My Favorite Fighting Game Characters
There are hundreds of fighting games out there, and each has a whole host of characters. Like everyone else, I've got my favorites in each game. Here is a list of my favorites in the genre.

My favorite Soulcalibur character since the day I started playing Soulcalibur II. I love his intricate fighting style and his backstory and increasingly unstable personality. I was disappointed with how much he changed from III to IV, but the style grew on me. His new Soulcalibur V moveset is, despite its shortcomings, still very fluid and fun to use.

Lee is my favorite character in Tekken. He's got style and personality to spare and has an intricate play style that's fun to use. Also, his eccentric personality is getting funnier and more likeable with each release. I love the newer innovations in his fighting style and look forward to seeing how Namco further refines his style in future Tekken releases. Excellent!

I liked seeing Tsubaki and Makoto as playable characters and how their characters were developed in the story mode. I liked Tsubaki, in particular. She fit in very well and has a fun style to use. Probably my new favorite character to play as in the game.

Talim is a sweet, innocent young woman who till tear you apart with a pair of bladed tonfas. I know a lot of people don't like Talim, but face it, it's hilarious to see Talim knock some of the larger fighters, like Astaroth, around.

She's fun to play as, and her character is quite quirky, funny, and charming. A cute, bad-a, and overall cool character.

Dude's got issues, but he's still pretty awesome. A lot of fun to play as, and I enjoyed watching the development of his character throughout the story modes. He actually became a really cool character later on.

One of the most badass good guys in the genre. Siegfried was formerly possessed by the cursed sword Soul Edge but managed to break free and seeks to atone for his sins. Wielding with ease a great sword that's about the same size as him, Siegfried is a guy you definitely don't want against you.

In recent games, Baek has been overshadowed by Hwoarong, but Baek's awesomeness far outshines his pupil's in my opinion. His more damaging combos can be a bit tricky to set up, but when they land, asses tend to be kicked.

Xianghua is one of the most memorable characters in the Soul Calibur series. Her intricate fighting style is always fun and I love her design. Her quirky/awesome personality and good looks definitely don't work against her, either. After failing with everyone else again and again, Xianghua was finally the first one I managed to beat Night Terror with. Not even the embodiment of evil itself can stand against the wrath of this small Chinese woman.

I didn't like Leixia at first, as I always liked Xianghua and was loathe to see her replaced. I gave her a chance, however, and I've grown to really like the character. Leixia is a blast to play as, and her 2p costume is nicely reminiscent of some of Xianghua's old costumes.

The original fireball throwing, spin kicking karate guy. Ryu is the most powerful hobo on the planet, traveling the world with nothing but the clothes on his back, challenging fighters around the world on his quest to become a "true martial artist", whatever that means. The point being, Ryu is probably the most iconic fighting game character in history and he definitely deserves a spot on this list.

I already liked her as a pallet swap for Xiaoyu in Tekken 4, and I was glad to see her return as her own character in Tekken Tag 2. I've always loved Xiaoyu, but Miharu just might inch a bit above her in my favorites. I like her quirkier take on Xiaoyu's moveset.

I still haven't got to play Street Fighter 3, but in Super Street Fighter 4, I had the pleasure of using a few SF3 characters. My favorite of these was Ibuki. Jumping around, throwing kunai, kicking people in the face, and that neck-breaker move make Ibuki one of my favorite Street Fighters.

C'mon, a boxing dinosaur? That's hardcore. I loved him in the older games, but his return in Tekken Tag 2 is what brings him so high up on the list. I like his style, which is an adapted version of Roger Jr's style... But let's not forget that Roger Jr's style was an adaption of Alex's in the first place. I love his victory dance as well, makes me chuckle every time.

Awesome costumes and outrageous movesets are the name of the game for this Robin Hood-esque cyborg/ninja/thief/whatever he is. I love him in Tekken, but prefer his Soul Calibur appearances due to his awesome voice and lines in said series.

Although she wasn't one of my top favorites, I always liked Taki. I didn't like that they were replacing her with this supposed bubbly, teenage ninja here. Like Leixia, though, I gave her a chance and she quickly became one of my favorites. To all the Taki fans out there who don't want to try SoulCalibur V due to her removal: Natsu is a worthy heir, give her a chance.

Another example of the unexpected power of small Asian women. Xiaoyu's always been one of my favorites from Tekken.

I love playing as Bruce. He hits like a truck, but even better is that he hits like a truck quickly. A lot of the heavy-hitters in fighting games will move slowly and it can sometimes be difficult to land their heavy-damage attacks... Not so with Bruce.

How could Kazuya not make the cut? I'm honestly not very good as Kazuya, but that doesn't stop him from being awesome.

Eileen is my favorite Virtua Fighter character. Cute Chinese girl using monkey kung fu? I'm sold. I wish Virtua Fighter did more to develop their characters and story, but it's still a great series with pretty interesting characters.

Definitely a cooler character than you'd think. She's pretty hilarious in the story mode, if a bit over-the-top (though I suppose that's probably the point).

It's funny, he looks like a villain at first glance, especially using his soul eater ability, but he's actually the main hero. He's an interesting character, and actually probably the most normal person in the BlazBlue storyline. His reactions to all the madness around him are priceless. XD

The hard-hitting heavyweight favorite of the Tekken series. So he's not very graceful or sophisticated, you've got to admit that nailing an opponent with Phoenix Smasher is pretty freaking cool.

Definitely not what I was expecting when I saw him before I got the game. Much less whimsical (in fact, you could call him a callous arse) than I was expecting, but I liked how he fit into the game. I guess BlazBlue did need a cold, cool, confident type of villain and this guy fits the bill quite nicely.

Mitsurugi is a veteran fighter of the Soul Calibur series. Who doesn't like this BA samurai?

Like his father, Forrest is a homage to famed martial artist Bruce Lee and packs the punch you'd expect a Bruce Lee homage to. I like Marshall's character more, but Forrest's variation on the style is more to my liking. And he makes a great tag team with Paul.

How can you not love Bang? I mean, come on. The guy's hilarious.

When I finally found out how to play as Thanos in Marvel Super Heroes, Thanos immediately became my main character in said game. Now that I've gotten Marvel vs Capcom 2 on XBox Live, Thanos reigns again. :) It's a shame he didn't get into MVC3.

I always thought his design was cool in the Alpha series, but didn't really play as him until he was included in Street Fighter 4, where he quickly became one of my favorites.

Mental health notwithstanding, D. Dark is a cool design and is a blast to play as. My favorite of the additions to the EX series. Too bad none of them were included in any later titles. :/

Going back and playing the older King of Fighters games again, Athena has taken Kyo's spot as my favorite.

My favorite from the Last Blade series. BA old man with a rocking hat ftw.

Probably my favorite from the World Heroes series. Though Hanzo and Fuuma are awesome too.

I prefer the normal Ogre (Ancient Ogre in TT2) form to True Ogre (just Ogre in TT2), though both are epic. He's a brute powerhouse, not many combos and suffers from a lack of speed, but certainly packs a punch.

Probably my favorite fighting game boxer (unless Alex counts). Classy to the point of being ridiculous, Dudley was a welcome addition to Super Street Fighter 4 for me, as I never got to play as him in Street Fighter 3.

An interesting alternative to putting the Fantastic Four in the game, and I have to say that I prefer it this way. Super-Skrull is a really fun character with some of the coolest looking super attacks to be found.

Probably my favorite Guilty Gear character.

I hated the idea of a person summoning a wolf-spirit (or whatever Ein is) in the middle of the fight in SoulCalibur. But like the rest, Zwei surprised me as an utterly unique and likable character that's a load of fun to play as.

I've never played Resident Evil before. It seems pretty interesting, I'll probably try it eventually. Wesker, though, is a blast to play as in MVC 3. I love his teleport abilities and Shadow Dance super, or whatever it's called.

One of my favorite Soulcalibur characters. Her style is quite unique and fun to use. I wish her character was more fleshed out and her personality more defined, but she's awesome regardless.

Don't get me wrong here, I always liked Sophitia and Cassandra, but it didn't take long for me to decide that I preferred Sophie's kids to either of the sisters. Patroklos' style is based on Sophitia's, but has been modified considerably to have a more aggressive (and less feminine) feel to it. I liked his character in the storyline and how he developed from a "holy warrior" that went around on witch hunts killing innocent people into a real hero.

Don't let the pretty face and the "sweet Japanese girl" routine fool you, Aoi performs some of the most brutal throws and counters in the genre. A strong defense is a fantastic offense in Aoi's case. She's my second favorite Virtua Fighter, behind Eileen.

A complete maniac, true, but also a very cool character.

I liked her when she was introduced in Soulcalibur III, but her voice was too grating in IV for me to really like her. Thankfully, she isn't painful to listen to in V and her moveset was nicely touched up, making her one of my favorites in the latest Soulcalibur.

Her Last Blade design is cool, but she was even more awesome in the Capcom vs SNK crossovers.

Bruce Lee... I mean Marshall Law... is another of my favorites in Tekken.

A cool character from Guilty Gear.

Asuka is really cool, a worthy successor to Jun. I love her throws and punishing counter moves. Her Aikido-styled moveset is second only to Aoi, in my opinion.

A bit deranged, but that's part of what makes him funny and awesome.

Originally nothing more than a palette swap for Ryu, Ken has long since become his own character and even though his moveset is similar, it has it's own edge. Ken's aggressive and fast, making him one of the more fun characters to play as and one of the harder ones to fight.

I think it's pretty obvious that Viola is Amy with a unique style and revamped design. Regardless of whether she is or not, I vastly prefer her to Amy and she has actually become one of my favorites (something I never thought I would say of Amy, who a wasn't a big fan of in SoulCalibur IV). Her style is very unique and fun to use, and I like her backstory. I look forward to seeing her story in DLC or in SoulCalibur VI.

A funny and cute character from King of Fighters, and one of my favorite to play as.

Probably the most dynamic character (as far as the storyline goes) that Street Fighter ever had. I liked his personality and appearance change as the EX series progressed. I really wish Capcom would bring him back.

Like a lot of the new SoulCalibur V characters, I didn't like Pyrrah at first. She seemed to be ridiculously unwilling to fight to be in a fighting game, and quite frankly I thought she would fall flat in comparison to Sophitia and Cassandra (whom she replaces). I was proven wrong on both accounts. She actually has a good reason to act as she does. That, and I ended up preferring her to Sophie and Cass, overall.

My favorite Dragon Ball Z villain, hands down. Frieza may be a bit of a sadistic jerk, but he's fun to play and downright hilarious at the same time.

What a bizarre, yet cool, character.

Cool addition to the KOF roster. I hope she gets reintroduced in one of the current or next gen games to come.

I'd like to see another Neo Geo Battle Coliseum-like game that brings a lot of SNK's characters back into one game.

Cassandra, to me, was a lot more fun to play than her sister Sophitia. She was quicker, had more personality, and was a show-off (that's one of my favorite traits in a fighting game character, so long as they aren't obnoxious show-offs).

She was one of my favorites in Soulcalibur II, but in III and IV she got progressively less interesting in my opinion. By the time Soulcalibur V was in development, I think Namco made the right decision in retiring Taki gracefully. Definitely a cool cahracter, and for the Taki fans who don't like Natsu, Taki is still alive in the storyline and might return in Soulcalibur VI.

I'll admit, I don't use Tager too much. He's just too slow. I like the character, all the same.

Dan is freaking hilarious. Over-the-top lines, moves, and taunts make Dan one of my favorites, despite an underwhelming skillset. Though, really, he's not that bad. You just can't try to play as him like he's Ryu or Ken.

In a game dominated by weapon-wielding fighters, this brave chef dives into the fray unarmed. She gets some BA points for that, in my book. And she's just a cool character.

I love how crazy Guilty Gear is. This girl is fighting with a giant anchor.

Sir Arthur was such a brilliant addition to Marvel vs Capcom 3, I love it. I've never played Ghosts & Goblins, but I loved having an old-school adventure game styled character in the game. He's a little quirky and can take a while to get used to playing as, but overall he's one of my top favorites in said game.

I keep thinking of obscurefan's list in which he says "We in America often wonder how the rest of the world views us, and if this military flat topped stereotype is how they see us... then kick ass!" and just keep laughing. It's true, though.

The -second- most awesome samurai in gaming, in my opinion, behind Soul Calibur's Heishiro Mitsurugi.

Iron Man's always been one of my favorite super heroes, and I like his portrayal in the recent Iron Man and Avengers movies. I have to say, Proton Cannon is even cooler looking in MVC3, and Iron Avenger is one of my favorite moves. Very stylish and cool character, overall.

Cap's always been well made in Capcom's games. I particularly like the overhaul given to him in MVC3.

Thor's one of my favorite super heroes, and it was cool to see him make the roster in MVC3.

It's kind of funny, I never liked Jean Grey in really anything before. I thought she was annoying in the movies and in the old cartoon I watched as a kid, but in MVC3 she's actually one of my favorites. It can be kind of crazy trying to keep her alive what with her low health and all, but she's a blast to play as and can unleash some pretty cool-looking supers.

Almost completely for his "Ah! Lord Frieza!" move where he tricks the opponent into thinking Frieza is behind them, and then blasts them with a barrage a energy blasts. Also for his epic alien mustache, ability to recover health, and funny personality.

Gambit has always been one of my favorite X-Men and has also become one of my favorite characters in MVC2.

A little bizarre, I'll admit it took a while but she did grow on me. Pretty cool character. I love her intro quote in TTT2 "Hi, I'm Alisa. Now you must die."

That's right, haters. Necrid RULES. He could have borrowed a few less moves, true, and an intelligible voice (or at least subtitles) wouldn't hurt, but Necrid didn't need those to be awesome. He just was.

I never played as her much in Marvel Super Heroes, but in MVC2, she's become one of my favorites.

I never played the game he originated in. In fact, the only time I've played as him or even seen him was in SVC Chaos: SNK vs Capcom... Which wasn't even really that good of a game. It was still pretty fun, though. And I thought Goenitz was awesome in it. Cheap, sure. But awesome.

I never really gave Jun much of a chance in my earlier years of playing Tekken. Recently, though, (as I've started to play as Asuka) Jun has really grown on me.

Just read this: "Skullomania was once a salesman named Saburo Nishikoyama. Saburo's boss was never pleased with his progress as a salesman. Because Saburo was constantly under pressure, he volunteered to dress up and perform like a superhero at a carnival devoted to the top customers in his department store. Saburo's boss was amused. Saburo hoped this would be chance to prove himself. Relishing the attention he received while dressed as a superhero, Saburo quit his job and devoted his life to fighting crime. Skullomania was born." That ridiculous, yet hilarious, backstory combined with his ridiculous, yet hilarious, moveset/personality makes him an unforgettable character.

Luke was the main character I played as in Star Wars: Masters of Teräs Käsi. The game was pretty clunky, but there was still fun to be had. And it had some pretty advanced systems for its time. Like super attacks in a 3D fighting game. Isn't Soul Calibur V just about the only to do so since then?

Also from Masters of Teräs Käsi. Jodo Kast was fun to play as, and I kind of preferred playing as him to Boba Fett because he was different and I like the character.

But Boba was still pretty BA to play as. I mean, he's BOBA FETT. XD

He's basically just a big jerk that bullies people around. Not sure why he's so awesome despite this, but he is.

War Machine was a lot of fun in MvC 2. Like Iron Man, but with MISSLES! XD
