Geeks & Gamer Girls

Ok, here are a few of my thoughts:

Firstly, I generally don't mind/care about female gamers.  I care about gamers.  If they have boobs, fine, if they have chest hair, fine, if they have a tail, fine.  I ONLY care about gamers, and their ability/enjoyment of games.

Second: This video is a COMPLETE FUCKING ABORTION:

This single video exemplifies entirely what is wrong with the female gamer/geek culture.  Let me count the ways....

1.  There's NO way that fucking video gets made if Clare Grant (chick dressed as Lara Croft) wasn't married to Seth Green.  No fucking way on Earth.  If you'll notice, she's the one featured the most prominently....wonder why....

2.  Why is Starbuck in front of a bunch of Stormtroopers?

3.  Cute how Robot Chicken and "Hatchet" are prominently displayed as the "nerdy" dvd's, isn't it?

4.  Who actually uses "l33t sp34k" (leet speak)  in real life?  If one of my friends said that, I'd beat the shit out of him.

5.  What exactly is it with the fat guy dressed as the Flash?

6.  The entire goddamn point of the video is (theoretically) supposed to say "Take me seriously as a gamer.  Yes, I might be female, and attractive (based on your own tastes), but that doesn't exclude me from knowing about things we both enjoy."  Instead, they portray themselves as essentially blow-up dolls, only existing to cater to men's sexual whims.  I'll point to them dressing in badly-made cosplay costumes, and them being naked with "nerdy" stuff covering their sexual organs.  Hey, you having an S-Rank in The Darkness, or Team Fortress 2 is nerdy.  Having CGI lightsabers covering your boobs?  NOT nerdy.

7.  Playing Halo doesn't make you geeky, a gamer, l33t, or anything else.  I will repeat this a billion times if needed, but once should be enough.  Halo is a fine FPS, but it is NOT the end-all be-all for fucking shooters.

8.  Am I the only one seriously creeped out by Clare Grant's green eyeliner? It looks clownish.

9.  I will repeat point 7 only with "WoW" in the title.  If your only experience in gaming is playing WoW, it's time for Timmy to take you to the shed to put a bullet in your skull.  It's just the humane thing to do.  I will digress on this later, if my blood pressure can take it, but there is a fundamental problem in MMO's.  Mainly, that you can *never* win.  You can/will NEVER beat WoW, Everquest, Aion, or any of the others.  It is literally impossible to.  The only way you can truly beat an MMO, is to turn the fucker off, so you can regain a modicum of your life/sanity back.

10.  I would, love, *LOVE* to put any of those 4 women through Giant Bomb's trivia system.  I'm currently ranked something like 40, having answered around 6,500 questions, and having an average of around 60% or so.  I would love to see how well they do on it.

11.  Here's the most ironic thing to me, there's a "director's cut" of the video.  It runs a minute and a half longer and has a whole intro for Seth Green's character.  Here:

Two things about this version:  1.  It adds a pretty funny popcorn gag in it.  And 2. The first woman shown with Seth, Mikaela Hoover, is LIGHT-YEARS more attractive than the 4 women in the video, combined.  So, apparently, she had to go, because upstaging them with her beauty, and class, is a no-no.

-----------------------

Ok, video-rant  over.  Back to original point, there are tons of geeky/gamer girls out there, whether or not you like them.  Leigh Alexander, Babs on Comic Vine, Amanda on Blistered Thumbs (on Twitter she's VelvetVelour), Candace at PDP, among many others.  These four I mentioned (and others) are all attractive in their own ways, either physically, or mentally, but they do not overtly advertise it, or preach it.  I think a lot of guys would agree that Babs is an attractive woman, physically.  While that is true, it is her actually KNOWING shit, and having the capacity to detail her thoughts into rational, respectable viewpoints, is what makes her special.

Bottom line:  Be a gamer, or a geek, period.  Don't draw attention to yourself, and draw distinctions on what makes you different.  Instead, try and focus on what makes you the same as everyone else.  Also, don't be an asshole who is only trying to suck-up to males.

...I'm looking at you Olivia Munn for that last one...

The worst thing about that video is the singing. As to your rant, I'll just post a pic I photoshopped for another thread.

Yep.

I get that this video is supposed to funny, and maybe there's a little credit to be given for the "yeah, girl power! we can play games too!" aspect of it.... except for the fact that the entire idea of this was to generate cash / further the careers of the people involved.  I don't really see anything about this to show any real love of video games, just the listing off bullet point terminology to hit the target audience.

Why would Stan Lee agree to be in this?

There must be something wrong with me. I thought the song was kind of catchy. As for Olivia Munn, I watched Attack of the Show for a while and that girl would do anything for a laugh. I always appreciated that and the fact she seemed to not give a shit. Cool chick.

I don't want to make any sweeping generalisations here, I'm just going to speak from my experience. I know there are plenty of gamer girls who aren't like this.

I've met a lot of girls who seem to suffer from the same problems that really attractive girls suffer from (not that there isn't a cross-section of really attractive gamer girls, that's beside the point.). A lot of really attractive girls get a lot of attention from an early age (not too early, sheesh). Guys lust after them, things get given to them, and they can become arrogant fairly easily. I find this to be true for gamer/nerdy girls as well. Nerdy guys are often attracted to nerdy girls. Why not? Common interests are good. The problem is that there have always been a lot more nerdy guys than nerdy girls, so the girls will get a lot of attention from a lot of guys, and can develop some pretty unattractive personality traits.

But yeah, that's just from my own personal experience. I'd love to meet a gamer/nerdy girl who isn't attention seeking and arrogant :D

If they want to call themselves gamers and geeks, let them. Doesn't bother me. Its not like there's a test to define whether someone is nerdy or not. Just as you define having an S rank in The Darkness as nerdy, I'm sure others will define nerdy as even including a lightsaber in the video.

I think you're overreacting a bit. This shit happens in every industry. You're just taking it personally now because it's starting to seep into "gaming". Do you think all cheerleaders or female sports reporters are huge sports fans? Do you think every newscaster (male or female) is intelligent and informed? Or do a lot of them get hired because they are attractive and have nice speaking voices?

You should be complaining about the way gamers are marketed to. Why is gaming marketed to "extreme" dudebros and horny perverts? Because most gamers are extreme dudebros and horny perverts, at least in America. That's where the money is. That's why GTA, Madden, and Call of Duty outsell Persona, No More Heroes, and Bayonetta. If you don't learn to get over it, then you're going to have a frustrating road ahead of you, because it's not going to change. Sports are promoted to blue-collar, fat, beer-swilling idiots, but sports fans that don't fit into that mold don't get offended and huffy when they see the most recent Bud Light commercial.

It doesn't matter whether or not they're gamers. They are pursuing a gaming audience and apparently someone thought they were doing it well enough to pay for the video to be shot. It's done pretty successfully online, too, I've heard. If you would like to film your own "hardcore" version of this song, feel free, but even if you had the same budget it probably wouldn't be as successful. Starbuck from Battlestar Galactica was in that video, right? Do you think she really gave a shit about Battlestar Galactica before she was cast? Do you think she sits at home on a Friday night watching Buffy reruns while she plays Pokemon on her NES-style Game Boy Advance SP? If she did, would you like her more, and if she didn't would you dislike her? That's ridiculous. Guess what, most of the celebrities that give autographs and pictures at conventions don't really give a shit about the things being promoted. Sure, some of them probably appreciate their fans and like the attention, and some may genuinely be nerds, but there's probably just as many that are in it for a quick buck.

Are you really so insecure and protective of your pop culture preferences that someone trying to shill to you is that offensive? I'm a video gamer, and I didn't find that video interesting, but I also didn't have enough of a problem with it to start a bitch-thread on a forum. Hating someone for being a non-gamer is just as stupid as hating someone for being a gamer. That's something I find really hypocritical about the downtrodden nerds in society (not all of them, mind you). I was popular in high school, I'm fairly good looking, I never had a problem with women, and I was a starter on my high school football team. In college I joined a fraternity. Just with those facts about me, a number of you probably have a bad impression of me. If you were picked on in high school by a guy that fit that criteria, you're probably going to judge me unfairly based off of your experiences. I had this issue in the thread about the chubby kid that pile-drove his bully into the ground. When I admitted that I was never picked on in high school, the assumption was that I was a bully. It didn't matter that I was in the top of my class grade-wise, that I was in the school plays and musicals, or that I have thousands of posts on a video game message board. None of that mattered, because I fit some people's narrow definition of a jerk based arbitrarily off of my social standing and athletic ability. They don't seem to realize that that's the exact same sentiment and attitude that they hated about their bullies. Their bullies judged them unfairly, labeled them, disregarded them, categorized them, dehumanized them. I'm getting off on a major digression here, though.

My point is, if "attractive" or "cool" people are going to try to get in on nerd culture or promote nerd culture, whether or not it's "hardcore" enough for you, it's only a good thing. It will likely bring more exposure and more profitability to shows like Firefly or games like Okami in the future. Shows like The Big Bang Theory or Robot Chicken may hold no interest to you or I, but it is helping to cultivate interest in nerdier fare in the mainstream. My mom knows Star Trek references because of those shows. A lot of people went to see JJ Abrams take on that franchise. Nerdy things are becoming more culturally acceptable. You're just butthurt because it's no longer your "exclusive little club". These girls aren't even in a position where they are pretending to be knowledgeable about the things they're singing about, like Olivia Munn. They aren't reviewing games or interviewing developers. They are actresses in a music video. Their knowledge of the source material, or how deep their interest actually goes, is irrelevant. Attractive people (particularly women) get put on TV and in videos. That's more important than "authenticity" in their characters for a comedic parody song. Sex sells. An average looking girl with a 100k Gamerscore doesn't. Deal with it.

@HumanityPlague: Dude. It's a parody of a Katy Perry song. Calm down.

@Wrighteous86: See, read his first post. Dude knows what he's saying. I'd rather see more parody music videos like this over seeing a train-wreck like Olivia Munn be repeated constantly.
I also prefer these joke videos over those girls you run into who pretend to like games to impress a guy they like. Or pretending to like the bands he's into, or learning to skateboard to have something in common or some other bullshit like that, vice versa. This joke/parody is just harmless and shameless fun with a bit of self promotion, whatever. At least they aren't appearing everywhere they don't need to be and shoving their SUPER COOL LEET SKILLS AND SEX APPEAL in your face.

Sorry, i'm Swedish. Most of us don't have chest hair let alone being hairy.    It never mattered to me the gender of the "gamer". Know plenty from Steam, Xbox Live, MMO's  and i treat them exactly how i treat the guy "gamers".......Like shit! They do tend to be less obnoxious than guys though.

That's just marketing. People trying to make money. That's not what most female gamers are like. Sure, some girls see the marketing as what they should act like, because they're tools, but most girls just do their own thing.

The song itself is a parody, but yes, parody or not, it is essentially full of using the idea of "gamer girls" in a provocative manner. The discussion of "gamer girls" seems to have been a bit of a controversial thing on Giant Bomb and perhaps most disappointingly I've even seen threads full of people convinced that female games consumers deserve to be plagued by legions of idiots if they so much as mention their gender.  While I believe the video only further encourages the problem of many male games consumers seeing female games consumers as sex objects, I think you may be reading a little too far into it, I don't think it is trying to make a serious statement and problems to do with female games consumers being accepted as part of the gaming community stretch way beyond this tiny video.

I think where I really disagree with you though is, what if they're way into Halo? What if their only experience of gaming is WoW? What if they did terribly in the Giant Bomb trivia quiz? Does that really matter? One rather disheartening thing I've seen a number of times before is girls identifying themselves as "gamers" only to have forums full of people angrily judging them to see if they're really worth of the prestigious title of "gamer". It doesn't matter and it shouldn't matter, if a woman wants to sit around and play Demons' Souls all day, fine, and if a woman just wants to play Angry Birds for a few minutes during her lunch break, that's fine too. We should respect all games consumers as equals, unless they give us a real reason to do otherwise.

I feel like this is attempting to fit some sort of 'gamer culture' that one can fit into.  But gaming isn't a culture, it's an activity.

This is pretty embarassing. Like-- who is this for? I think the people who this is for hate it.
I liked the director's cut thing better cos him tryina talk to that girl about Start Trek was pretty funny.

Posting this here because... gaming music videos- I dunno;

I don't get what never being able to "win" an MMO has anything to do with this song or "girl gamers". Also, so what if someone doesn't know tons of game trivia, what pedestal are you on to say that you can't be considered a "gamer" just because you don't know the whole back story to every game. The only thing bad about that video is the atrocious singing. Go get a glass of water, calm down.

Pssht, yeah, but you're probably not even a real gamer, so why should I care about your opinion? Quick, tell me 3 different facts about Guild Wars or you're not allowed back on Giant Bomb ever again!

(Whoa, I just looked up the Guild Wars franchise page here on GB. There are soldiers with guns and stuff in 2? Wasn't the first one a traditional fantasy game? Maybe I should leave Giant Bomb...)

Ohhh uhh, well.. It's not strictly an MMO as it's heavily instanced. It's set in a place called Tyria. You can only equip up to 8 skills and the level cap is 20. Is that sufficient information? Yeah there weren't any guns in the first one.. I think you're right, leave now and leave Vinny to me.

Wait, there are ranks in The Darkness? I played that game to death and never saw that!

The Achievement system on Giant Bomb ranks the games you play by how many achievements you've gained. Whenever you receive all achievements for a game, you receive an S-Rank.

I'd love to meet a gamer/nerdy girl who isn't attention seeking and arrogant :D

wouldn't we all like to meet a girl like that. i know i wold love to meet a girl that was a nerd that played other stuff.

that video was only made for the lols for nerds. i don't think the girls even understood what they hell they were singing. what's a MMO, RPG, i don't' understand.
