Lilly Looking Through is a very short adventure game that has you solving puzzles through a few great looking locales. I can't say much about the story or characters because not much is revealed. The ending comes out of nowhere, presumably if this is successful enough, more episodes will be made. Until then, this is just a small taste of what could be a good adventure game.

Trials and Tribulations is a solid entry in the Ace Attorney series with another set of interesting characters and cases. Gameplay is exactly the same with the standard investigation segments followed by the court trial which is always filled with unforeseen twists and turns.

The first half of Broken Age defiantly shows signs of a great adventure game, but I'm waiting until the entire game is out to play through it again in it's entirety.

  • Completed January 26th 2014 (again)

Star Fox still satisfies my on-rails space shooter with animals itch. Plus it has one of the best soundtracks on the SNES.

  • Completed January 27th 2014 (again)

Another year, another Super Metroid playthrough. I do love this game.

  • Completed February 2nd 2014

This is defiantly the best game I've played where you awkwardly control an octopus pretending to be human in a three piece suit. The humour is chuckle worthy at times with most of the laughs coming from the unintentional chaos you are causing while trying to perform simple everyday tasks. Some areas get a bit frustrating, but has since been fixed with a new update.

Jazzpunk mainly consists of walking around while it throws a ton of gags at you, but only a few of them are actually funny. Overall, meh.

  • Completed February 15th 2014 (Multiplayer game)

A 1-on-1 sword fencing game where the objective is for each player to reach the opposite end of the level. In a good match it's a constant tug of war between the two players as they constantly respawn and attempt to stop each other. It's comes across simple at first, but does have a bit of hidden depth to it. Unfortunately there are only four different levels and with it being only 1-on-1 it's more fun to play four player games like Towerfall or Samurai Gunn.

  • Completed February 15th 2014 (Multiplayer game)

You are a Samurai and you have a gun. It's a fast one hit kill four player 2D arena deathmatch game. It's easy to pick up and play but skill is required to consistently do well. Wall-jumping, using the environment effectively, timing your sword strikes and deflecting bullets all play a big part. It lacks any extra modes and has a limited number of levels, but hopefully that gets updated in the future. Overall, it's a very fun local multiplayer game that will have you constantly saying “just one more match”.

It's been a while since Nintendo released a platformer that was challenging almost from the very start. They usually wait until near the end of the game or extra bonus worlds after the main game to start giving you some tough levels, but not in Tropical Freeze. It has a decent number of challenging levels, it looks great and the music is even better with the return of the original Donkey Kong Country composer. Each side-kick character changed the gameplay slightly, but Dixie is by far the has the best ability. It has a 2 player mode, but with the already difficult platforming a second player is really not viable past the first couple islands. The GamePad screen is not used at all in the game, which I don't think needs to be a requirement for all Wii U games, but Rayman Legends proved that it can be used in some fun ways for 2D platformers.

  • Completed March 6th 2014

Dual Destinies is the first Ace Attorney game for the 3DS, and for a visual novel-esque adventure game it uses the 3D pretty well. The bland and boring 2D backgrounds and characters of the previous games now have a lot more life and detail in them. Graphics is the least important thing with these games, but it certainly doesn't hurt. Of course like all other games in the series it has a great set of odd and interesting characters involved in bizarre cases. They added in a new feature during the trials to do with finding peoples true feelings that felt a bit forced, but it did help to spice things up a bit. Overall, it's one of the best Ace Attorney games yet and is a great entry point into the series for newcomers.

The more I play Pikmin 3 the more I love it. I have also unexpectedly put an insane amount of hours into the challenge missions and bingo battle.

Earthbound is one of the greatest RPGs of all time and a personal favourite of mine. It stood out as unique and quirky back in 1995 and it still does today. It takes place in a modern setting where a group of young kids go on a journey to defeat an intergalactic evil entity known as Giygas. It's filled with funny dialog, zany characters, odd enemies and memorable events throughout the lengthy journey.

  • Completed (again) July 2nd 2014

I haven't played Resident Evil 4 since it came out on Gamcube 10 or so years ago. They did a really great job with the new PC HD release and it looks great considering it's age. The story is alright, but the main draw was the gameplay and I feel it still holds up well if you go in expecting a survival horror game and not a third person shooter. One of many standout features of RE4 is the way the enemies react to your gunshots. Before RE4, when you shot an enemy the most feedback you got was a grunt or maybe a bit of blood to indicate you hit them, but RE4 changed that. Now you can shoot weapons out of hands, shoot them in the legs while they are running to cause them to trip and fall or shoot the grenades they are holding to blow them up. RE4 is still a great game filled with many memorable events and this 2nd (or 3rd?) HD-release is the best version yet.

The Wolf Among Us is a gritty neo-noir adventure game where you are investigating a series of murders in a community inhabited by fables. I say adventure game, but Telltale has stripped out almost everything that would define it as a traditional adventure game and is now more of an interactive story with choices, consequences and the occasional fight scene. I love the atmosphere in this game, that combination of a hard-boiled detective story, city streets soaked in neon, and that subtle electronic ambient music.

  • Completed July 10th 2014

Shovel Knight is an indie 2D platformer that is inspired by classic NES games like Mega Man and Castlevania. Fortunately it doesn't purely rely on nostalgia like most other indie 2D platformers from the last few years and really is a good solid game

  • Completed July 12th 2014

Trust fund douchebags get stranded on an island, then get kidnapped by local pirates, then you get away and have to save them...eventually. I say eventually because while your buddies and your stuck up bitch girlfriend are getting the shit kicked out of them and likely raped, you are having tons of fun driving jeeps around the jungle, racing jet ski's, hang gliding and shooting turtles in the face to make belts and stuff. They give you a decent amount of entertaining stuff to do around the island, and when you start to get a bit bored the main story missions are usually pretty fun. I was a bit disappointed when part way through the game the second half of the island becomes available and it ends up just being more of the same jungle scenery. Overall, Far Cry 3 is a good shooter that can get a bit boring if you try and do all the extra stuff, but is better if you pick and choose just a few of them that you find fun.

  • Completed July 13th 2014

Terminator, Robocop, Commando, and Predator. If you love those movies you will love Blood Dragon. This is a love letter to 80s, specifically the R-rated action films and the future-noir setting that Blade Runner pioneered and everyone eventually ripped off. Go play it now, but don't play the side-missions, those are are kind of lame, just play the main story missions, those are kick ass.

  • Completed August 2nd 2014

Finally Broken Sword returns to its roots as a proper classic adventure game instead of the awful mess the last two games have been in the series. George and Nico are on an adventure to track down a stolen painting that leads them all over the place. The background art really looks great, and while the characters look good, the animation is a bit lacking. The puzzles are mostly inventory based and the game has a built in hint system if you get stuck. I really appreciate the developers going the extra step with the character responses to trying every item in your inventory on every person in the game. It rarely gives you a generic “I can't use that on that” response and instead they wrote funny responses for trying to use a cockroach trapped in a matchbox for every single character. Overall, it's another good Kickstarter funded adventure game.

  • Completed August 12th 2014 (got bored on the final mission)

Metal Gear Rising is a hack and slash action game that has some fun parts and a combat system that I just don't find very fun. The story is bad, but in a entertaining bad B-movie type of way. It revolves around getting back brains that were stolen from homeless children for use in military cyborgs (ummmm, OK?). It's pretty short, and the action is constantly interrupted by long cutscenes and conversations over the radio. I'm not really a huge fan of this genre, but I feel that Bayonetta and DmC are better games.
