while retaining the great writing and memorable characters from the original game. Ultimately though, what makes it so great is how it manages to blend all of these features into some of the best action set pieces I’ve ever experienced in a game. Nathan Drake's latest adventure is essentially a giant roller coaster ride that had be smiling ear-to-ear throughout, something no other game managed to do for me this year, and that's why it's my favorite game of 2009.

  • While it comes off as a simple expansion for Halo 3, ODST is so much more below the surface. This is the first Halo game where I really cared about the characters, and it features a well-crafted story that borrows heavily from film noir era detective films. It sounds like a strange formula for a Halo game, but it works amazingly well here, and creates a vulnerable atmosphere that finally adds some depth to this once superficial series. Additionally, the new Firefight mode is hands down the most fun I’ve had in a co-op game since Gears of War 2’s Horde mode from last year.

  • Modern Warfare 2 is disappointing in the sense that it takes the grounded campaign formula from the last game and brings it to Michael Bay levels of stupidity. Having said that, the multiplayer features have been improved in virtually every way, and honestly, that’s what everyone really wanted. Playing through Spec Ops mode with a friend will go down as one of my favorite gaming moments of this year, and unlocking all the crazy new killstreaks, perks, and weapons in the competitive multiplayer suite have me just as addicted to Call of Duty as I was two years ago.
