So I joined a Gym...No really.

Dear Duders.

Sweep posted a Tweet the other day saying he had joined a Gym, because of that I was up till 1AM laying in bed thinking about joining a gym. I though to myself, I live so close (10 mins away) and I usually have about £800 spending money as I only pay £90 a month rent and thats it. So I went there today for a look around, only to walk out with unlimited access to all the classes and the equipment + Free Swimming and other classes in a different gym in a nearby town. I'm not sure if I was taken for a ride, but i feel very good about myself. I've had GYM equipment before, but there is hardly any motivation at home, if I work out in front of others then I will feel more inclined to keep going.

So I ended up paying £20 for this month because of a deal, and the rest of the months are £32. Its not a contract so I'm not forced into a year, I can back out 30 days in advance. I'm going there tonight for a fitness test, to see where I'm at, I'm guessing it's not going to be too great. Although I'm not fat at all I'm what people call Skinny fat. I have the outside of a average duder but inside I'm guessing I'm obese. I do literally no excerise other than walking to work and I eat crap most days. Hopefully this will encourage me to eat better to so eventually I'll be a healthier guy. Tomorrow night I'm got a Boxercise class and the next night I have a spinning class, whatever the hell that is I have no idea!

What do I want out of it? I'm not really looking to loose a lot of weight, maybe loose a bit of my gut but all I really care about is being a healthier individual. So yes, thank you oh glorious Hamburger.

Are you just hoping to watch Sweep exercise? Because if that's all you want, I bet there are cheaper ways of going about it...

I'm the opposite in terms of working out. I don't want a single human being to be around within perhaps a mile radius, if I am to do so. Especially in that just starting up phase where I'm terrible at everything and just figuring out how much capability I've lost since the last time I did anything.

Spinning is just riding a stationary bike, I believe.

Ugh, £800 of walking around money a month.

I just wanna see the world burn.

Try just walking and jogging more, eating less/better, then do things like cycling and running and weightlifting/weight assisted exercises.

I am also hijacking this post to to let you all know that I'm going to post something really stupid in a day or two, which will include words formed into sentences on this very matter. SNEEK PEEK.

I've never really seen the point of going to a gym unless you want to go all-in with with the weights to get seriously ripped or be a weightlifter. If you just want to get in good shape you can totally do that at home (pushups, crunches, squats etc. require no equipment, and you can go running in the woods, where it's free and lets you enjoy fresh air and nature), and if you need people watching you in order to get motivated, I have to imagine it's better to spend that money on something that gives you practical skills, like swimming or martial arts or something.

Not saying gym is bad though, it's one hell of a lot better than doing nothing.

@Petiew: Oh you mean that thing that I used once or twice and is not sat in my garage? Thats what I mean about no motivation at home, if I'm by myself at home nobody is around to push me on and there are no people around that make me want to keep going. At home there are far to many distractions, there was also hardly any room for it and it was really noisy.

I get free swimming and free martial arts in the package too, one thing I didn't mention was that I'm looking to socialise. I don't really have any friends (Sad face) besides work and my internet chums, I was told joining a gym is a nice place to make friends.

As I mentioned, I have a Boxercise class for tomorrow, I'm pretty sure its similar to boxing. I'm guessing its a room full of people doing punches in the air.

My parents are very soft, for a while they refused my money saying they don't need it. My dad has an incredibly high paying job and my mom has 3 jobs, so they didn't need it. But I wanted to give them something so I started off giving £50 a month since I was 16.

Yea, I know what boxing classes are, I'm mentioning that if you can swing a one on one session with a trainer a week (IE: a boxing training session) it's much better than the classes, because it's one on one it has a lot more impact, they'll push you harder than a class will, plus, it's worth the money you spend on it because it'l whip you up into shape. also, try to rope in some of your mates if they're keen, going with another person is better than going alone, but make sure that person is into it otherwise it'l be a downer

unless you like the classes, in which case go for gold...

I don't wish to sound like a rich kid, but I would one day like to be in a harder situation, it may sound nice having lots of money but I miss the days of being in a game shop and having to decide on about a game a month. Where as now I just buy anything I want and it gets kind of boring. Reading that back it seems insane, huh.

To be honest I think the only ones worth doing are spinning and boxercise. But you mentioned you wanted to do it socially, so maybe most are worth going to. A majority of them just have stupid catchy names and workouts for 40 year old women who want young cock.

By the way, what do you actually want out of the gym. Just to feel healthy, better cardio or better strength?

@haffy: Those women are going to be disappointed, what with me being not there type.

I want a mixture of being healthier, socialising more and really just getting out the house. I spend far to much time to get out of the house, with free swimming whenever I want now and the gym and all these classes hopefully that will get me more out there.

If you want to be healthier a good goal is to put on a little muscle mass in addition to losing fat. That's because muscles take a lot of energy to maintain: for example, if two men weighting 80kg each, but with one of them being muscular, eat a lot of calories, the fit guy won't gain that much fat. That's because his body requires more calories just to maintain his muscles.

If you want to put on some muscle mass, don't bother with the machines, they are isolation exercises and only train a specific muscle group. Start with compound movements first: bench press, pull ups, push ups, squats. Swimming is also excellent, it serves both as cardio and a muscle building activity. If you haven't trained before you'll experience what's called the newbie effect, which means you'll get a bigger than average amount of muscle just from being active in the first 6-12 months; after that the muscle gains are harder.

If you want to lose belly fat, don't bother with abs exercises. You'll have a six pack but it will be under a layer of fat: crunches don't burn that many calories. Start with cardio first.

As far as diet goes, eat more protein: eggs, milk, almonds, chicken and beef. They will help you build muscle and require more energy to break down, meaning you will burn more calories. As far as carbs go eat beans, oats and whole grains, they release energy evenly throughout a few hours. For your fat sources eat avocados and nuts. You might also want to avoid drinking your calories: as far as beverages go stick to pure water, milk, tea and coffee. A can of coke has as many calories as a healthy burger but will not satisfy your hunger.

Good luck!

Joining a gym is a good thing I guess? Provided you actually make the effort to go down to it frequently and actually get something out of it. Don't be that guy that goes to the gym once and spams junk food afterwards because he thinks working out once gives him a free pass. For me there's a public sports complex with a gym, swimming pool and track etc near my house but I usually just go running because I prefer long distance training.

@Hizang: You don't sound like a rich kid, 900 Euros is not in a shape or form "living the life," but you are definitely comfortable. I wasn't trying to sound like a martyr, I love my life, but I cannot wait to get my engineering degree and really start my life's career as my wife has. I'm willingly un-employed (should've said that before) - as paying for day-care is around $750 a month, and I feel having a menial job just to make clear sounds a bit silly to me. I am able to focus strictly on colleges (and games :D) because my Wife works really hard.

I got off on a tangent there, but I wanted to respond to you and say enjoy it while you can. I was in the same position as you at one point, but now I'm not. I wish I could go back to that amount of money, and I even had the same thoughts as you about "wanting it hard." (Lol that sounded perverted, oh well) My advice to you is that if you have that much spending money, increase your savings deposit. You will absolutely need it in the future and will be so glad that you put it aside. I saved around $40,000 in my teens (put all my working money in the bank since my parents took care of all my needs) and already at age 23, it's already been half used up. Keep your chin up and understand that there is absolutely nothing wrong with living comfortable and that the people with the idea of living hard to be "mature" is just jealousy.

Anyone else baffled by this statement?

It's someone who obviously had it hard and feels the need to vent his frustration in that manner. It may be my up-brining, but parents are supposed to cater to their children for as long as they can. Both my Mother and Father felt the need to spoil me rotten my entire life and I think that jealousy comes out in all shapes and sizes. I remember working at Wal-Mart during my teen years and for the first year was a social pariah due to the fact that I wore nice clothes, never worried about money, and that my parents treated me with kindness.

The world is a bleak place when you really look at it. There is a reason people don't smile every time they pass you, like I do. I grew up with a good life and I feel the need to reciprocate it back. I think the same goes for people that didn't have the same childhood or even early-adulthood that I have had.

I'm not gonna lie, all of these sound like classes for middle-aged women where you dance around to old pop music.

It's cool that you get swimming and martial arts though (provided there are real martial arts sessions and not just "boxercise"... unless the name is completely misleading and that's actually a serious martial arts class).

Any of those strike anybody here?

I'm not gonna lie, all of these sound like classes for middle-aged women where you dance around to old pop music. It's cool that you get swimming and martial arts though (provided there are real martial arts sessions and not just "boxercise"... unless the name is completely misleading and that's actually a serious martial arts class).

To be quite honest I'd feel much more comfortable surrounded my middle age women then people who look like action man, less intimidating.

So I just weighed myself for the first time in like forever, I needed too for my information sheet. I'm 10'12 and my height is 5'10, I hope thats good cause again I have no idea.

I love going to the gym everyday. Its not far from my apartment its within walking distance. On certain days I lift weights, and most days I do cardio. I always bring a towel, water bottle, and my psp to listen to music. Listening to music while doing cardio exercises for a hour makes time goes by for me.

From a guy who's lost weight, I just want to throw out some suggestions:

-Swimming is a fantastic workout. I went from doing ~20 laps every time I got in the pool to doing about 100 over the course of a few months. Sure, it may seem awkward doing so little at first, but you keep pushing yourself more & more and eventually you'll be able to swim however much you want.

-Don't forget to diet; Just because you're working out doesn't mean you can eat whatever shit you want (assuming you want to lose weight)

-If it's available in your gym, hit the sauna after a workout. Not only is it relaxing, but it's a good way to burn extra calories at the end of the day. Either dedicate yourself to 5-10 minutes, or try and stay in there as long as you feel comfortable.

Good luck duder! You can do it.

Good for you.

I've tried the gym, it just isn't for me. The only time I've ever been able to stick with working out is when I jog outside. The only strength training I've ever been able to stick with is like push ups at home.

I suppose I'm just not destined to be sexy. OH WELL.

£90 sounds like a lot of money. Perhaps you should shop around and see if you can find anything cheaper.

If you like bike riding, spinning is great. Probably the only class I've ever enjoyed at the gym.

@Shaka999: Swimming is probably my favourite sport, I love the feel of being in the water, I used to go every single Friday but my dad lost interest and stopped going. Now I don't really care about things like "Oh I won't go by myself", I'm quite happy to do things alone now so yes I will be going swimming a lot more now considering its free.

I used to ride all of the time, but as I got older I kinda got more lazy, if I get really into Spinning I may go and grab a bike.

I can't afford a gym membership and I started working out 9 months ago, lost a load a weight just from walking and weightlifting.

If you honestly want to change, you need to step out of your comfort zone. Hit the weights. Start low (no shame) and practice form. After a month you should push yourself harder and harder and rank up the weight.

Don't waste your time with silly cardio classes. The lack of results they yield will just demotivate you.

Cardio has its place for overall health, but you'll burn more than enough calories by lifting hard and often.

But they look more fun, more group focused and it does burn calaroies. Sure I could probably burn more by just sitting there lifting weights, but that seems quite dull and a solitary experience.

Did you not see my post about Water Pokemon on the first page, for shame.
