I bought an Elgato Game Capture HD!

I've always wanted to record video of me playing games and upload them for the world to see, I never cared what form but I knew I wanted something. I've tried multiple times in the past and I've bought a dazzle, splitter cables the whole lot but I just get so confused and it ends up being way to much hassle. So a few days ago I spent £150 on an Elgato Game Capture HD, I just said fuck it when am I going to have this much disposable income ever again. I've spent a bit with it and I am very happy with it, I had it set up and recorded a small fight on Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown and uploaded it to You-Tube in less than 45 minutes.

I will be doing more tests over the course of today and tomorrow and hey Monday is a bank holiday for us UK people so that day too. I would love some feedback on the footage and the editing and the quality of the footage itself. Right now lets not focus to much on how mediocre I am at Virtua Fighter and how unlucky I am at Resident Evil 4, oh and what other games would you like to see me do? I can record off my PS3 and my Wii.

(To run this on my Mac though I had to have the latest update available, which meant the new OSX, which so far noticed little to no difference other than it has inverted my mouse scroll and I can't change it back, so fuck that.

Oh and I of course will not be flooding the site with videos of me playing a game, if you want to follow me on YouTube the name is Hizangable

@SexyToad: Yes, the TV, console and Mac must be all conected to the device. The device is very small though, about the size of a DS Lite.

You should be able to turn it back in mouse options, unless they removed the option there as well.

If so, then fuck Mountain Lion

Thats the first place I looked, I found no such thing.

The Elgato is great for recording footage, but there is lag in-between the mac and the live stream, so doing a live commentary would be really hard. But it would be fine for doing a post commentary.

Or you just add some latency on your mic too and sync it up best you can.

It's not just that, the lag spikes up and down, sometimes it will be seconds behind while others it will be a good 20 seconds behind.

Or you record audio into Audacity at the same time, and then sync it up later.

Couldn't it just be recorded on your computer? Then be uploaded rather than being a live stream? To avoid lag and be able to use the mic.

No, it has nothing to do with that, it streams over cables, you can do all of this without internet. The only part that involves internet is the uploading when your done, the lag is a well known problem of this device that many reviewers have stated.

Sorry I must have confused you, none of this is livestreamed, this is all me recording me playing a game, editing it then uploading it to youtube. I don't think this is used for live streaming, watch this.

Wish you'd been able to wait longer, news broke just some days ago of the new Hauppauge HD PVR 2 for around the same price and it's got a zero-latency HDMI output port for monitoring. I've got one on order.

@Hizang: Oh, well, you did say Live Stream. So I guess the card itself can't really handle the footage too well if it has lag spikes, or your Mac, whichever actually records the footage. I know it would have to have at least some sort of buffer as it takes the time to actually render the footage, but for that to not be consistent sounds weird.

Record audio after then? That's what plenty of people do.

It was used, not new. I'm plenty happy with this one though, if I get into it I may buy that one but for now I'll try it out.

Hizang I'm not joking when I say try to monetize your YouTubes to offset the cost of that capture card. Anybody paying that kind of cheddar should at least seriously consider it.

I thought about it, but I decided against it, I wouldn't want to do that to people that watch my videos. I hate it when I have to sit through an add on YouTube, I don't want others to feel that pain.

Plus I'm not a YouTube star, I get an average of 100 views and have about 10 subs.

My only problem with that thing is that I won't be able to capture old game footage. That's why I'd rather go with the Hauppauge or whatever that things name is.

That being said, I may just cave and get this anyway.

@DoctorWelch: That does indeed suck, but honestly I can still cover a wide variety of old games. For example PS1/PS2 games on the store, it can do the Wii so all Virtual Console releases. XBLA older games and various compilations, so yes it does suck but I will manage.

@Hizang: Yeah, I'm about to buy one myself, and have been going back and forth between the Black Magic Shuttle, Hauppauge, and Elgato. I can't make a decision. Since the Elgato is the cheapest and it seems like it works really well with current consoles I may just decide to get that one.

Yeah, streaming isn't really a big deal to me. If I got something that supported it that'd be great, but this thing not supporting it really isn't a deal breaker.

If people want a slightly cheaper alternative to the El Gato,

Here is what I use to livestream out on Twitch.tv

It's one of the few PCIe 1x devices out there, so you do have to actually install it, but it decodes into a few formats on the fly, and does real well for live streaming. You can even capture PS3 through HDMI on it, as it has a slightly wonky (in that you can bypass it) implementation of HDCP.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16815100049

It has one HDMI port, and one Breakout port which has Component/S-Video/Composite.

Also, as I don't like using my monitor as my main source of viewing my PS3, I also grabbed one of these: http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=101&cp_id=10113&cs_id=1011306&p_id=8204&seq=1&format=2 Which allows me to go out both to the card and to my TV proper.

As a side note, the card only supports up to 1080i, not 1080p, but I highly doubt anyone has the bandwith to stream out in 1080p anyway. The max I've tested it with was recording in 720p, but I usually stream out in 640x360, as that's about the max my bandwith will allow, and that fills the twitch.tv window.

Here's some test content, from the last time I played Darksiders 2, if you're wanting an example: http://www.twitch.tv/eujin/b/329707087

Edit: The El-gato does seem to be one of the better deals if you're looking for an external for just recording, though. Also, I did test the trial of x-split when it was in beta, and the AverTV I use worked fine.

You can also use an x-split alternative, seen here: http://www.ffsplit.com/ It's open source and free, so you might see if it works with the el-gato.

Double Edit: @DoctorWelch: If you're looking to capture older game console stuff, I have streamed Gamecube and 3DO stuff through the AverTV card I list above.

I got the HD PVR 2 today and nfi if I can provide it a suitable thread, I'm not that hardcore.

1) Very cheap, maybe I just got lucky and the Swedish currency is über-strong.

2) Ordered it straight from Hauppauge's own store, most people will have to wait until October by the looks of it

3) The reason I got it was the zero-latency HDMI passthrough, it takes a tiny degradation to the visual quality but it's freaking zero-latency. It means us people living in countries with tv-licenses can properly say "fuck that shit" and get a HDMI monitor and be set, legally as well. Tried 720p, 480p, 576i, all seem fine and scaling properly!

4) Because Hauppauge like to have their cards handle things it's tricky to cut down the viewing-applet latency, for me it's 4-5 seconds long so I'd need to delay my incoming audio and webcam for streaming just as much or just let viewers live with it. No biggie because of #3 though.

Recommended, espec if your PC is out of room for an internal card - and if you cannot be arsed to faff about trying to get an internal card to work and perform right, I know I'm no longer that kind of man. Just keep that latency thing in mind if you're a streaming person.

Looking at the product design it isn't a bad little device at all for the 150 us bucks range. But yeah, definitely not designed with live audio capture in mind, though like I said in some other giant bomb post there are ways to .... "fake it". You vid quality at 720p isn't shabby at all. I am curious if that was just "a book that belongs to my dad" or a "book my dad wrote" though.

Edit: oh and as far as monetizing goes.... why bother? Unless you are getting huge numbers of hits you aren't going to make very much with it anyway, and no one likes advertisements.

It's how capturing high quality video works. It's intensive and nothing really does it without lag on the consumer level.

I record high quality footage all the time, on the same PC as I am playing on. I don't get inconsistent lag spikes, ever. That's what I was commenting on.
