Frustating gameplay and Sony

Day 5 in a daily blog about a gaming journalist.

So I was playing Fairytale Fights yesterday, and it was an alright game, albeit a little repetitive, until I got to Chapter 6: The most annoying and stupid level ever. In terms of the actual level itself, it's fairly straightfoward, with my epic gripe with it being that they just repeat the assets. For example, there's this massive cat that swipes at the floor and you have to get through at the right time. Pretty simple platforming item, but here's the problem PlayLogic: IF YOU KEEP PUTTING MILLIONS OF THOSE CATS IN THE LEVEL IT GETS REPETITIVE. For a game praised with having "amazing creativity" they really use the same stuff a lot.

Now I normally don't rage at games, and I might've been able to keep going with the game even with that utter piece of laziness, but when you get to the boss is where it really pisses you off. I'm not going to explain it as it's fairly complex and I don't want to spoil the game for those that actually want to play this game, but let's just put it like this: In a normal platforming game, if say the floor you're standing on is going to fall, or a platform is going to close and another one your going to jump on is going to open, you get what we call a "visual cue", in other words something flashes or moves to subconsciously tell you  "Move your goddamn ass before you fall to your doom". In Fairytale Fights in this particular boss, you get no visual cue, which means you have to literally guess or memorize a certain pattern to move up or on in the level. In other words: You die a lot.

Moving on from that rant and other news in my land of videogame journalism, Sony's let us know that we will be receiving their upcoming games in the form of review copies for the PS3

and

PSP, and on top of that, we will be receiving a loan debug unit so we can really preview games quite a while before they are released. So that's actually made me quite happy and made me stop raging at that gripe with the game.

Anyway, time to stop glowing in that happy piece of news and move on to playing some more Fairytale Fights... oh God I hope it gets better.

Bethesda Sues, Interplay Wins

[originally written by me for GamesPoint.]
[original article I wrote can be found here.]

A while ago, Bethesda sent Interplay to court to stop them from selling the original Fallout trilogy and to stop them from producing a Fallout MMO. How did it all work out? Find out in this article.

Bethesda sent Interplay to court asking that it stops marketing and selling the original Fallout trilogy and to hand over the developing rights and any work done so far on the upcoming MMO spin-off of the Fallout franchise, working title’d Project V13.

Today, court documents reveal that the judge has ruled in the favour of Interplay, allowing them permission to continue developing Project V13, and to continue publishing the original Fallout trilogy, seperately and as a trilogy-pack.

There is no word if  Bethesda will appeal against the decision or not. We at GamesPoint will keep you up-to-date if anything happens.

So what do you think? Comment on it, duders.

Monday Equals Paperwork

Day 4 in a gaming journalist's blog

So, today's Monday. As the title states, Monday is the equivalent of a whole heap of paperwork. On a day like this, I generally have to compile and print a weekly game releases list from my various press contacts. This is generally a half an hour long process, but can take up to an hour or two depending on how many games are coming out. As Christmas is coming, less and less titles are being released, so this didn't take so long this week.

I'm working until next Wednesday, which is Christmas Eve Eve. That won't stop me from playing games though.

I'm really like the way Giant Bomb's wiki-ness works. I'm the kind of person that updates the information of a game the second I see an empty game with no information in the database. What's really awesome about it is that it kind of forces you to do a bit of research, which in turn will improve your video game knowledge.

Also, we might've struck a review copy deal with Ubisoft, which means (hopefully) we'll be receiving review copies of all their upcoming games, so I'm really excited about that, too.

I've started playing The Saboteur on the PC and am thoroughly enjoying it. My only gripe with it so far is the number of annoying loading screens it tends to have. I do a mission, then a loading screen, then a short half a minute cutscene, then another loading screen, then walk over there, another loading screen, another cutscene, loading, etc. It's seriously peeing me off.

Other than that, a good Monday. :P

Oh, noez. One hour till Monday!

Day 3 in a daily blog about a gaming journlist.

So here we are, It's 10:58pm and I've got about an hour before I've got till my working week begins. This is something that, unlike most, I can't wait for. It's the time when I can get back into the flow of e-mailing companies, reviewing games, and, of course, playing more games (as if I stop on the weekends!). I just posted two of my reviews on the site on GiantBomb as well, so that gave me something to do for a few minutes.

On a totally random note, I finally and after about 2 hours of non-stop trying to figure it out, managed to make my e-mail address work in Lotus Notes, a program which I find is heaps of fun to use and a whole lot better than the average e-mail client like Outlook Express. Heck, it even runs Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc. documents right in the program, plus it has an Internet Browser right there. It works similar to Mozilla Firefox/Chrome/newer IE where you can open tabs to do different things.

Enough about me blabbering on about what e-mail client I use. We're being told that Tuesday we'll be receiving Alvin & the Chipmonks: The Squeakuel, on the Wii and DS. Oh goody, can't wait. /sarcasm.

Let's wait and see what this week brings in store for us.

Woot for Site coming back

Day 2 in my Gaming Journalism Blog

Well, today's a good day, got a picture of the review copies of Borderlands X360 (my second copy--I already own a copy of it, they sent me another /sigh), and Fairytale Fights, what I spoke about in yesterday's blog.  Also, our site, which yesterday was down, is back up and can be found at http://www.gamespoint.net .

I also set up my mini-"office" of sorts, so I can play my games while on the same monitor which I can check my e-mails on, etc. Comes in really handy as you can make notes while you're reviewing a title. I'm at the point where I need a proper program that I can play my games through a capture card, and record at times for videos for the site. If anyone has a good program that would be greatly appreciated.

I've got all this week to play through Fairytale Fights, which I am enjoying but I feel it's quite repetitive. If anyone is up for some co-op so I can review that part of the game as well (there's no games on PSN everytime I search), let me know by sending me a PM here on Giant Bomb.

Stay tuned for more exciting information tomorrow (as if anyone actually reads this blog), where I'll talk about my first experiences with the PC version of Saboteur. In the meantime, please take a look at our site, and sign up on our forums if you want to see a gaming community flourish with more and more people (sif...) you can find it  here

Ahh, the joys of being a gaming journalist

Today I was put on 2K Games' distribution list (W00T for Bioshock 2! ) and received a copy of Fairytale Fights for the PS3 for lulz as well. Going to start playing that. When I looked through the manual I was surprised at the pages filled up with weapons, from blunt to sharp and everything in between!

Tomorrow (today really, but it's 6:20AM and I've not gone to sleep yet), it'll be time to actually start playing through Fairytale Fights and sometime next week to write the review of it (assuming I can finish it or get somewhat through it so I know what the basic premise of the game is). It looks fun, even though I'm not too much of a fun of hack-'n'-slash games, the platforming aspect of the game looks fun.

Also got my hands on The Saboteur, Dragon Age: ORIGINS, and Borderlands (PC) from the good ole' friends at Gamer's Gate. What sucks is that our review sites down (stupid host, can't wait to move to GoDaddy). It's been down for over a day now and it's really peeing me off. HURRY UP AND BRING IT BACK UP!!

Anyway, lets leave the ranting for another day. Cheers.
