behind walls. Unlocks behind that wall are dumb though. Really dumb.

But there's one big problem that some developers make sometimes, which is locking contents behind walls on an already lacking game.

Uh, would you guys mind explaining the concept of what this "content wall" is?

So a game is too easy, or something in the game is just plain broken, but you may love the game and want to feel challenged.

Example: Symphony of the Night's enemies did so little damage, it's probably a good idea to play the game ignoring armor on your first run.

For the most part, self imposed restrictions rarely turn out well for games. They're untested balance fixes created by the end-user in order to fix a fundamental flaw with the game. The SotN example is the only one I can think of that actually turned out positive for me. What about you?

Well, Dead Space 1 was probably scarier than any of the RE's, including Remake, and Doom 3, but, nah, still mild sauce.

@bluefalcon: Welllll, having a gun doesn't completely eliminate the fear, and some games do better at keeping the tension levels high, I just thought there was some sorta game I missed out on that did that very well.

So I've played all of these, except Isolation, and none of these really scared me. My kryptonite is(are?) babies and kids. Here are my top...and only scary moments for me in games with weapons.

Small spoilers

1. Silent Hill 3's mannequin room

2. Fear 1. The first level where Alma's creepin' around.

3. Tie between Doom 3 baby monsters and Condemned's Doll factory (apart from the melee combat, Condemned was utterly forgetable).

4. Resident Evil 4's regenerator snickering. Just the first minute of it. After that, I kinda started snickering with him.

Well, thanks for trying guys.

Resident Evil and Silent Hill are really mild for me in the scares department. Anyone know any games where you spend the majority of it with any kind of weapon in your hands, but it's real scurry?

Guys guys guys

The Player's opinion is both.

The Developer's opinion is NOT both.

The Ironman option is a good example of this=

If you side with the "Player", the Player would add an optional "No Permadeath" option.

If you side with the "Developer", there wouldn't be that option, because the best way to play it is with permadeath on. If you turned permadeath off, he'd say you'd be missing out! Crucial point: The developer also believes that players that select an easier setting would actually have less fun than if they selected the optimum difficulty. That's huge. He's basically saying that he knows how you should be having fun better than you do... or at least he thinks so for the majority of the players.

Hey @hencook, have you played the new Wolfenstein yet? I feel it matches all of your criteria pretty well, especially on harder difficulties. That said, there are less types of resources to manage than a Resident Evil game because there's no money management (just Health, Armor and Bullets) but the management required is darn steep.

The Metro series also springs to mind, but may not be actiony enough, depending on how furious a time time you're looking for.

I had no idea a game like Wolfenstein would have resource management, because I thought it'd be another ID kinda run and gun, so I'll look into it, thanks!

Resident Evil 4 and Bioshock Infinite are great games, but you're just rolling in the dough or the have the biggest freaking suitcase by the end of it, and on the more difficult settings, the difficulty isn't the scarcity of your resources, it's the speed in which you die. I wanna be REQUIRED to eat every freaking hotdog out of a trashcan in order to survive. Usually strategy games always have a lot of good money sinks, but action, not so much.

So name something that's

1. Has a lot of action

2. Is a fun time, hard time

3. Always has you strapped for res

*I'd make #4 "Is a video game" but I'd be impressed if you could do otherwise.

@csl316:

Nah, I think I can do all those 10 hit combos at the bottom of the command list. As for you pulling a hit confirm normal into super, we don't really know if you can do it until you've tried, but it's certainly different from a 10 hit tekken combo.
