W.I.H.O.G.(Why I Hate Online Gaming): Episode 1 People Are Great!

EPISODE I: People Are Great!

My History

Can I just say people are great?  I am not much for online gaming, not anymore.  I used to play online a lot, I started back with the release of that god awful PS2 Network Adaptor that screwed on to the back of my fat PS2.  I have played many games online though I started there with Tribes Aerial Assault then moved to PC with Aliens Vs Predator 2 and then over to the Xbox which is where I really got into it.  I played Halo, Mech Assault, Burnout 3, Star Wars Battlefront 2, TimeSplitters Future Perfect and I'm sure many others.  After that I moved on to the 360, I started out strong, I made it to the top of the leaderboards in Saints Row and I spent plenty of time on Gears of War and Halo 3 but it wore thin.  I'm not sure what happened, I think a lot of people like to say online gamers are jerks, that might have had something to do with it.  I'm paying for the service to play online though, I hate to have a significant portion of it be rendered useless to me because of them.

The Experiment

I've decided I'm not going to let these jerks ruin my good time, not any longer. I'm going to go and play, try to, online at least once a week and come back here and report any outstanding interactions I have with the community. I'm not going to be biased, if I run into somebody who is great and helps me out with a new game then I'll be sure to post that. However if I run into a prick I'll be posting that as well. Oh and you forfeit your privacy when you're a prick so I'll be posting gamertags and profile information as well anything else I manage to gather during my time with them. I hope you all enjoy this little process as much I will.

Result I: Saturday, December 29th 2009 between 11:00pm and 12:00am

This was before I realized I was going to do this little experiment here, but this is sort of my inspiration.  I was playing some friendly games of Rainbow Six Vegas 2 with a good friend of mine online, one of the few games I do continue to play online from time to time.  We managed to find a game of two on two, we were in party chat so we didn't hear what they were saying, but that was irrelevant during the match anyway.  We played a full game, won and then started a second game, a rematch.  It was very even the entire time, the first game we won by only one kill.  The second game was probably about 75% complete when I was booted from the game, then my friend was booted.

A few seconds later my friend told me he recieved a message from xTTxSRTLOV3Rx(no I'm not making that up).  He described the message to me, the man called us idiots and cheaters.  I don't usually take much from stuff like this typically ignore it and start playing offline, but not tonight.  I thought to myself, "what is the one thing most jerks have in common?"  It didn't take long, "homophobia!"  The following is an exchange between myself, HatKing and the offender xTTxSRTLOV3Rx.
(I responded only in text, while he responded in voice messages)

HatKing:

U R TOO CUTE

xTTxSRTLOV3Rx:

Hey guess what?  Why don't you go camp and then suck my fuckstick, you little camping fucking bitch.  That is all you and your little gay shotgun whore niger lover did.  So suck my fucking hairy sack and then go camp on someone else's house, bitch.

HatKing:

U CAN'T DENY OUR LOVE

xTTxSRTLOV3Rx:

Man, are you lucky I don't feel like driving from Iowa to Illinois to kill your stupid ass, or else I would.  You stupid fucking faggot, stop sending me messages because I'm not going to sit here and read your faggy, queer ass, bitch, homo messages, you fucking homo.

HatKing:

U R SO DARK AND I LOVE IT

He hasn't responded yet, but I'm assuming in the morning I'll have some more racist, homophobic messages waiting in my inbox.  Thank you for reading and if anybody has some tips or recommendations at all please let me know.  As of right now I'm thinking Borderlands will be the next game I'm going to play online, I actually want to play that one online and I think it has potential for some positive results.

Truely, you are the king of hats.

Posted by AlexB

You handled it in the right way I'd say.  He was pretty awesome fitting a gay slur 5 times into the same sentence lol. Oh kids on XBL you amuse me.

Edited by HatKing
@Gunner:
Why thank you! :D
@AlexB:
I'm going to try to find a way to rig my headset output to my mic so I can record this on my computer.  I'd like in the future episodes for people to be able to hear the exchanges taking place for themselves.
Posted by eroticfishcake

From glancing at his profile I thought he was pretty camp rather ironically.

This is why I don't subscribe to Live. I'm not going to pay to have asshat little kids, who shouldn't even be playing these game, mind you, berate me racial/sexual/idealistic hate crap. And it, along with a general apathy towards the notion and a lack of time, is why I don't really play online games too often, on any platform.

The last game I pumped a significant amount of multiplayer time into was Counter-Strike, and it has/had the exact same problem. You do good, and people tell you off. Sometimes, they accuse you of hacking, whether they mean it or not.

Now, I kind of have the opposite problem, but it's still equally as annoying. Now I always feel like I'm probably not very good at the game, and rather than put up with being told that by whoever I'm playing with, I'd rather stick with a single player game with a great story. It's just that there's such a huge difference in skill level between me and someone who has the time to spend days upon days of practice time.

Ah, but I've gone off on a tangent... Whatever, this seems like a cool experiment. It'd make for an interesting web series, if you had the ability to record when it happens. Then again, since most of these really good moments can strike at any time, that might be difficult.

Posted by guiseppe

I recently did something similar on my blog. Although not as detailed. I just started a "blacklist" of people who are complete idiots with a name and shame element. So this is great!

Posted by iam3green

lol at this, i can't wait to see some more. this sounds like an interesting "experiment" that u are making. a lot of peopel on xbox live are ass holes that are 12 year olds creaming into the mic.

You should try Modern Warfare 2. If you're lucky like me, when you join a lobby you already have people swearing at each other. Half your work is done for you :D

This is a pretty cool idea. Sorry this time it wasn't the greatest. :p

@ozzdog12:
Yes, it is one of my favorite movies.  Funny though it was the avatar I made when I created this account a year and a half ago when the site started and now I'm afraid it is attached to my personality and I'm afraid to change it.  Think of it as my face, it'd be like getting plastic surgery.
@AndrewB:
Yes, believe me I understand.  I don't know how great I'll do jumping from game to game not being able to spend much time getting good at them.  Also I'm thinking about trying to rig up something, at least some way of recording messages that have been sent to me.  I guess I could look into getting some video/audio capture software and then I could just have the voice output through the TV... but I've never done anything like that before.
@Dark_Jon:
Ah yes Modern Warfare 2 does seem like an obvious next step.  I would very much like to go to that at some point.  I actually have not played the game yet and would like to.  I'm sure I'll get to it.

Sorry I didn't respond to everybody, I tried to answer all the questions.  Thanks again to everybody who read this!  It is getting far more attention than I thought it would and that means a lot to me.  I'll make sure, as long as I'm getting this sort of feedback, that I keep this series up.  :)

it seems like there is some sort of sign outside of the entrance to xbox live that says "you must be this much of a douche bag to enter.." im just glad i was able to sneak in while the operator was being attacked by the douchbags themselves...
Posted by Ravenousrattler

This is pretty much the reason i don't use a headset unless in private chat

 I always thought it was amusing and appropriate that in a game called Modern Warfare, it is common to hear several gamers from different countries swear at each other over the internet.

@HatKing:

Yeah, the internet's known for being hostile. Are you familiar with the Xbox Live Gamer Spotlight? A few months ago, Wombat from the website cheapassgamer.com was featured on the dashboard, which posted his gamertag and some other random info. This lead to a large amount of gamers spamming his inbox, even though he never met any of these people before. I recommend listening the audio here, to get a sense on what kind of messages he received from COMPLETE STRANGERS! o.O

Wow. That podcast was sad, but true. When online, play with friends or prepare to be insulted. I joined my first online borderlands game and was insulted within 5 seconds, and booted after 10. The party had not yet left the lobby.

HatKing, your experiment will probably only result in disappointment, but i presume you already know that.

I think I've only received a nasty message once back when I used to play online a lot. I've probably received more "GG" or similar messages than hate messages. I have heard a lot of shit over the mics though, which is why I don't normally wear one anymore.

I look forward to episode 2 of this blog.

@Apathylad: I always wondered if those spotlighted gamers got tons of spam and hate. That was depressing. Why would anyone want to be spotlighted after hearing that? I imagine it's the same for people who are the "one" in 1 vs 100. I hope Microsoft bans some of those people. That's ridiculous.

Every one should spam his in box that would be vengeance Giant Bomb community unite

Well you have to do it nicely so you don't turn into those other assholes. Only send him nice messages like "I love you".
Posted by Time_Lord
@Dethfish77:
Or just random symbols like € signs I gave up playing online due to the amount of stupid ass holes on live.
Posted by Yummylee

Lmao! Plenty of enjoyment with this read 8). I may have to steal this excellent idea...the ps3 edition >8D lol oj
Posted by JB16

Dude this is a pretty good idea lol. After being called a "gay 'n' word" for the 607456th time I decided about a month ago that I would probably stop paing for xbox live after this year. Thank you for making this blog and showing me I made the right decision.
Posted by CptBedlam

That is why I only play with friends.

Posted by Alphawolfy

This is a great idea, be sure to do more of these. It's too bad none of my friends (from school) have Xbox Live (most don't even have 360's), so I am forced to play with a lot of random people. Maybe I'm a bit lucky, but I don't meet too many assholes online.

Although I remember this one time in Halo 3... it was 5 on 5, then 4 of my teammates quit, leaving me. 2 of the other team quit too, so it was 1 on 3. I put up a good fight IMO, but lost in the end. After the game, I receive a message with one of the guys swearing at me, even though he won... I answered, "Thanks for the compliment," and he didn't reply.  :P

Posted by RetroIce4

Trolls on Xbox Live. OH HELL NAW! That guys character looks like a tool.

Posted by CaptainTightPants

Bravo, i am now following you.  =]

Edited by Crono

I just mute everyone usually, at least on Xbox live.  I play a lot of TF2 and usually don't run into anyone that is as bad as the people I meet on Xbox Live.  The worst on the PC I have ever met are the people that play bad music, "funny" sound clips or quotes from movies/shows that are supposed to be amusing.  I just mute them.

I like playing against other people in games too much to quit just because some people are eager to demonstrate just how retarded they are.  Thanks to mute I don't have to worry about these things.

Also, I never listened to the CAGcast before, but they sound a lot like bad Woody Allen impressionists XD

Posted by GunstarRed

this is amusing but.....

I used to reply with silly messages back to people that sent long, ranty, hateful messages but it detracted from time I could be actually enjoying the game... it's pretty amusing at first but there is a point youre just kind of encouraging it.

Posted by ZeForgotten

You handle people like that kinda like I do.
Though I actually do use the mic and go "oh you're so cute aren't you?" .. or something like that, but in that annoying talking-to-a-dog kind of voice.
It's pretty awesome.

I actually had someone promising me that he would drive all the way to my place and kill me.
Jokes on him when he finally hits the big pond between us since he was somewhere in the states and I'm in Europe and I doubt that little Mr. Loser-living-in-parents-basement would be able to afford a trip to Europe just like that.

Posted by DukesT3

Thankfully on the PS3 not everyone has a headset so the gay slurs are cut to a minimum when playing online even though once in a while "man stop being a faggot!" insult shows its face every now and then. People who are still homophobic is pretty hilarious though. Sad reality...

Posted by HatKing
@Alphawolfy:
Yeah mostly I play with people I know in real life, but I only have a couple friends who actually play online so that doesn't leave much open outside the co-op games.
@JB16:
What I'm hoping to take away from this is that the online community isn't all bad and that there is still reason to pay for this service with these people.  I hate to see jerks drive anybody to cancel a service.
@Abyssfull:
Is it weird that I'd expect a more mature audience on the PS3?  I mean I don't own one but the PS3 doesn't seem to attract as many children as the 360.  Either way I'd like to see how that online community works.
@Apathylad:
Thanks for that!  I really enjoyed listening to that.  They are very right, it becomes less funny when you actually hear the people send you death threats.

Thank you everybody for all the feedback and I'll keep this up.  I'm pretty sure I'll be doing Borderlands next so you can look forward to that.  I'm also going to try to figure out a way to record the online banter.  I don't have any video capture equipment and I've never looked into anything like that, so it'll be a while before I get anything crazy like that setup, but I'll keep everybody posted if I do.
Posted by HatKing
@ZeForgotten:
Ah lucky you.  Sadly I live on the same land mass as many of these idiots so there death threats hold a little more water, that is until I realize they only know the state I live in and unless they plan to murder everybody in Illinois I'll probably be okay.
Posted by ZeForgotten
@HatKing: So that's why you guys have all those school shootings over there!
People who are not sure who's behind the Gamertag and they just wanna make sure they get the right guy!
How foolish was I! :P

'crickets' .. wait, too soon?
I'm soooo sorry, that wasn't funny.. at all.
No way.
How's the weather?
Posted by HatKing
@ZeForgotten:
Oh no please don't start that rumor!  The media would love to have a scapegoat for any act of violence and they would love it even more if it was placed on video games.
Posted by ZeForgotten
@HatKing: Here's hoping the media knows nothing about Giantbomb!
Even though the media knows about Epileptic Gaming and one of the hosts on that show mentioned Giantbomb..
Fuck.... What have I done?!
Posted by teh_destroyer

You did that the real mans way, good job. I enjoy playing Halo3 and World at War online for the most part. Let the kids play there Rumble Pit so those actually looking for a challenge can have a good time in Lone Wolves.

Posted by Dr_Feelgood38

Is it weird that I don't have bad experiences like this on Live? I was in a FFA match in MW2 last night where three guys were talking shit to one other guy and he was firing back. I butted in and asked if we could just play the game and they said something along the lines of  "Feelgood lives up to his name" and they stopped for the most part. Most of the time I'll hear other people arguing or swearing at each other but everyone's cool to me. The only time someone got pissed at me was when I was playing on Rust with the SPAS 12 (making it a bit too easy to get kills) and he asked if I would stop using it, so I obliged and we were cool. I like Live.

Posted by ahriman22

When I come across idiots like that I simply turn my verbose switch on and muted them. Or I blast music into my mic as revenge.

Posted by natetodamax

His reactions were way to extreme, but you weren't making it better by sending those childish responses, even if it was just an experiment.

Posted by pallorwag

This is why I don't play multiplayer games seriously anymore. I've met a few people online that I can actually call friend. So I'll just stick with my action adventures and modding thank you.

Posted by Solarus

That podcast is pretty harsh, but does a perfect job of summarizing the XBox LIVE community.

I'm looking forward to seeing what happens with you and that guy in the future though :P One time as a joke, before I even logged into LIVE, I wrote a cheesy love poem. When I started playing, upon hearing the first person who started bad-mouthing, I handed the head-set to my friend and had him read it out in the most pretentious voice possible. Hilarity ensued.

Posted by teh_destroyer

I will send him a message saying that I want to make I want to give birth to his babies.
