1. Red Dead Redemption I come to write this, and I do not know where to begin, I mean where do you begin when talking about a game as perfect as Red Dead Redemption. I want to do it justice, I think I shall start off with...Grand Theft Auto is JUST Red Dead Redemption, just not as good. I said it, I don't regret it, everybody's been saying Red Dead Redemption is just Grand Theft Auto, but with horses instead of cars. That insults this game so so so much, its just so much more. Ok so it shares simmilarties, its a sandbox game set in the wild west, and it starts off I do agree much like a GTA game, but as the story goes on, you soon see why its diffrent. SPOILERS START HERE! Ok so your John Marston, a guy who used to be an outlaw, the one that would run into banks with a dollar bag and rob the place. He was in a gang with a bunch of fellow outlaws. He met his girl there too, they left and wanted a normal life. They left and started up a ranch, had a kid, and started to live a life. The govnment then popped round, kidnapped Johns wife and child, and they told him if he wanted to see them alive again, he would have to kill his old gang members. John then goes to the hideout of the old gang, but gets shot and is left near dead, he then is rescued by a local rancher, and brought back up to health. The next part of the game is GTA style. You need help finding your gang members, but before you do that you need to help them. You get involved with alot of interesting stuff and meet loads of colourfull characters. You kill a few of them in the process, even travel to Mexico, help the rebels overthrow the govenment. Throughout of this, you notice a few things that seem out of place, telephones are just starting to appear, power lines and power generators. When you need to track down the last one you go to a proper city with pavement and roads and everything. You get a proper pistol in place of your revolver. You get to go in an automobile. Anyway you with the help of the army search the land fighting natives in process, who say that the people are destroying there land. You find the guy and he warns you that the govenment may let you go once you kill me, but you'll never be free, your an outlaw, they'll find you and use you again. You kill him, and so "Ends" the game. You then are let go and you are ride back to your home and are reunited with your family, credits roll? No, the game keeps going, you are given a string of missions much like the first batch on the ranch at the beggining of the game. You re connect with your son and wife, begin to set up your ranch, begin to start over. Thats when things go wrong.. Your ranch is attacked by the Amercian Army led by the govener who kidnapped your family and ordered you around during the game. They attack and you fight alot off, they kill your uncle during the attack. You make a break for it at the stables, your son and wife get on a horse and ride off, you saying you'll catch up. You watch them go away, turn around and walk towards the barn oor, peek out and see a bunch of soilders there, you take a breath, then step outside. Drawn your gun and it goes into Dead Eye mode which is a feature you use throughout the game, it goes into slow motion and allows you to set up to 6 targets then let go and it will shoot them all. You shoot and kill some, but then the rest shoot you, everywhere, you have blood stained bullet holes all over your body. You stare at them, stumble a touch, heavy breathing, you fall over, and lay in your own blood. The game now switches you to Jack, Johns son, you rush back on your horse to find John dead. It cuts to you and your mum looking over Johns grave stone, with sad music playing ofcourse. It then cuts off to Jack as an young adult, looking over two gravestones, Johns and his mother. Game ends credits role right? Wrong! There is one more mission which involves you tracking down your fathers killer, and killing him, there ends the game. SPOILERS END HERE! Red Dead has one of the best impacts a game has had on me ever, not even Metal Gear Solid had this much of an impact on me, it's a game you think is going to just be a humor filled story fillied with sexual gags and drugs. But its much more. The gameplay is very good, horse control is great and despite most of the land being barren theres alot to see and do. Sidequests and mini games galore, card games, hunting games, horseshoes, arm wrestling, horse wrangling, attacking forts just a ton of crap to do. And everything is done really well. The game's multiplayer is simmilar to GTAIV, it has a free roam mode that is like the free play mode in GTAIV, but you can gain XP in them to gain up levals. Its online is pretty good, but the best part of the game is ofcourse the single player. The game also has a really good piece of downloadable content, Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare. Undead Nightmare is a "What if" where a zombie virus has taken effect and is infecting everybody, so its up to John Marston to save everybody. Its captures the balck and white cheesey horror theme very well, the colour pallet is also diffrent with more greens and yellows. Red Dead Redemption is my Game of the Year 2010 for a reason, its fucking awsome.
2. Heavy Rain I had no idea what I was getting into when I bought the game. I knew nothing really about it, I read a few things but didn't seem my thing. I bought it, I sat down and played it, went to bed, woke up and played it, and finished it. Then I was like...Oh Crap. Aside from one game I shall not mention, there is nothing like Heavy Rain, nothing. Some call it one big quick time event, I partly agree, but I'd call it a fantastic quick time event. I have played both the PS3 controller version and the Playstaion Move edition, both are great, you feel more invoved with the move controllers but the PS3 version makes it easier. If you hadn't alreadcy guessed, the game is essentially a movie at its core. Just a 6-10 hour interative movie, but a darn good one. The plot is very good and the characters are all good. The plot follows a story of 4 characters who all intertwin and eventully join the same story path. Theres plots and twists and one huge crazy twists that may or may not be to you likeing, but you can't deny its awsome. The game has over 10 endings and is a very emotional game, tear worthy. The musical score is excellent as well as the graphics as well as the story as well as the gameplay as well as everything in this game. This is the best PS3 Exlusive of the year, and comes close to being the best game of the year.
3. Call of Duty: Black Ops Call of Duty Black Ops, has been played each weekend since it's release, no other game on this list can say that! Ok so Call of Duty, never played any till this year. I saw Modern Warfare 2 cheap at the beggining of the summer, and man I got hooked. The single player was good, I finished it but just got hooked on the multiplayer, it just hooked me and never let go. I was lucky to get into the game so late, it meant I didn't have to wait long for Black Ops. A lot of people don't like it, say its a game that you just go through explosion after explosion just shooting guys. You know what, whon cares when its this awsome! As before I finished the single player, and it was a much better single player than Modern Warfare 2's, (Although I never understood what the numbers meant :p) thats not what puts the game on this list. It's its multiplayer, I am going to go out and say that this is the best online game ever made. GTAIV comes close, but it just can't compete with all of the stuff online. Theres a ton of modes, customisable features, people playing, just a ton of stuff at your disposal. Before we get into that let me say Zombie modes back from World at War, and its great, it works on a system is you start off in an small room. You kill zombies and get points, which you can use to open doors to venture further and unlock more areas and get more wepons. Theres also this whole top seceret top down shooter which is also pretty decent. But the meat of it is the standard multiplayer, without going into to much detail, it fucking rocks! I just, I'd be here forever talking about it, so to keep it short just know you can customise your weapon to even have your custom made emblem on your gun. There's a new match type series called wager matches where you put up cod points and if you win you get more, which you use to buy upgrades for everything online. Yea good game, who cares if its not an intelligent persons games, it rocks, buy it!
4. Super Mario Galaxy 2 It's Super Mario Galaxy , but with Yoshi...Go Fucking Buy It!
5. Pokémon HeartGold/SoulSilver What What WHAT! Yes I love this game, this is a game which is not on a lot of other peoples list, and I sorta see why, but then I kill those people. Ok lets go back, I loved Pokemon Silver. I had Silver and my sister had Gold, and I played this game to death, its my favorite Pokemon game. The fact that it has what I think is enough Pokemon. I felt this was enough Pokemon to still be plesent, and they still had ideas. They lost there way after this and created a hell of a lot more Pokemon, but here it was just nice and I could name mostly all of them. Now the remake is a very good remake, very rarely do we have a remake that does what a remake should. Essentially be the same game with updated graphics and sound while adding a few extra moments. All of your favorite Pokemon are back and its just good old nostalgia at its best. Plus comon this is double nostalgia as you get to go back to the place where Pokemon Red/Blue takes place to, so yea de ja vu vu vu vu vu out!
6. GoldenEye 007 Straight off the bat I have a confession to make, I'm not that much a fan of the original Goldeneye, ok before you shoot me let me say that because my parents wouldn't let me have it, much like Conkers Bad Fur Day I wasn't allowed it. So by the time I was old enough I didn't really care cause I was on my PS2 playing Timesplitters which was essentially a "Sequel" to Goldeneye. I went back and bought Goldeneye a few years ago and I played it, a few of my friends played multiplayer with me and it was good. But it hasn't aged to well, so it was a good game, but I couldn't see what was so special about it. Never the less I was excited about this game, and I bought it as soon as it came out, I bought the £54 that came with the Golden Classic Controller, and yeah, Goldeneye! Its a great game, anti Wii people (Yes there out there!) call it a shoddy Call of Duty Low Res clone. That is NOT what you get when you play Goldeneye. Ok so the graphic's are not as sharp and polished as a PS3/360 Shooter, who cares when the core game is solid. The game is just good. It isn't so much a remake of the game, there are a few nods to fans of the original, you shoot that guy in the head in the toilet, but after you come out of the bathroom your like...This is new. The game has excelent action sequences and really captures what made the original what it is (Or so I've heard). Yeah Goldeneye, ignore the fact that that blond dude takes away the role of Bond from Piers Brosman, its a fantastic game.
7. Donkey Kong Country Returns A lot of the children today know Donkey Kong from Mario's Party games and Mario's Sport games, if you say Donkey Kong's back in his own game, they'll be like "Dude Donkey Kong has never been in his own game". Its a sad day for Donkey Kong, or so it was, this game came out, and brought Donkey Kong back to his rightfull place as King of the Swingers. Donkey Kong Country Returns goes back to his golden days as a 2D platformer, it's slightly simmilar to Mario's design. But it has a bunch of diffrent stuff that makes it nothing like Mario. Contridictions aside it's all about Cannons, rolling and jumping. I don't need to tell you much about the game as its a platformer, but its a great platformer. The soundtrack is nostalgic and fresh at the same time . The art style on some of the levals are bloody beutifull. The black on orange levals are great. Theres just not alot to say about this game other than the fact its a chanllenging retro style platformer thats great!
8. Professor Layton and the Unwound Future Professor Layton has been around for a while, we were all plesently suprised by his first game, it was a concept that had not been done this well before. But as its the third game with the basically unchanged game mechanics does that make it worse and dull and we've already seen this before? No! Professor Layton and the Lost Future (As it's known in the UK) more of the same, but the "Same" is just great! But what they do is make the puzzles more relevent to whats oing on, in the first game puzles were kinda random and had nothing to do with the story and whats going on. The second one was better but this one is much better in that fact. The puzzles themselves are a great selection of classics and new ones, they have yet to repeat puzzles from past games to so they still have a lot of good ideas. The puzzles also feel fresh, there not like there diggining the bottom of the barrel puzzles either there clever puzzles. The story is very good, clever as always and a lot of mysterys to be solved. There are more cutscenes and dialogue voiced sequences which is as before very stylised. Professor Layton is one of the most likeable characters, I would love to go round thise guys house and have tea. His backstory is developed in this game including how he gets his hat. Simpply put, this needs to be in yor DS Collection if its not already, which it should be!
9. Pac-Man Championship Edition DX One of the oldest video game franchise's that rivals that of even Mario is happily back into the spotlight of modern gaming. I am so happy for Pac-Man, up untill now Pac-Man has been declining, he has been like a winner of a reality TV show like X Factor, who then goes on to do nothing in life and is only famous for that one thing he did. He always likes to bring it up to as there have been countless re-releases of the original Pac-Man. He got back on track last year with Pac-Man Championship Edition, which was great, but now its 2010, and we have Pac-Man Championship Edition...DX! Even before you start playing you already love this game, you close your eyes while the intro music is playing and you picture yourself in a undergound rave where everybody is high and playing Pac-Man, YEAH! It manages to capture the style and sound of the original Pac-Man, just make it tons better. I missed out on his first championship edition so I didn't know what to expect, and boy, Pac-Man's the dude! The concept is simmilar to the old formula, but has a much bigger emphasis on eating ghosts. You start of with one ghost following you, not a ghost that goes randomly around but he/she follows you. Everytime you past a sleeping ghost that ghost will wake up and join the other and follow you. Keep repeating and you will have a shit load of ghosts following you. Then when you think you have enough, you find a super pellet, they turn blue, and you eat them with orgasmic satisfaction. With the more points you collect the faster you go, upping the difficulty. But to make it easier everytime you come really close to a ghost it goes into bullet time, allowing you to plan where your going. If it gets to hot under the collar just activate a bomb which will send all awake ghosts to the center again. With a crap load of modes and stages and speeds and custom features, it's a shit load of Pac-Man. If your looking for your trying to get off drugs, buy Pac-Man :)
10. Age of Zombies Age of Zombie's is fun, at it's purest form it's just a shit load of fun. Your just a dude with a whole range of weapons killing zombies, and thats it. There is a plot but its one of those plots where the developer's know that when playing this game we don't want a plot, we just wanna shoot us some zambie's. So your a dude, you are chasing this scientist dude through time and SPOILER in the end you kill him. Zombie's are there "in thing" at the moment, but this game has a zombie T-Rex, thats just awsome! Yeah so you go through diffrent parts in time covering all of the gerneric basics, you have your preostroric stages to your future stages. Your given a whole load of wepons to kill the zombies, you have a pistol ofcourse thats standard. But you get flamethrowers, uzi's, laser beams rocket launchers etc. Shooting zombies has been done before, but what keeps Age of Zombies way, way ahead of the pack is the game's graphics, humor, and gameplay -- and they're all intertwined! It has a retro feel to it, feels like it could happily be at home on the Sega Genesis. The character models are very detailed from the gansta zombies to the Zombie Ninja's. The pools of blood that splurt out of the enimies is just so so satisfying. Age of Zombie's is the perfect pick up and play game, I have it for the PS3 and thr iPhone. I had it first for the PS3 and I said to myself "I could do with some more AOZ!" The iPhone version is also updated quite frequently with new wepons and hopefully soon a few new ages. Seroiusly, Left 4 Dead ain't got nothing on Age of Zombies!
