Farewell, Ryan Davis

It's really hard to find the right words to say in this situation. I first became familiar with Ryan and his work while he was still at Gamespot, and ended up following him here to Giant Bomb following the great forum exodus. Consequently, his contributions to the site have been a small part of my life over the past five years. I can't say I really know him, though from the Bombcasts and following him on Twitter, I felt like I got a good picture of him. It's strange to think of him as having passed away; I'm only a couple of years younger than he is, and when something like this happens, it always reinforces the fact that we'll all be following along at some point.

But rather than dwell on all of that, I'd like to remember the few times I've been able to interact with Ryan directly.

The most direct time was a chance encounter at PAX Prime several years ago. It was the morning after the Bombcast panel and I was headed into the convention center when I saw Ryan moving along the same path. So I introduced myself and we had a quick chat. Nothing particularly major, but as it has unfortunately turned out to be my one and only chance to talk with him, I'm glad I took the opportunity when I had the chance.

The second, less direct interaction (really, barely an interaction at all) came through Twitter. Ryan had started a goofy game where people tweeted him ridiculous concepts for Seinfeld episodes set against the backdrop of the Occupy Wall Street protest. He ended up retweeting the one I submitted. Again, nothing special (though I did manage to avoid his itchy blocking finger, so there's that). Really, Ryan's Twitter account was one of the most consistently entertaining feeds I've followed. He was a man that seemed very well aware of his audience, even when he donned hummingbird masks or related his experiences at a sleep clinic.

And the third interaction, really more just me getting a reaction out of him, was when Patrick opened the mailbag I sent in. As Patrick read my letter, in which I offered up Romance of the Three Kingdoms to any of the guys that wanted it (yes, that was me that sent it), Ryan, behind the camera, chimed in with a "Not it!" That gave me a good chuckle.

This is a lot of rambling and talking mostly about nothing, so I suppose I should cut it off here before I drag on for too long. Rest in peace, Ryan. You've been a major part of this site from the very start, and if the response on Giant Bomb, Twitter and elsewhere is any indication, you've touched a lot of people in a lot of ways, big and small.

I hope that wherever you are, they have D-Box seats.

Nicely said man.

Ryan's passion for life was pretty amazingly infectious. Even the smallest of interactions with him felt big y'now?

I posted this on facebook...

I still can't believe Ryan Davis passed away. It may sound stupid to have emotions for a dude I've never met, but let me give you a little insight. He hosted my favorite podcast of all time. It ran for 3 hours every Tuesday. On top of all that Giantbomb.com, the site he is from, put out LOADS of content a week. So as far as this site is concerned, I watched and listened to this dude for around 6 to 8 hours a WEEK! And now he is just gone...The worst part though, is that he was on his honeymoon. I feel so bad for his wife. I couldn't imagine.

If I tagged you in this post, then you know what's up! You guys are a part of the Giantbomb family. R.I.P. Ryan Davis.

Here is a classic Ryan Davis clip of him accidentally getting some stoner dudes in trouble at a hotel they were all staying at. Classic stuff man. Gonna miss this dude.

I only started visiting the site late last year but I was immediately excited about everything these guys were doing. Ever since I've been excited for the next PAX Prime and the hope that I would bump into them all at some point and express my thanks for their work and perhaps a hand shake. I still retain that hope but I'm saddened that I will never be able to meet Ryan Davis.

Well put, I liked the D-box comment haha. It's interesting how you can get to know someone through just their internet presence alone. We all lost a friend today.

To be honest this is the first death that has bummed me out since my father died .... because Ryan like my father did , was the type of person that you would enjoy listening to jokes and just make you smile. He was a great guy and is unfortunate that´Il never meet him.

@aetheldod: ditto only for me it was my grandmother in 2009. I always feel glum when tragedies happen but I never really verge on actually breaking down crying. I verged on breaking down several times through the day. I ended up falling asleep and taking a brief nap earlier and there was a brief 2-3 minutes where I forgot what happened when I woke up. That's when it really hit me that this was as real as it gets.

I've taken the time to read almost every rambling blog posted tonight. Hell, if @red12b hadn't convinsed me to dig into my long forgotten liquor stash, I'd probably write one myself... but thank science for spell check. Instead, I feel like I've repeated myself a dozen times in a dozen threads. Here's something I haven't written yet:

Ryan! You've read my e-mails thrice! Though I imagine you weren't getting many in 2008, I still appreciate it. Oh! I'm sorry I wrote in suggesting that you be replaced with a more-visually-appealing lady, I never meant it, thanks for taking it in stride.Thank you for answering a ridiculous question about which way you hang your toilet paper: I'll never forget your words of wisdom: "I'm a hang over guy" cue Jeff: "I'll say!" And what was my 3rd e-mail? I don't even remember, something about Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts. Anyway, there exists, on record, Ryan reading my full name. One last thing. RYAN! MI stands for MICHIGAN! Not Missourii! Requestat in pace, you magnificent bastard.

@hailinel: I know we don't always see eye to eye, friend Hailinel, but I just wanted you to know that I really liked that. Reinforced to me that Ryan was as happy and benevolent with people he barely knew as he was with his best friends. It's hard, really hard, to imagine the site without him, and reading all these stories about how beloved he was is actually helping, even as it brings tears to my eyes.

Feels like the entire gaming community has lost a friend. Rest in peace, Ryan.
