Sexist Art

guys i was looking at paintings and came across these shocking works (might be NSFW if your employer objects to nudity in classical art):

"La Nymphée" by some guy called Bouguereau or something, very sexist but what do you expect from a Frenchman

"Green Eyes" by Arantzazu Martinez who i think is a woman, but looking at the painting it's clearly misogynistic (why is the woman doing a sexy pose with her tits out when the guy doesn't have his dick out?) so she probably hates her own gender

"Slave Market in Rome" by Jean-Léon Gérôme, another misogynistic frog-eater just like that Bououguoroeua bloke or whatever he was called. who could possibly enjoy looking at a painting of women being sold as slaves? a sexist, that's who

"Hylas and the Nymphs" by John William Waterhouse, this is clearly the sexual fantasy of a 12-year-old boy which is probably how old Waterhouse was when he painted this juvenile and pathetic work

what a bunch of sexist, misogynistic, juvenile, sexist sexists these artists are. i hope people boycott their paintings or something because this is just disgusting. no one who respects women could possible paint or appreciate something like this. i think the works have even been displayed on museums, can you believe that? hanging there on the wall, oppressing innocent women who only wanted to look at nice paintings, but no, i guess they can't even be allowed to do that without the patriarchy slapping them in the face. we should let the painters know how sexist they are on forums or maybe if a blogger reads this you could make a blog about it so they can read it and realize the error of their woman-hating ways, i think some of them may be dead so I guess we can't reach those but they are sexist anyway

So I know these are paintings but... You're probably going to get banned for this. So.... might wanna delete this before the mods see it.

There's a difference between a hyper-sexualized art, and natural female shapes. Come on man.

However, the males in the game are also hyper-sexualized, so I don't see what's the big deal.

It's dumb, but it's not really biased.

Pornography in the old days sure were classy. ;)

Some lovely art--and a fun idea for a post--but this could still potentially get people fired from their workplace, so I still flagged the thread. You should at LEAST add some spoiler tags, and put "NSFW" in the title.

Posted by TwoLines

@mrfluke: I'm gonna be super pissed if that happens. Goddamn puritan motherfuckers. Blowing heads to pieces? That's okay. A naked body?! Ban! Ban everyone!

@twolines: While I agree with you them is the rules and its not our website and you agree to the house rules when you enter the club house.

I don't see how it's against the rules. It's not pornography and no genitalia are actually painted. Until a mod comments I will assume classical art is allowed.

I'll add "NSFW" to the title, though it would take a stupid employer indeed to be upset because an employee is looking at paintings.

@twolines: thems the rules.

btw i agree with you that the whole outrage over the art in dragons crown is incredibly stupid

I can't watch that movie anymore because that same guy also plays Professor Lupin. Fucks with my head.

Changes in blog titles apparently aren't reflected on the forums so I just added a spoiler tag and a warning in the post itself instead.

People like the OP remind me of like those derpy conspiracy theorists who cling to their version of reality because they're both too stupid to understand the real world and too arrogant to admit it.

This is the most childish thing I have ever seen, dude.

listen, there is no discussing shit with this guy. If you want to discuss this shit with me, fine, but there is no discussion here because I know from experience.

Also this is just a trolling "WELL ANCIENT ROMANS SCULPTED NAKED LADIES SO CHECK MAKE FEMTARDS" or whatever.

This thread is great and it's even greater because most of you think he is being serious.

One is socially acceptable (and social acceptability, of course, is what the forum rules are based on -- hence, for example, why certain words are banned regardless of the context in which they're used). I can admire a classical painting with nudity pretty much wherever I please and no one will mind, but browsing a porn site, even if it was just erotic non-nude pictures, would be frowned upon most everywhere public.

What that guy said

Anyone who thinks feminist game writers criticisms are summed up by "female nudity=sexism" is completely missing their point. Like, entirely.

Good one. What a deft examination of this issue. Glad people like you have access to internet.

@animasta: Do you think we can turn this thread into something productive with some casual talk?

I am not above making a shitty post in a shitty topic!

I want to get more into this mystery of the actor of professor Quirrell personally... you know, something important.

The problem is subjectivity. I don't want you to get banned for this or anything, but workplaces--at least in the US--do not make a distinction between art and pornography. It's really hard to argue the point where one ends and another begins, so the safest thing to do is ban it all from the workplace, which is what most workplaces do.

@video_game_king: Lots of reasons, but the gist of it: classical art is of great cultural and historical importance and governments sponsor its preservation, restoration and public display in museums where schoolchildren go on field trips.

What that guy said

Depends on what kind of feminist they are. For example Anita Sarkeesian is a sex negative feminist and she would exactly think that.

Posted by Animasta

@joshwent: they do look really similar though!

(also I love that apparently it's the fact that they're naked is the only problem or is even a problem)

Edited by Digiwth

@darji: I don't think that's very true.

I have no idea what's up with Anita Sarkeesian (I've never watched any of her videos), but sometimes feminists can be silly, too. And, if that is in fact what she thinks she's not very good at feminism. Nudity=/=sex or sexualization. Nudity can serve a purpose. It's the absence of any purpose other than "check out this girl's tits" that can be offensive to sex negative feminists or whatev which I think is completely valid.

It sounds weird, but I like that we can have these kind of conversations about vidya games now. It's like video games are growing up.
