Game of The Year 2014 Users Choice

These are my top 10 games of 2014.

List items

  • Bayonetta 2 was by far the most fun I had with a game all year. The combat is satisfying and incredibly deep. The game offers a lot to learn once you've completed it the first time. It's actually quite fun going back and trying to get a pure platinum run. There's literally never a dull moment in Bayonetta 2, which wasn't really the case with the first game. The original Bayonetta was already pretty great, this one fine tunes and makes the experience even better. A lot of people won't get to play this because it's on the Wii U only, but that's a damn good reason to get one. Either way, I'm glad this game exists!

  • It seems this one flew by everyone's radar, but it's my favourite platformer on the Wii U. I didn't think I'd like anything more than Super Mario 3D World, but man, Tropical Freeze was amazing. The level design is fantastic, the music is amazing (thank you David Wise), and the K levels are challenging, but fair. There's a ton of content if you want to go for 100%.

  • Having never owned a PS3, I missed out on The Last of Us. I was glad that Sony released a remastered version of the game. What an incredible game it is. Although the gameplay doesn't really do anything special, it's the scenarios your put into, along with the setting/story and characters that really pull you in. That's not to say the game design is passable either, it's not, but it really isn't a game that's pushing the Third Person Shooter genre, and it doesn't have to. Everything works as you would expect it to, and I never had to think twice about the controls/how to play. The game was an incredible journey. I can easily see why people loved this game last year.

  • After Mario Kart 7, I didn't think Nintendo could do much to improve on the formula. Mario Kart 8 is incredibly fun. The anti-gravity plays a big role in the game, the DLC is well done and priced right, and the online play really pushes the game forward. There's never a dull moment playing Mario Kart 8 and the course design is some of my favourite. It's the best version of Mario Kart by far, it's gorgeous and Nintendo really deservers the recognition with this one.

  • I had to put Super Smash Bros for 3DS/Wii U on this list. It's Smash Bros and I love Smash Bros. It's pretty much what you'd expect from Smash but in HD. There's a ton of characters, NFC character support with Amiibos, and as per usual with Sakurai games, a ton of content, unlockables, things to do. It's the definitive version of Smash Bros. It's a complete, love package to Nintendo fans.

  • I love Assassin's Creed, but that series hasn't made any meaningful improvements since Brotherhood. I'm glad Shadow of Mordor exists, because it's a natural evolution of what that type of game should be. It's very much it's own thing and it's the first open world game where I feel like I can actually do what I want when I want, and progress throughout the game however I want. The story isn't very good, but the game is fun, the upgrades are meaningful (and awesome) and the nemesis system is probably the most interesting gameplay feature in years. I went in expecting nothing, and came out quite surprised.

  • This game was hard as FUCK. I won't lie, I rage quit a little more than halfway through, but it's a great platformer. If you love platformers and want a challenging, frustrating 'WHAT THE FUCK? REALLY?' type of game then definitely check this out :).

  • This game came out of nowhere but I'm glad it exists. The Toad sections of Super Mario 3D World were really charming and creative, so it's not surprising Nintendo decided to those into it's own game. Captain Toad offers a ton of great levels, with objectives and collectables throughout, at a budget price. It's definitely worth picking up if you liked those levels in Super Mario 3D World.

  • Having never been a fan of the Metal Gear Solid franchise, I went into this fairly open minded. I'm glad I did, as the one thing that's always bothered me about the older games was the gameplay simply wasn't very fun. I've always been terrible at stealth games, and I never found Metal Gear Solid to have accessible controls, to allow someone like me to have fun with it. Ground Zeroes changes that, and makes it far easier to play. I'm quite excited for Metal Gear Solid V after playing Ground Zeroes, the open world concept sounds great.

  • This retro throwback 'yet still it's own game' thing was quite good. The music, level design, bosses, everything was great about this game. It's no surprise considering it comes from people who used to work at WayForward. It's great and I'm looking forward to more from Yacht Club Games.
