I think you're overstating the gameplay impact somewhat. Over the course of my season there were 3 events that prompted me for DLC, hardly a substantial amount that affected my standings on the FedEx leaderboard in any meaningful way. One of those events was even the last event in the season, after the FedEx cup.
The last few games do have the analog swing controls, and you can also switch to the more traditional 3-click method in the options. I'd recommend tracking down a copy of Tiger Woods 10 for cheap, as the gameplay is largely the same, and it was prior to EA's "project 10 dollar" initiative, meaning that you can play it online at no additional cost if you find it used.
I don't know if you guys are seeing a resurgence of community members playing MNC due to the patch and recent DLC news, but Shacknews is still up for some friendly battles if you guys can organize a team.
