Blockbuster Canada liquidation sales ahoy!

The situation, as if you didn't already know

Yikes. Just got back from a Blockbuster Canada that was liquidating everything in their store at 30% off, which of course is because of their recent closure annoucement. Seems like not every store is closing down, but many of them are. For more information regarding the closing, you can find it here:

In fact, the last links on the page have the full list of stores that are closing or staying open (as of their marked respective last updated dates):

The Haul

I think I did good, brand new copy of Marvel vs. Capcom 3 (original price $59.99), and a used rental copy of Vanquish that seems to be in good condition (original used price $34.99). After the 30% off discount and 13% of Ontario HST sales taxes added, it came to $75 bucks for both, which I think I'm happy with. Mind you, all prices are in Canada space bucks. It was an absolute madhouse in there with everything at 30% off, I saw these 2 hippy looking girls walk away with what looked like the entire TV run of Nip/Tuck. I probably would have been interested buying some movies, except I'm in this funny place of not owning a Blu-ray player (so I won't buy blu-rays), yet no desire to buy DVD's because I'd rather buy the better quality of the Blu-rays... except I don't own a Blu-ray player. It's a vicious unfulfillable cycle, I guess.

What could have been, but was never meant to be

At one point, I had the 2 games I bought plus a rental copy of Devil May Cry 4, brand new copy of Dead Rising 2 (orig. $39.99), a used copy of Super Street Fighter 4 (at $24.99), and a brand new Halo Reach Limited box (orig. $55.99), all of which was eligible for 30% off. I quickly came to my senses for most of that though, like when I quickly realized I don't really like playing Halo, and if I wanted to play the singleplayer I'd just borrow that off... anybody. I had the exact same feeling when I almost grabbed Call of Duty: Black Ops off the shelf, as well.

Shortly after that, I realized "what the hell, I have 4 Capcom games in my hands", which then led me to think that if I wanted to buy Devil May Cry 4, I could probably buy it sub-$10 if I wanted to get it used from something like Craigslist. I also then remembered right after, "oh right, Dead Rising's gameplay is pretty much bullshit even though I enjoyed Case Zero because it was so much smaller", so I put that back on the shelf. I'm maybe wishing I bought that, but I think I'll be okay without it when I weight it financially. Then I also remembered that Super Street Fighter 4 is getting that arcade patch applied to it soon, so even after this used copy gets a discount it will cost about $20, which doesn't make sense to buy if the arcade patch is going to cost $15, because then I might as well buy the game brand new when that games out. I also almost picked up Crysis 2 off the shelf, but I would rather buy that for PC so I didn't bother.

I almost even bought a brand new black Wii system bundle (original price was $169.99) that had Wii Sports, Wii Sports Resort, and a Wii remote plus new in the box after 30% discount and sales tax, it would have worked out to around $135 total. But then I quickly realized that would have been the dumbest impulse buy ever.

Other games I came close to buying but put back on the shelf for one reason or the other, being still too expensive or not being interested in it just enough (or a weighed combination of both factors):
  • Fight Night Champion
  • HAWX 2
  • WWE All-Stars (almost bought it just for the Macho Man)
  • Bionic Commando ($6 brand new lolz)
  • Medal of Honor ($15 after discount)
  • Fable 3
  • Need For Speed Hot Pursuit
  • Force Unleashed 2
  • Fallout New Vegas
  • Singularity
  • Lego Rock Band
  • Alpha Protocol (might be better to get for PC)
  • Final Fantasy 13
  • Bioshock 2 (was only $15, but meh... I may go back and get this)
  • Dark Void ($10)

In closing...

Anyways, I know I'm not the only one who walked out of a Blockbuster store with a little bit of a score. What did you guys manage to grab? Anyone quick enough on the draw to maybe grab some other hardware or even an entire game system? I was on the hunt for Xbox Live points cards, but those got snatched up really quick I imagine, as the entire shelf of them were completely gone. Share your hauls in the comments/posts.

You missed out on BioShock 2.

God dammit. I can't get to the city for 3 days and the nearby one isn't closing.

Posted by HS21

Of course the 2 Blockbusters in my area are staying open.

Posted by LiquidS

Was hoping the few BB close to me were closing but alas, they live to fight another day at least. Hope to get in early when they eventually close though.

My Blockbuster went out, but unfortunately I was too late to get the great new releases.

I'm glad you bought Vanquish. That game deserves more recognition.

@Empirepaintball: With the recent excitement surrounding Bioshock Infinite, I just might have to go back to the store and grab it. I'm really on the fence about it. I care little for the multiplayer which I don't think is the main draw anyways, but I don't know. I enjoyed the first Bioshock for it's story hooks and didn't like the gameplay a whole ton, so I'm not 100% sold that Bioshock 2's story will be enough. But then again, at sub-$15 I guess I really can't go wrong, can I?

There are two in my town, with one closing and the other staying open. I grabbed Red Faction: Guerrila, new, for $13, so that was cool. Funny enough, I also got Muramasa: The Demon Blade for $15 at the store that was staying open. I was totally unaware that any of this was happening - caught me by surprise, especially since I just found out today that my local Rogers Video (which I frequent much more) is closing down as well. Feels like a video-store apocalypse over here.

@nintendoeats: @HS21: @LiquidS
I'd keep an eye on the first link I posted with all the crazy links to the legal stuff, as it continues to be updated as the receivership/closing of Blockbuster Canada continues.

If I'm not mistaken, more stores should be closing as the receivership continues on through it's phases of liquidation, as Blockbuster Canada uses all funds from the liquidation of assets to pay off debts, as ordered from the Court of Justice of Canada. So basically my guess is that this is only a "phase one" of stores closing. As the liquidation funds get actualized into real dollars and cents, phase two will likely roll out to estimate further debt in approximate dollar value that will be owed to the receivership.

So basically the skinny is hold on to your Canadian moose hunting caps, more stores may close, at possibly even DEEPER discounts than the 30% I received, which is still pretty good for brand new sealed products (approx. $20 off a $60 retail product before sales tax).

On a side note, I almost was tempted to ask if I could walk out with a promotional life-size cardboard cutout for L.A. Noire of Cole Phelps with a small backdrop, but I'm not crazy enough to just have that sit somewhere in my house doing nothing.

@heatDrive88: Ungh, you should have gotten it. Then I would have taken it off you. You're in Toronto aren't you? Son of a bee sting Heat Drive. I still haven't played that game but I've always wanted a cardboard cut out of a man standing over my bed watching me as I sleep with those unblinking eyes.

Wait what?

I got Bayonetta for 7 bucks and the whole run of The Wire for around 55 when mine close in January.

@TheFreeMan: I've seen a couple Rogers Video stores go down in my town as well, but I missed out on those unfortunately. I also forgot, I wanted to grab Red Faction Guerrilla at that price point too, except I went against it because again, I have a friend who owns the game which I could easily borrow it from. I also figured that may be something I could buy off Steam for PC for even cheaper.

I forgot what this thread was about and I don't give half a damn.

HST is a fucking wallet killer.

The Blockbuster in my town will never close because it's full of old people who don't know what the fuck Netflix is. Even so, they're previously viewed prices are decent. Although the last time I was in there was well over three years ago.

Posted by xyzygy

Can't wait to go check out some Blockbusters. I love games that not many people do so I think there'll be a nice selection there for me.

Posted by heatDrive88
@xyzygy: You should still definitely go as soon as possible if you want the widest selection. The store I went to just started it's liquidation today, and I didn't get to the store until about 9:45pm, and left it at about 10:15pm, and the store was pretty packed and selection on games was easily half-gone, with almost all brand new copies being sold and hardware + points cards being completely gone.

@heatDrive88: do I need to be a member and have a card if I just want to buy their stuff? I haven't been in a blockbuster in years.
Edited by Natedogg2

The Blockbuster in my town closed earlier this year (this is in Colorado). Every movie, game, DVD, etc in the store was $5. It was pretty crazy. I wasn't able to make it there right away (I had to work right as the doors were opening at noon), but I went and picked up quite a few DVDs and Blu-Rays for cheap. From the sound of my friend, a lot of people hit the game section as soon as the doors opened, so by the time I got there later that night, there were really no games left (well, at least no decent games).

God damn the North Vancouver ones are still all open!

Nope. At least not that I'm aware of at all for any sort of purchases. I have an account, but I also haven't been to a Blockbuster in a grand number of years either.

Those still sound kind of expensive. I went to a blockbuster clearout and got Quake 4 for 50 cents
