Audio diaries/logs in games?. . .

I've been watching some old videos and listening to old podcasts on Giantbomb recently, and I often hear implications that Bioshock was the first game to fully incorporate audio diaries or logs in a game. This is just completely untrue, Doom 3 had them and I think used them much better than Bioshock. It just bothered me a little bit that GB staff seem to have completely forgotton about them in Doom 3.

God, I have a powerful lust to play Doom 3 this morning!

Who the hell makes 40 audiologs on different audio recording devices and leaves them strewn about such dangerous places? Nonsense! "
I'm with you, I hate audio logs. It breaks immersion for me. Why can't you just have cut scenes or a character explain things? It just seems like a cheap way to tell a story. It's like if Gordon Freeman had to run around picking up giant tapes and listening to Dr Breen and Alyx leading you around. HL2 definitely wouldn't have been as good as it was.

Why are we bumping this? Also, System Shock. That was 13 years before Bioshock.

From memory Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines had them also, released a couple months after Doom 3.

I just (like, 4 minutes ago) finished Doom 3 for the first time.  They definitely use audio logs to tell a significant chunk of the story, but I think Bioshock does it better (in part because the story's better, but I also liked the autoplay feature).

Really, System Shock 1 and 2 pretty much started the audio log thing, and since that concept was carried over to Bioshock by Irrational Games, the same developer, i'd say that's a fair statement to make.  I don't remember them being in Doom 3, but then again I remember very little about Doom 3 in general.
